Overview of Patch 2

Caution Patch 2 overwrites certain Resource Manager Essentials packages, so rollback to the base version of Essentials 3.1 is not possible. You will have to uninstall and reinstall Essentials 3.1 to restore your system to its state prior to the patch installation.

Caution Patch 2 might cause you to lose your dynamic views (refer to the "Known Problems" section, bug id CSCdr86917). If this happens, you will have to recreate them after the installation.

Patch 2 for Essentials is a collection of updated packages necessary for the Resource Manager Essentials Inventory and Software Image Manager applications to manage Altiga, Catalyst 1900, and Catalyst 2820 devices. Limited Syslog support is provided: standard Essentials reports display syslog messages.

Patch 2 also includes the packages necessary for Essentials to manage Cisco voice products. The voice capabilities allow you to:

Patch 2 contains only the updated packages, not a complete Essentials image. Therefore, Resource Manager Essentials 3.1 must be installed before you can install Patch 2.

Installing Patch 2

This section contains the following information:

Patch 2 can be installed on top of Resource Manager Essentials 3.1. Only the installation paths in Table 1 are supported.

Caution If you previously uninstalled Essentials 3.1, an Essentials 3.1 bug might have removed critical files. The Patch 2 installation checks for these files, and if they are not found, displays an error message. To correct this problem, reinstall CD One or install the CD One Voice Update. After you install Patch 2, you will no longer encounter this problem in future Essentials uninstallations.
Table 1: Overview of Patch 2 Installation Paths
If you want to... Then you must...

Installing Patch 2 from CCO

Patch 2 and a Readme file explaining the installation procedure are available from CCO at the following URL:

Installing Patch 2 from the CD-ROM

Caution Patch 2 might cause you to lose your dynamic views (refer to the "Known Problems" section, bug id CSCdr86917). If this happens, you will have to recreate them after the installation.

Step 1   To make sure you can roll back to your previous configuration if needed, perform a backup of your database.

Caution Patch 2 overwrites certain Essentials files, so if you need to return to your previous system configuration, you must reinstall Essentials and will need this database backup.

Step 2   If you are installing Patch 2 on a system where an Essentials 3.1 uninstall was previously performed, reinstall CD One or install the CD One Voice Update. Refer to Installing and Setting Up CD One Second Edition on Solaris.

This is required because of an Essentials 3.1 uninstall script bug which removes files needed for subsequent installations of Essentials 3.1.

Step 3   As root, mount the Resource Manager Essentials Patch 2 CD-ROM, using either of the following methods:

For more information on mounting and unmount the CD-ROM, refer to Installing and Setting Up Resource Manager Essentials on Solaris.

Step 4   Run the installation program:

For a local installation, enter:

# cd /cdrom/cdrom0
# ./setup.sh

For a remote installation, enter:

# cd remotedir
# ./setup.sh

where remotedir is the remote location where the CD-ROM is mounted.

Note   If you are installing Patch 2 on a system where an Essentials 3.1 uninstall was previously performed, you may encounter these errors:
dbupdate.pl file missing.
You must install the CD One Voice Patch or
re-install CD_One before installing RME Voice Update.
Reinstall CD One or install the CD One Voice Patch. Refer to Installing and Setting Up CD One Second Edition on Solaris.

Step 5   To verify the installation, select CiscoWorks2000 Server > About CiscoWorks2000 > Applications and Versions:

Uninstalling Patch 2 and Essentials

Patch 2 overwrites certain Resource Manager Essentials 3.1 files, so you cannot simply uninstall Patch 2 to return to your original configuration, nor can you simply reinstall Essentials 3.1. You must uninstall and reinstall Essentials 3.1 and restore your database.

Step 1   Perform a backup of your database (refer to Step 1 in the "Installing Patch 2 from the CD-ROM" section).

Step 2   Uninstall Essentials 3.1. Refer to Installing and Setting Up Resource Manager Essentials on Solaris.

Step 3   Reinstall Essentials 3.1. Refer to Installing and Setting Up Resource Manager Essentials on Solaris.

Step 4   Restore data from the database backup made prior to the Patch 2 installation.

Caution Restoring the database from a backup permanently replaces your database with the backed up version. Also, as part of restoration, CiscoWorks2000 is shut down and restarted. Make sure you are not running any critical tasks. Otherwise, you might lose data.

# /etc/init.d/dmgtd stop
# $NMSROOT/bin/perl $NMSROOT/bin/restorebackup.pl [-force] [-s rme][-gen generationNumber] -d backupDirectory
where the options and arguments are:

-force

Forces restoration of an old backup schema

%NMSROOT%

CiscoWorks2000 installation directory

generationNumber

Backup generation number (default is last backup)

backupDirectory

Backup directory

To restore the most recent version, enter the following command:
# $NMSROOT/bin/perl $NMSROOT/bin/restorebackup.pl /var/backup
/var/adm/CSCOpx/log/restorebackup.log
# /etc/init.d/dmgtd start

Known Problems

Known problems are unexpected behaviors or defects in Resource Manager Essentials 3.1 Patch 2 software. They are graded according to severity level. These release notes contain information for severity levels 1 and 2 only.

You can search for known problems on the Cisco bug tracking system tool, called Bug Navigator II. To access Bug Navigator II, do one of the following:

Table 2: Resource Manager Essentials 3.1 Patch 2 Known Problems
Bug ID Summary Explanation

CSCdr72310

InstallShield unable to trap dbupdate failure during RME Install.

Resource Manager Essentials 3.1 Patch 2 requires a standard Windows NT dll file (CTL3D32.dll). If CTl3D32.dll is not on the system, copy the file from a standard Windows NT system into the winnt\system32\ directory before installing Patch 2.

CSCdr76492

Unable to add images to the library from 2948G device.

The 2948G device image cannot be added to the library because it is incorrectly classified as a L2L3 switch.

CSCdr77668

No syslog triggered update of inventory for Altiga.

Altiga VPN 3000 series concentrators are not automatically recognized in the inventory. To update the inventory with current device status, do one of the following:

  • Schedule inventory collection on a regular basis (weeks, days, hours).

  • Set Inventory Poller Schedule to work on a regular basis.

  • Update Inventory as a one time event for specific devices.

CSCdr81403

Baselining operation fails in some cases on IOS devices.

If you add a device image through baseline or synchronization, it might fail if the device is booted from a secondary flash device. If the device is booted from main flash, it should work.

The workaround is to import the image from the first visible device.

CSCdr86917

Dynamic view shows all the managed devices after upgrade to 3.1.1.

Dynamic views are deleted after Patch 2 is installed.

If this happens, you will have to recreate them after the installation.
