View Builder

View Builder

The View Builder is a generic window used throughout Cisco Info Center for creating, editing, and managing views. Views are used to display the fields of the alerts you want to see.

This chapter contains the following sections:

Introduction to the View Builder

When viewing the Event List information from an Cisco Info Server, you can define the fields, titles of the fields, formatting of fields, and the sorting of the information. The arrangement of this information is called a view, and the View Builder window allows you to construct these views.

You can save a constructed view as a .elv file or you can drag and drop it into the Event List configuration when you select Edit Views. Where the View Builder is built into a tool, an Apply button is available to update the named view within the tool without saving it.

In the Conductor View Builder, there is no Apply button; either views must be saved or you can drag and drop them into another tool.

Starting the View Builder

You can start the View Builder, shown in Figure 4-1, in several ways:

To create a view, you should specify a name for the view in the Name field. This name is used in the Event List.

Changing the Appearance of the View

To change the appearance of the view, use the Display Columns panel and the Sort Columns panel.

Changing the Display Columns

You can use the Display Columns panel to configure the visual appearance of views. Figure 4-2 shows the Display Columns panel.

Adding a Column

To add a column:

    1. Select a field from the field list.

    2. Click on the Add button. The field is added to the view as the right most column. Use the horizontal scroll bar to view the new column.

You can also add a column with drag and drop:

    1. Select a field from the field list.

    2. Press the middle mouse button.

    3. Drag the pointer over the column.

    4. Release the mouse button. The field is added to the view as the right most column.

Removing a Column

To remove a column:

    1. Select the column to remove by clicking on a column.

    2. Click on the Remove button. The column is removed from the Tool View and appears back in the field list.

You can also remove the field with drag and drop:

    1. Select the column to remove by clicking on a column.

    2. Press the middle mouse button.

    3. Drag the pointer over the field list.

    4. Release the mouse button. The column is removed and placed back into the field list.

Changing the Order of Columns

To change the order of the columns, click on a column to select it. You can now change its position using the First, Left, Right, or Last buttons.

Changing the Appearance of a Column

Select the column to change by clicking on a column. The Column Details panel displays the column formatting details. Any changes made in this panel immediately change the appearance of the selected column.

The Column text field shows which field is being edited; you cannot edit this field.

Click on the Justify option button to the right of the text field to select the alignment of the data in that column. You can select either Left, Center, or Right to give left, centered, or right alignment.

You can change the title of the column by editing the Title text field. Click on the Justify option button to the right of the text field to select the alignment of the title. You can select either Left, Center, or Right to provide left, centered, or right alignment.

To change the width of the column, drag the bar on the Width slider.

Fixed Columns

A view may have a number of columns fixed on the left hand side. This allows those columns to always be displayed while you scroll the other fields. To set the number of fixed columns, use the Fixed Columns slider. This slider allows you to fix up to one less than the number of columns in the view.

The Sort Columns Panel

You can use the Sort Columns panel to configure the ordering of rows for a view. For example, Figure 4-3 shows the rows sorted by the Serial field.

Adding a Field to Sort

Select the field to be sorted in the Sort Columns list, then click on the Add button. You can also add a field with drag and drop:

Select the field to sort in the Sort Columns list.

    1. Press the middle mouse button over the field.

    2. Drag the pointer over the list of sorting fields.

    3. Release the mouse button. The field is added to the bottom of the list of sorting fields and is removed from the Sort Columns list.

Removing a Field from the List of Sorting Fields

To remove a field from the list of sorting fields:

    1. Select the field to remove.

    2. Click on the Remove button.

Alternatively, you can use drag and drop to remove a field:

    1. Select the field to remove.

    2. Press the middle mouse button.

    3. Drag the pointer to the column field list.

    4. Release the mouse button. The field is removed from the list of sorting fields and returned to the Sort Columns list.

Changing the Direction of the Sort

In the Sort Columns list, an arrow is placed next to each entry. By default, this arrow points upwards, so the field is sorted in ascending, alphabetical order.

To change the order to descending alphabetic order, double-click on the arrow.

Changing the Precedence of Sorting

The field at the top of the list of sorting fields has the highest precedence when sorting. When you add a second field to the list, and the first field is identical for a number of entries, the second field is used to sort within those entries.

To raise or lower the precedence of a field, select the field in the list of sorting fields, then use the Top, Up, Down and Bottom buttons.

These buttons are not available when the operation is inappropriate. For example, when you select the top entry in the list, the Top and Up buttons are unavailable, as the entry is already at the top and cannot be moved up.

Popup Menus in the List of Sorting Fields

Alternatively, you can change the sort order, change the precedence of a field, and remove a field with a popup menu. To display the popup menu, click on the right mouse button over an entry in the list of sorting fields.

Saving Views

To save a view, select the File menu's Save option. When you do not specify a file name, a file selection window is displayed.

To save a view with a new name, select the File menu's Save As option. Views should be saved with a .elv file name extension.

Loading Views

To load a view, select the File menu's Open option. A file selection window is displayed. View files have a .elv file name extension.

Dragging and Dropping Views

You can use drag and drop to transfer views to applications. To drag and drop a view:

    1. Move the mouse pointer over the drag point icon.

    2. Press the middle mouse button.

    3. Drag the mouse over an application. When the cursor is over a valid drop area, it changes color to green.

    4. Release the mouse button to drop the view into that application.
