The Objective View is a tool for displaying maps created by the administrator and animating them with status information from the Cisco Info Center system.
This chapter contains the following sections:
The Objective View displays map books. Map books contain a number of map pages, which in turn, are made up of layers. These layers contain graphical objects called symbols.
Typically, from these symbols, you can display the status of entities, move to another map page, show an Event List, or run a tool.
To run the Objective View, double-click on a map icon in your personal library on the conductor. A map file has a .map file name extension.
The Objective View can also be run from the command line but still requires a map file as a parameter, for example, specify the following command:
host$ $OMNIHOME/bin/nco_ov -map mapfile.map &
Figure 5-1 shows the Objective View window.
The map book name is displayed on the title bar and the main window displays a list of all the map pages available in the current map book file.
To exit from the Objective View, select the File menu's Exit option.
To display a map page, double-click on an entry in the list of map pages. The map page is displayed in another window.
Figure 5-2 shows an example of a map page, which shows all the default layers.
The alert severity is color coded. You can display a window, which can be used as a guide to the color coding. To display the colors, select the Windows menu's Colors option.
Map pages are divided into layers. The default layers are object, annotation, and background:
You can select which layer to display using the Layer menu. For example, to display the object layer, select the Layer menu's Object option.
The toggle button, to the left of the menu option, shows that the layer is displayed.
You can refresh the map display to update the status information. To do this, select the View menu's Refresh option.
You can use the Panner to move the map page to where the map is larger than the window. To display the panner, select the Windows menu's Panner option.
Figure 5-3 shows the Panner Window.
To use the Panner:
1. Press the left mouse button on the square in the Panner.
2. Drag the pointer around the Panner window. The map display shows the parts of the map that were not visible.
Symbols on the map page may display status information, for example, the severity of the highest severity alert. This information is derived by using a filter.
Symbols may display the status in one of five ways, as described in Table 5-1.

Fill Background | The background of the symbol is filled with the status color. For lines and links, Fill Background changes the line/link color. For images, the rectangle behind the image is filled with the status color. |
Highlight Bar | A bar is drawn below the symbol, colored with the status color. |
Outline | For most symbols, the line color of the symbol changes to the status color. For text and image symbols, a box is drawn around the symbol in the status color. |
Overlay Bar | Similar to the Highlight Bar, except the bar is drawn over the middle of the symbol. For text symbols, the background color of the text changes to the status color. |
Overlay String | Similar to the Overlay Bar, except the string value of the status (for example, Critical, Warning) is drawn over the middle of the symbol. This option has no effect on text, line, or link symbols. |
Symbols on a map page may have associated actions. To run an action, double-click on a symbol.
When you press the right mouse button over a symbol on the map, a popup menu is displayed. The menu content varies according to the type of symbol; however, the first menu item is a Tools menu.
The second menu item is the action of the symbol. Actions can be:
Select the Show Event List option, or double-click on the symbol, to look up the filter being used to generate the severity indicator and call the Event List with that filter and view.
The displayed Event List is a variation of the standard Event List window, called a Transient Event List window. These windows lack the Filter and View bar and have an extra Keep Window option in the File menu. When you select the File menu's Keep Window option, this adds the filter and view to the Event List.
To enable the Event List to show flashing alerts, set the preferences. See Section, "Objective View Preferences", for more information.
Select the File menu's Close option to close the Transient Event List window.
Select the Show Subview option, or double-click on the symbol, to display another map page window from the current map book.
Select the Execute Command option, or double-click on the symbol, to run a tool. This tool may prompt for parameters in another window.
To set the preferences for the Objective View, select the Window menu's Preferences option.
You can set the Event List to flash, for example, when you want to be warned about a particular alert arriving. Select the Enable Flashing option to use flashing alerts on the Event List.
You can then configure the flashing option:
The popup menu may contain the following additional options:
A symbol may be associated with a Cisco Info Center class value. This value is used to select which menus are available for the symbol.
Select the Information option to display information about the symbol in another window.
When you move the mouse pointer away from an active symbol, and click on the right mouse button, a background popup menu is displayed. The options on this menu are Refresh and Panner.
Select the Refresh option to update the map page alert severity information. This is equivalent to selecting the View menu's Refresh option.
Select Panner to display the windows map panner page. This is equivalent to selecting the Windows menu's Panner option.
An unplaced alert is an alert whose status is not displayed on the map. To show the unplaced alerts, click on the Unplaced Events button on the Objective View window. This displays a virtual map page, which contains the symbols for any nodes that are reporting a status, but do not match the current map.
When you double-click on a symbol, the default action is Show List, which displays an Event List with a default view and a filter that matches the displayed node name. For example, when you double-click on the symbol labelled Link 3, an Event List is displayed with a filter of Node=link3.
This window is dynamic and is not saved between runs of the Objective View.
