This chapter contains the following sections:

Before You Begin Software Installation

CWM Release 9.2 must be installed on a Sun workstation (see Section, "Cisco WAN Manager Hardware Requirements" for details.) The Solaris 2.6 operating system must be installed on the Sun workstation before you install CWM 9.2. Appendix A, "Installing Solaris and Disk Partitioning", provides instructions on installing the Solaris 2.6 operating system. For complete details, refer to the appropriate Sun documentation.

Hewlett Packard's OpenView 5.01 is used to produce CWM 9.2 topologies and for logging traps. When HP OpenView 5.01 is already installed on your workstation, or if you do not want to use HP OpenView 5.01 to produce topologies or log traps, proceed with the installation of CWM 9.2. Otherwise, you must install HP OpenView 5.01 on the Sun workstation before you install CWM 9.2. For instructions on installing HP OpenView, refer to the appropriate HP documentation.


Note You are required to have UNIX system level experience to install CWM 9.2 and its associated software programs.

If you are installing Cisco WAN Manager software on a Sun workstation that has been in use as a network management system, remember to record the following information and possibly store it in a temporary location.

Cisco WAN Manager Hardware Requirements

The minimum recommended hard disk and memory configuration requirements are provided in this section.

Minimum Requirements

For most systems, 8 GB of hard disk is required. Increasing available hard disk space enhances performance.

Workstation Requirements

Three levels of workstations are supported for Cisco WAN Manager 9.2 as standard platforms. They are low-end, mid-range and high-end platforms.The configuration of each platform type is listed in Table 1-1, "Sun Platform Requirements".

The selection of a proper CWM platform depends on a number of factors, such as number of CWM desktops, number of managed connections and number of statistics collected and stored.

Optional Hardware Enhancements

When a single CWM 9.2 NMS (Network Management Station) workstation is connected to a large network, the statistics collection performance of the Statistics Collection Manager can be markedly improved (up to 40% more I/O throughput) by adding a second SCSI-2 interface and a second external hard disk drive. The second external hard drive capacity should be 2-GB or greater.

Required Configuration for Stand-Alone SCM

Three types of machines are supported for CWM 9.2.06 stand-alone SCM as standard platforms. They are low-end, mid-range and high-end platforms. The configuration of each platform type is listed in Table 1-2, "Platform Requirements for Stand-Alone SCM". Other equivalent platforms running Solaris 2.6 are also supported.

The CWM 9.2 NMS workstation requires the following software components:

Note The Data Link package of WingZ must also be installed along with WingZ in the /usr/users/Wingz/DataLink directory.

CWM 9.2 supports the following Cisco software:

Sequence of Software Installation

When installing required software on a Sun workstation, install the different software packages in the following sequence:

    1. Sun Solaris 2.6 operating system

    2. HP OpenView 5.01

    3. Cisco CiscoView 4.2

    4. Wingz 2.55

    5. Cisco WAN Manager

Configuring Your System for Multi Network Support

CWM can manage up to forty, multiple networks. When you plan to manage more than eight networks with CWM, you should configure the CWM workstation's buffer cache to 6MB (6 x 1024). You can do this configuration either before or after installing CWM. You must add the following entry (as user root) to the /etc/system file, and then reboot the workstation for this change to take affect.

Specify the following command (as user root) to check the current size of the buffer cache. The number shown is in bytes. Therefore, divide it by 1024 to convert it to kilobytes, or divide it by 1048576 to convert it to megabytes.

Planning and Configuring the Informix OnLine Database

The CWM installation allows you to configure the CWM Informix OnLine database into one or three partitions. As each partition can be on a separate drive, multi-partition databases are intended to improve the performance of disk I/O operations. In a single partition database configuration, you should create the root database, the CWM database, and the log database in the same partition.

In the two partition database configuration, you should create the CWM database in one partition, and the root database and the log database in the other partition.

In the three partition database configuration, you should create the root database, the CWM database, and the log database in separate partitions.


Note Performance improvement of the three partition database over the two partition database may be insignificant.

You are prompted for the database partition information during the CWM installation (either automated or manual) process as follows:

You select the multiple disk partition configuration by selecting option number two (Multiple Raw Database Disk) when prompted for the disk configuration.

Partitioning Your Hard Disks

During the installation of the Sun Solaris operating system, you will be required to partition the hard disk drive or drives in your system. This might require you to change the size of your current partitions.

One 9.1-GB Hard Disk

Table 1-3 lists the recommended partitioning for a system with one 9.1-GB hard disk.

Note Most 9.1- GB disks will not actually have 9.1-GB of available space. If a large Informix raw database is required, partition s7 prior to s3 at 2000 MB, and configure s3 last with the remaining disk space. To determine how much space remains, click on another partition to update the total free space value.

Two 4-GB Hard Disks

lists the recommended partitioning for the first 4-GB hard disk in a workstation with two 4-GB drives. When you partition the disk, follow the recommended sequence to ensure that each partition receives the correct amount of space.

First Time Login to Solaris

After installing the Sun Solaris 2.6 operating system, perform the following steps:

Step 1 Login to the workstation as user root.

Step 2 At the Solaris login window, click on Options > Session > CDE.

Step 3 Left click the TTT icon to launch the Style Manager and perform the following steps:

Step 4 Use the CDE Menu Bar to change to screens Two, Three, and Four, and select the same options for those screens. Return to screen One and close Style Manager when completed.

Step 5 Right click on the desktop and select Programs > Terminal.

Move this window to the upper-right corner of the screen.

Step 6 Right click on the desktop and select Programs > Console.

Reduce the height of this window so it displays at least five lines (to enable you to monitor system messages). Move the window so that it rests on the CDE Menu Bar and all icons are visible.

Step 7 Left click the TTT icon to launch the Style Manager, then select Startup, set Home Session..., and click OK.

This saves your startup login preferences for user root.
