Understanding CiscoWorks Windows
CiscoWorks Windows is a suite of applications that provides dynamic status, statistics, and comprehensive configuration information about Cisco devices. CiscoWorks Windows is targeted for small/medium business, departmental users, and network managers, who need tools that fit in a laptop or a workstation.
This chapter contains the following sections:
CiscoWorks Windows runs on the following operating system (OS) platforms:
- Windows 95 (OSR 2)
- Windows 98 (second edition)
- Windows NT 4.0 (workstation and server with Service Pack 5)
For online help, CiscoWorks Windows supports the following browsers:
- Netscape Navigator 4.61
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0
CiscoWorks Windows 5.0 is shipped with the following two compact disks (CDs):
- CiscoWorks Windows
- WhatsUp Gold
You can install CiscoWorks Windows 5.0 as a standalone application, or integrate it with the Ipswitch network management system (NMS) software, WhatsUp Gold. The WhatsUp Gold CD is provided with CiscoWorks Windows 5.0.
You can also integrate CiscoWorks Windows 5.0 with Castle Rock's NMS software, SNMPc if SNMPc is already installed in your system. The SNMPc CD is not provided with CiscoWorks Windows 5.0.
CiscoWorks Windows provides the following GUI based device management applications:
- CiscoView
- StackMaker (launched from CiscoView)
- Show Commands (launched from WhatsUp Gold)
- Threshold Manager (launched from WhatsUp Gold)
- WhatsUp Gold
Table 1-1 provides a brief description about these applications and lists the devices they support.
Additional devices can be added any time after the initial product release or installation. When new device packages become available, they are placed on Cisco Connection Online (CCO). Check this site to ensure that you have the latest device release.

Show Commands
| An application launched from WhatsUp Gold that enables you to display detailed system and protocol information for devices without having to remember or enter complicated command-line syntax.
| All devices with appropriate Cisco IOS features and the following switches with CLI support:

Threshold Manager
| An application launched from WhatsUp Gold that enables you to set thresholds on Cisco RMON-enabled devices and retrieve event information, thereby reducing management overhead and improving troubleshooting capabilities.
| All devices with appropriate Cisco IOS or RMON features except for the Catalyst 5000 series for Campus Manager, which uses TrafficDirector.

WhatsUp Gold
| A graphical SNMP-based network management tool that enables you to manage and monitor devices through a topology map. WhatsUp Gold provides information about your network status, and alerts you when monitored resources become unavailable.
| A variety of devices such as routers, switches, hosts, servers, hubs, workstations, bridges, LAN concentrators and printers from any vendor.

You can install CiscoWorks Windows in one of the three ways:
- Standalone (CiscoView only)---Manage and monitor one Cisco device at a time.
- Integrate with the Ipswitch NMS software, WhatsUp Gold---Manage and monitor the entire network through a topology map.
Note You must install WhatsUp Gold before installing CiscoWorks Windows 5.0.
- When you integrate with WhatsUp Gold, you can perform these tasks:
- Automatically discover all the devices on your network and graphically represent them on a topology map.
- Monitor a range of devices, including routers, switches, hosts, servers, hubs, workstations, bridges, LAN concentrators, and printers.
- Launch CiscoView, Threshold Manager, and Show Commands from the WhatsUp Gold topology map.
- Use the management information base (MIB) browser.
- View event history.
- Integrate with the Castle Rock NMS software, SNMPc, if SNMPc is already installed in your system.

The following guidelines apply when you install CiscoWorks Windows 5.0 with either CiscoWorks Windows 3.x or the CiscoWorks2000 edition of CiscoView 5.0:
- If you have CiscoWorks Windows 3.x installed in your system, and you proceed to install CiscoWorks Windows 5.0, your installation options are as follows:
- Keep CiscoWorks Windows 3.x---Allows you to keep the existing version, CiscoWorks Windows 3.x and also install the new version, CiscoWorks Windows 5.0, provided you install the new version in a different location.
- Uninstall CiscoWorks Windows 3.x---Allows you to uninstall CiscoWorks Windows 3.x before installing CiscoWorks Windows 5.0.
- If you attempt to install CiscoWorks Windows 5.0 on a system that already has the CiscoWorks2000 edition of CiscoView 5.0 installed, the CiscoWorks Windows 5.0 installation will abort and display an error message.
- If you have installed CiscoWorks Windows 5.0 in a system, and you attempt to reinstall CiscoWorks Windows 5.0 in the same system, the new installation will abort and display an error message. To resolve this, you must first uninstall the application, then reinstall it.
The following new features are supported in CiscoWorks Windows 5.0:
- WhatsUp Gold provides the following new features:
- Graphical display and monitoring of multiple network maps.
- Monitoring of user-defined services, such as a Web server using a nonstandard port.
- Multiple monitoring views of core network database, with Web access to live network information from any browser.
- Monitoring of wide range network elements, including routers, hosts, servers, workstations, bridges, hubs, LAN concentrators, and printers.
- Provides extensive notification methods for traps and alerts.
- Castle Rock's SNMPc CD is not provided in this release, but CiscoWorks Windows 5.0 will support integration with SNMPc if you already have it installed in your system.
- A new version of Show Commands is provided.
- A new version of CiscoView, CiscoView 5.0, is provided.
- CiscoView 5.0 provides the following new features:
- Device names and SNMP read and write community strings are preserved when you open new CiscoView 5.0 sessions.
- Tools menu options appear as device command buttons to the left of the graphical device display.
- Cisco Support mailer button provides direct access to the Technical Assistance Center (TAC).
- Multiple configuration dialogs for the same chassis component type allows one configuration dialog to appear per selection.
- About button provides information on device packages.
- Refresh option updates the display of all open devices.
- Direct link to CCO.
- New Look and Feel option available in Preferences.
- Device-level Help allows you to access device-specific help.
- Easier debugging with symbolic SNMP OID values are shown in the trace log.
To start CiscoWorks Windows:
Step 1 Click the task bar Start menu.
Step 2 Select Programs > CiscoWorks Windows 5.0.
These program menu options are displayed:
- Add/Delete CiscoView Device Support
- CiscoView 5.0
- Uninstall CiscoWorks Windows 5.0
- WhatsUp Gold (You will see this option only if you have integrated CiscoWorks Windows 5.0 with WhatsUp Gold.)
Note For instructions about starting CiscoWorks Windows applications, refer to the appropriate section in this guide, or refer to CiscoWorks Windows 5.0 Installation Instructions.
To uninstall CiscoWorks Windows:
Step 1 Click the task bar Start menu.
Step 2 Select Programs > CiscoWorks Windows 5.0 > Uninstall CiscoWorks Windows 5.0.
Note Uninstalling CiscoWorks Window will not automatically uninstall WhatsUp Gold.
