Device Configuration

Device Configuration

When you add devices to your network, Essentials automatically retrieves and archives the configuration files. Any configuration changes you make are also archived. You can search the configuration archive, create reports, and move the archive to a new location.

The following sections are presented in this chapter:

Searching For and Viewing a Configuration File

Scenario: You need to find all Cisco 2500 Series routers in your network that have an HTTP server enabled. After you find the configuration files with this string, you need to compare the contents of one configuration file with another version of the configuration running on the same device.

To search for and view a configuration file, perform the following steps:

Step 1 Select Tasks > Device Configuration > Search Archive by Pattern. The Search Archive by Pattern dialog box appears. (See Figure 5-1.)

Step 2 Enter IP http server in the Pattern Info field.

Step 3 Click Select in the Devices field.

The Device Selection dialog box appears. (See Figure 5-2.)

Step 4 Select Cisco 2500 Series routers in your network, click All under Devices, then click OK.

The Search Archive by Pattern dialog box is updated with the pattern and devices you specified.

Step 5 Click the Version radio button for the Report Type, then click Finish.

The Configuration Summary Report displays the devices whose configurations contain the IP HTTP server text string.

Step 6 For the first device listed in the Configuration Summary Report, click on the configuration link in the Most Recent Archive column.

The Device Configuration Viewer window displays the configuration file contents. You can view the configuration to see where the IP HTTP server is specified.

Creating and Running a Custom Configuration Report

Scenario: Every morning you need to know the status of 10 devices. To save time, you need to create a report, which you'll run every morning, that automatically gathers the device configuration files.

Creating a Custom Configuration Report

Step 1 Select Tasks > Device Configuration > Custom Reports.

The Custom Reports dialog box appears.

Step 2 Click Create.

The search criteria selections appear. (See Figure 5-3.)

Step 3 Enter a name for the report in the Report Title field, for example, Report1.

Step 4 Click View, then click Select.

The Device Selection dialog box appears. (See Figure 5-4.)

Step 5 Select the view option to monitor, then click OK.

The Custom Reports dialog box is updated. You can then select options using the radio buttons to show report summary, report details, or a quick view report.

Step 6 Click Preview Report to view the report.

The Configuration Summary Report displays the configurations that match your report criteria. (See Figure 5-5.)

Step 7 Click Close to close the report.

Step 8 Click Save Report Criteria in the Custom Reports dialog box.

A confirmation message appears.

Running a Custom Configuration Report

Scenario: Now that you have created a configuration report, you need to run the report to gather the configuration files.

To run a custom configuration report, perform the following steps:

Step 1 Select Tasks > Device Configuration > Custom Reports.

The Custom Reports dialog box appears. (See Figure 5-6.)

Step 2 Select the report name you want to run, (for example, Weekly config rpt), in the Custom Reports field, then click Run.

The Configuration Summary Report displays the configurations that match your criteria.

Updating the Configuration Archive

Scenario: You need to compare two router configurations. You recently changed both configurations, so you need to ensure that the archive is current before you perform the comparison.

To update the configuration archive, perform the following steps:

Step 1 Select Tasks > Device Configuration > Update Archive.

The Update Archive dialog box appears. (See Figure 5-7.)

Step 2 Click on a view in the Views column, then click on two device names in the Devices column.

Step 3 Click Finish.

A confirmation message appears.

Troubleshooting a Misconfigured Device

Scenario: Your manager just informed you there is a problem with a Cisco 4000 Series router, and she thinks it relates to the router configuration. She tells you that another Cisco 4000 Series router is operating correctly. You need to compare the configurations.

To troubleshoot a misconfigured device, perform the following steps:

Step 1 Select Tasks > Device Configuration > Compare Configurations.

The Compare Configurations dialog box appears. (See Figure 5-8.)

Step 2 Click 2 Versions of Different Devices.

The Compare Configurations dialog box displays the search criteria. (See Figure 5-9.)

Step 3 Select the Device check box, then click Select to select the devices to include in your search.

Step 4 Click Latest for Show Configs, then click Finish.

The Configuration Version Compare Report appears. (See Figure 5-10.)

Step 5 Click on the two device names. The names appear in the File 1 and File 2 fields.

Step 6 Click Compare.

Another Configuration Version Compare Report appears. (See Figure 5-11.)

The Diffs Only option is selected, and the differences between the two configurations are displayed in blue text in the two right columns.

Step 7 Click Close to close the report.

Integrating Cisco Netsys Configurations

Scenario: You have been using the Netsys Enterprise/Solver family of simulation-based network planning and problem-solving products. Specifically, you have been using the Connectivity Tools to assist you in designing and planning efforts related to network connectivity. Now you want to integrate your Netsys configuration files into the Essentials configuration archive.

To integrate Netsys configurations, perform the following steps:

Step 1 Select Admin > Device Configuration > General Setup.

The Configuration Manager Admin dialog box appears. (See Figure 5-12.)

Step 2 Click the Netsys Setup tab.

Step 3 Enter the Netsys username and password in the corresponding fields.

Step 4 Because Netsys is not installed on the same machine on which you installed Essentials, click Remote, then enter the name of the machine on which Netsys is installed.

Step 5 Enter the name of the directory in which Netsys is installed in the Install Directory field.

Step 6 Enter the fully qualified path name of the baseline configuration in the Baseline Name field, which will be created on the Netsys host machine using the Essentials configurations. This baseline model will be used for all configuration and report updates.

Scenario: Although by default Netsys reports are run daily at 0030, you want the reports to run once a week at 0700.

Step 1 Click Select next to the Schedule field to change the Netsys reports schedule.

The Netsys Schedule dialog box appears. (See Figure 5-13.)

Step 2 Select today's date in the New Schedule section Starting Date field.

Step 3 Enter 0700 in the Starting Time field.

Step 4 Enter 1 in the Every field, select weeks from the drop-down list box and click OK.

You are returned to the Configuration Manager Admin dialog box.

Step 5 Click Apply.

A message shows that the Netsys setup changes were made. The parameters you entered are stored in the Essentials database, and the Netsys configurations are integrated into the Essentials configuration archive.

Viewing Netsys Reports

Scenario: You just integrated your Netsys configurations with the Essentials configuration archive and you want to view the Netsys configuration reports.

To view the Netsys configuration reports, perform the following steps:

Step 1 Select Tasks > Device Configuration > NetSys Report.

The Stored Netsys Reports appears. (See Figure 5-14.)

Step 2 Click Run All Reports for the date and time you want to see.

The Stored Netsys Reports displays all baseline reports for that particular date and time. (See Figure 5-15.)

Three reports are displayed: Service Level Management, Network Health, and Performance Reports for Default Data Definition. Each report contains the following information:

Step 3 Click on the Historical Configuration File Changes report under the Network Health report type.

The Historical Configuration File Changes report displays the names of the routers, and the dates and times their configuration files are modified. (See Figure 5-16.)
