The UNIX Alternative Mode
This appendix contains information about the Event List alternative mode available on the UNIX platform.
This appendix contains the following sections:
The alternative mode Event List is designed to support systems where extra journal entries are required.
You can start the alternative mode in two ways:
NCOEvent*alternateMode: True
This section describes the differences between the alternative mode and the Event List.
The Delete option is moved from the Alerts menu to the Edit menu. Only super users can delete alerts. Administrators and normal users cannot delete alerts.
The Clear option on the Alerts menu's Prioritize submenu is not available. The Close option is added to the Alerts menu.
The Acknowledge and Deacknowledge options are removed from the Alerts menu.
A new Forced Journal Entry window for journal entries is added to the system. Its purpose is to ensure that a journal entry is made before any action is taken. Figure B-1 shows the Forced Journal Entry window.
Figure B-1: Forced Journal Entry Window

The Identity option button displays your ID. Specify the text of the journal in the text window.
The Colors window displays assigned alerts and unassigned alerts over the two blocks of colors.
The basis for the alternative mode is to ensure that journal entries are made at all points in the life-cycle of an alert. The Acknowledged field is not used to identify acknowledgment, but instead identifies assignment.
Normal users are defined as view only users. Administrators manage and work on alerts.
When a new alert arrives, an administrator or super user can assign it to an administrator by selecting the Alerts menu's Assign option. A Forced Journal Entry window is displayed. The administrator should make an entry in the text window and set the Identity button to themselves. Upon click on the OK button, the alert appears in the assigned alert color that is appropriate to its severity.
An administrator who assigns an alert can also reprioritize an alert, which will also display the Forced Journal Entry window. The administrator should specify the reason for the reprioritisation and identify themselves with the Identity button.
An administrator can resolve an alert by selecting the Alerts menu's Resolve option. Again, the Forced Journal Entry window is displayed. It is populated with the initial text of the resolution, as defined by the administrator or super user. The administrator should append text as necessary and identify themselves with the Identity button, and then click on the OK button. The alert is set to closed severity (green) and the journal entry recorded.
An alert can be closed by selecting the Alerts menu's Close option. The Forced Journal Entry window is displayed and the administrator should populate it and identify themselves with the Identity button.
Only super users are allowed to delete alerts.
