About This Guide
This section describes the objectives, audience, organization, and conventions of the Internetwork Performance Monitor Installation Guide. It refers you to related publications and describes online sources of technical information.
Cisco documentation and additional literature are available in a CD-ROM package that ships with your product. The Documentation CD-ROM, a member of the Cisco Connection Family, is updated monthly. This guide describes the architecture and supported platforms for the Internetwork Performance Monitor (IPM) product. From the information provided in this guide, you should be able to execute the tasks that are necessary to install and verify IPM in your system environment.
This guide is for the network administrator or operator who installs and verifies the IPM software. The network administrator or operator should be familiar with the following topics:
- Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)
- Basic UNIX commands
- UNIX text editors
This guide is divided into the following chapters:
- "What is New in This Release" provides a brief description of the new features in IPM software release 2.0 and describes IPM's new client/server architecture.
- "Preparing to Install IPM" provides information to help you plan your installation of IPM including a description of the available installation methods, the supported platforms, and the hardware and software requirements.
- "Quick Start" provides the basic information for you to install and run IPM.
- "Upgrading From IPM Software Release 1.0" describes the tasks to convert your existing IPM software release 1.0 configurations and data for use in IPM software release 2.0.
- "Installing IPM on Solaris" provides an in-depth look at installing IPM on the Solaris platform and includes comprehensive information about installing, verifying, uninstalling and reinstalling IPM on Sun Solaris.
- "Installing the IPM Client on Windows NT" describes how to install, verify, and uninstall the IPM client software on a Windows NT workstation.
- "Installing the IPM Client Software Using the Web Server" describes the requirements for using the Web server as an alternative to using the CD-ROM to install the IPM client software. This chapter provides an overview of accessing the Web server for all platforms to download the client installation software. Detailed information about installing the IPM client software for the different platforms is provided in the corresponding installation chapter for each platform.
- "Installing NSPECHO to Measure SNA Response Times" provides instructions on how to install the NSPECHO mainframe program to measure host-to-router performance. This chapter also includes information on configuring VTAM and the mainframe-to-router link.
- "Sample Installation Output" provides examples of the output listings produced when running various installation scenarios on the IPM Solaris platform.
- "Configuring Service Point on the Host and Routers" provides figures and detailed descriptions of how service point support is configured on the mainframe and router.
This guide uses basic conventions to represent text and table information.
Command descriptions use the following conventions:
- Commands and keywords are in boldface font.
- Arguments for which you supply values are in italic font.
- Elements in square brackets ([ ]) are optional.
- Alternate but required keywords are grouped in braces ({ }) and separated by a vertical bar (|).
Examples use the following conventions:
- Terminal sessions and information that the system displays are printed in
screen font.
- Information that you enter is in boldface screen font. Variables for which you enter actual data are printed in italic screen font.
- Nonprinting characters, such as passwords, are shown in angle brackets (< >).
- Information that the system displays is in
screen font, with default responses in square brackets ([ ]).
This publication also uses the following conventions:
- Menu items and button names are in boldface font.
- Directories and filenames are in italic font.
- If items such as buttons or menu options are grayed out on application windows, it means that the items are not available either because you do not have the correct permissions or because the item is not applicable at this time.

IPM includes a browser-based online Help system that allows you to access different types of background information about using IPM. The online Help system provides overviews, related information, procedures, and glossary terms for IPM. You can select underlined text to access additional Help windows that provide related information.
Cisco Connection Online (CCO) is Cisco Systems' primary, real-time support channel. Maintenance customers and partners can self-register on CCO to obtain additional content and services.
Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, CCO provides a wealth of standard and value-added services to Cisco's customers and business partners. CCO services include product information, software updates, release notes, technical tips, the Bug Navigator, configuration notes, brochures, descriptions of service offerings, and download access to public and authorized files.
CCO serves a wide variety of users through two interfaces that are updated and enhanced simultaneously---a character-based version and a multimedia version that resides on the WWW. The character-based CCO supports Zmodem, Kermit, Xmodem, FTP, Internet e-mail, and fax download options, and is excellent for quick access to information over lower bandwidths. The WWW version of CCO provides richly formatted documents with photographs, figures, graphics, and video, as well as hyperlinks to related information.
