Introduction

This manual is a guide to installing Cisco WAN Manager 9.2 and associated software programs on an HP-UX platform.

This version of Cisco WAN Manager (CWM) must be installed on an HP 9000/7xxx running HP-UX 10.20 operating system software. For instructions on installing the HP-UX operating system, refer to the appropriate HP documentation.

CWM runs under HP OpenView. If you already have HP OpenView installed, proceed with the CWM installation. For instructions on installing HP OpenView, refer to the appropriate HP documentation.

Cisco WAN Manager Hardware Requirements

The minimum hardware requirements are the following:

Cisco recommends that you add another SCSI-2 interface and a 2 GB or greater external hard disk drive if a single CWM network management station (NMS) is connected to a large network. This will markedly improve the performance of the Statistics Collection Manager (SCM).

Cisco WAN Manager Software Requirements

The minimum software requirements are the following:

The following software packages are provided on the Cisco WAN Manager 9.2 CD:

Cisco WAN Manager 9.2 supports the following Cisco software:

Configuring Your System for Multinetwork Support

Cisco WAN Manager (CWM) can manage up to twenty multiple networks. If you plan to manage more than eight networks, you should configure the CWM workstation buffer cache to 6 MB. You can do this before or after the installation.

To check the buffer cache setting, perform the following steps:

Step 1 Log in as root.

Step 2 Enter the following command to check the size of the buffer cache.

# /usr/sbin/sysdef | grep dbc_max_pct

The number shown is the percentage of your system memory allocated for buffer cache. Therefore, multiply your system memory by the percentage shown in dbc_max_pct to find out the size of buffer cache.

For example, if you have 256 MB of memory and dbc_max_pct is set to 3, your buffer cache size will be 7.68 MB.

To change the buffer cache setting, perform the following steps:

Step 1 Open the /stand/system file, in vi or any other editor.

Step 2 Enter the dbc_max-pct value, if it is not there already, for example:

dbc_max_pct 3

Step 3 Enter the following command to recompile the kernel.

# /usr/sbin/mk_kernel

The new kernel is saved as /stand/build/vmunix_test.

Step 4 Back up the existing kernel /stand/vmunix.

Step 5 Enter the following command to make /stand/build/vmunix_test the new kernel.

# mv /stand/build/vmunix_test /stand/vmunix

Step 6 Reboot the workstation.

Planning and Configuring the Informix OnLine Database

The CWM installation allows you to configure the CWM Informix OnLine database as a one-, two- or three-partition database. As each partition can be on a separate drive, multipartition databases are intended to improve disk I/O operations performance. In a single-partition database configuration, you should create the root database, the CWM database, and the log database in the same partition. You must have at least 550 MB disk space on your workstation for this configuration.

In the two-partition database configuration, you should create the CWM database in one partition and the root database and the log database in the other partition. You must have at least 550 MB of disk space in one partition for the CWM database and at least 44 MB of disk space in the other partition for the root database and log datebase.

In a three-partition database configuration, you should create the root database, the CWM database, and the log database in separate partitions. You must have at least 700 MB of disk space in one partition for the CWM database, at least 50 MB of disk space in the second partition for the root database, and at least 100 MB of disk space in the third partition for the log datebase.

Note Performance improvement of the three-partition database over two-partition database might be insignificant.

You are prompted for the database partition information during installation, as follows:

Disk Configuration Migration to StrataView Plus Release SV91_980604
                1) Single Raw Database Disk
                2) Multiple Raw Database Disk
                x) To Exit

Refer to Chapter 9, "Database Management," in Cisco WAN Manager Operations for a thorough explanation of the Informix OnLine database.
