This chapter contains information about how to get started with Cisco Info Center.

The Conductor is the primary tool for starting other Cisco Info Center tools in the system. The Conductor allows you to:
To start the Cisco Info Center Conductor, at the UNIX command prompt, specify:
host% nco &
The Login window is displayed. When you cannot start the Conductor, you may not have the correct environment variables set. Contact your system administrator for more details.
At the Login window, specify your username and password. By default, the Username field is populated with your UNIX login name.
All text specified in the Password field is obscured with asterisk (*)characters. The Server option button defaults to NCOMS. You are allowed three attempts to login. On each attempt, the password field is cleared. When you fail to log in correctly within three attempts, the program terminates.
To exit from the Conductor, select the File menu's Exit option. All tools launched with the Conductor remain open.
Figure 1-1 shows the Conductor window.
Use the Button bar to start the Cisco Info Center tools. The button bar consists of two autostart boxes and eight other buttons. The four buttons on the bottom row are only available to administrators and super users, therefore, they are not described in this manual.
The Event List button starts the Event List Conductor program with a default configuration, that is, with a default view and default filter. When an Event List Conductor has been launched from the Conductor, this button is grayed out to stop accidental launching of multiple Event Lists.
The Filter Builder button starts the Filter Builder program with the default filter loaded, which allows you to create new filters or edit existing filters. Note, the default filter contains no conditions.
The View Builder button starts the View Builder program with the default view loaded, which allows you to create new views or edit existing views.
The Browser button opens a file Browser window, which allows you to navigate file systems, find files and add them to your Personal Library. See Section, "The Browser", for more details.
The Autostart boxes allow you to start an Event List Conductor configuration and Objective View map automatically. The upper Autostart box is for Event List configuration icons; the lower Autostart box is for the Objective View map icons.
To configure the Autostart boxes, drag and drop an icon from the Personal Library or Browser window, into the boxes.
The Personal Library contains icons representing the files available for use with Cisco Info Center. This library always contains a Preferences icon. Double-click on an icon to start that application.
You can drag and drop files into the Personal Library from the Browser window. See Section, "The Browser", for more information.
To refresh the contents of the Personal Library, select the View menu's Refresh option. To show hidden files (files with names beginning with a period) and backup files (files with names ending in .bak), select the View menu's Show Hidden Files and Show Backup Files options.
Double-click on the prefs (Preferences) icon, or click on the right mouse button on the icon and then select the Edit option, to display the Global Preferences window. This icon represents the repository of your personal preferences. When other tools change preferences, they are changed in this file.
Double-click on an Event List Configuration icon (.elc files), or click on the right mouse button on the icon and select the Start Event List option from the popup menu, to start an Event List tool with that configuration loaded. To delete an Event List configuration from the Personal Library, click on the right mouse button and select the Delete option.
Double-click on an Objective View map icon (map files), or click on the right mouse button on the icon and select the Start Objective View option, to start the Objective View tool with the map loaded. To delete an Objective View map from the Personal Library, click on the right mouse button and select the Delete option. The other popup menu option, Start Map Editor (which starts the Map Builder), is only available to administrators and super users.
Double-click on a Filter icon (.elf files), or click on the right mouse button on the icon and select the Start Filter Builder option, to start the Filter Builder with the filter loaded. To delete a filter from the Personal Library, click on the right mouse button and select the Delete option.
Double-click on a View icon (.elv files), or click on the right mouse button on the icon and select the Start View Builder option, to start the View Builder with the view loaded. To delete a View from the Personal Library, click on the right mouse button and select the Delete option.
The Event List configuration, Objective View map, filter, and view icons may also appear covered by a chain link. This indicates the file is not in the Personal Library, and only a reference to the file exists. These icons are created by linking the actual file into the Personal Library from the Browser. All the functions listed above apply to these linked icons. When a linked icon is deleted from the Personal Library, only the reference to the file is removed. The actual file is left untouched.
Figure 1-2 shows linked Event List, Filter, View, and Map files.
The Browser window displays the contents of a directory. To display the Directory Browser window, click on the Browser button.
The Browser allows you to view files in your local system. From the Browser, you can drag and drop files into your Personal Library. Figure 1-3 shows the Directory Browser window.
All icons that appear in the Personal Library can appear in the Directory Browser window. The full path name of the current directory is displayed in the Directory field. To move straight to a directory, specify the path and name in the text field, then press Return.
To move to a directory, double-click on a directory icon.
A parent directory is labelled with two periods. To return to the previous directory, double-click on the parent directory icon.
You can drag and drop all icons from the Directory Browser window into the Personal Library, apart from the directory icon. In the same way, you can drag and drop all icons in the Personal Library into the Directory Browser window, apart from the Preferences icons.
To display the Global Preferences window, double-click on the prefs icon in the Personal Library.
The Global Preferences window comprises four tabs, one for each type of preference: Conductor, Event List, Notification, and Objective View. Click on a particular tab to select the preference type.
The following sections describe the preferences available for each of these tabs.
To set the option for the Conductor, click on the Conductor tab. When you select the Timed Directory Update option, the Conductor updates its directory information and displays at regular intervals. The interval is controlled by the value in the text field. This value is in seconds.
To set the options for the Event List, click on the Event List tab. The monitor boxes in the Monitor Box window can be configured to show or not show the statistics lines. Select one of the following:
You can also select the type of graphical distribution indicator. Select either:
Select the Show Colors option to use color to indicate the severity of alerts in Event List windows. You can select this option to change the Event List to monochrome and not show the severity color.
Select the Sort Information Details option to sort the detail fields in the Information window alphabetically by name of field. When it is not selected, the detail fields are displayed in a random order.
You can configure the Event List to update at a selected time rather than awaiting notification of updates from the ObjectServer. Click on the Refresh tab, then select the Timed Refresh option. Specify a time in seconds in the text field.
All of the most recent data from the ObjectServer is updated in the Event List when the Timed Refresh activates.
Do not set the refresh to a low value, for example, less than sixty seconds, as this has an impact on ObjectServer performance. Note that Timed Refresh forces the Event List to reload all its data at the set interval. This may have an impact on network traffic.
Select the Enable Flashing option to use flashing alerts on the Event List. Then you can configure the flashing option:
When you close an Event List to an icon, you can be notified of any alerts that arrive. To receive a notification, click on the Notification tab, then select the Notify when Iconised option. Set the When and How options to define the type of notification.

To activate these options, close any open Event Lists and reopen them.
To set the options for the Objective View, click on the Objective View tab.
Select the Enable Flashing option to use flashing alerts on the Event List. You can then configure the flashing option:
Click on the Apply button within the Conductor to change only the Conductor preferences. To make the changes in the Event List, click on Save then restart the Event List, or use the Event List Preferences window. For information, see Section, "Event List Preferences".
To change your password, select the File menu's Change Password option. Figure 1-4 shows the Change Password window.
To change your password:
1. Specify the current password in the Current field.
2. Specify the new password in the New field.
3. Specify the new password a second time in the Verify field.
4. Click on the OK button to change the password.
When you specify an invalid current password, or when the entries in the New and Verify fields do not match, an error message is displayed. In both cases, you can dismiss the error message window and correct the error.
