Interacting with the CiscoWorks2000 Desktop

The CiscoWorks2000 desktop is the interface for the CiscoWorks2000 network management applications. The desktop is a graphical user interface (GUI) that runs in a web browser.

Logging In

If you have installed the CiscoWorks2000 package and are logging in for the first time, you can use the reserved "admin" user name and password. To log in:

Step 1 Enter admin in both the User Name and Password fields of the Login Manager (see the Figure 2-1).

Figure 2-1: Initial Login

Step 2 Click Connect or press Enter. You are now logged in.

Step 3 Change the admin password using CiscoWorks2000 Server>Security >Modify My Profile.

Caution When the system is installed initially, admin is the default password. To prevent all users from accessing privileged applications, change the password for admin immediately after installation.

Using the Desktop

The desktop is the primary user interface and the launch point for all administration, applications, and tasks. After you log into CiscoWorks2000, the desktop includes the Logout and Help buttons, navigation tree, the message window, and the applications window (see Figure 2-2).

Buttons

Two buttons are located directly above the navigation tree:

Navigation Tree

The navigation tree consists of several drawers, each of which contains a group of folders. These folders contain groups of associated or similar tasks, tools, reports, or other options.

The contents of the navigation tree varies depending on which applications or suites you have installed and your user role. However, certain drawers and features are common to all applications and suites (see Table 2-1).

Table 2-1: Common Navigation Tree Items
Drawer Description

Home

Includes links to additional resources on Cisco Connection Online (CCO) and a folder for storing frequently accessed tasks

CiscoWorks2000 Server

Includes applications and tools for setting up, administering, and diagnosing the CiscoWorks2000 Server

Management Connection

Includes applications for adding external links to CiscoWorks2000 and a collection of links to commonly used tools on CCO

Device Manager

Includes applications used for device management, such as CiscoView

When using the navigation tree, the following conventions apply:

Message Window

This is a web-based "tips-of-the-day" window that displays product upgrade information, product tips, and other support information. The CiscoWorks2000 Server updates messages automatically once every 24-hours from Cisco's web site (CCO).

The contents of this frame are generated dynamically and can be customized. Refer to the online help for instructions on customizing the contents of this window.

Applications Window

The right frame of the CiscoWorks2000 desktop contains interfaces for various applications. Some applications display information and dialog boxes in the applications window; other applications might display this information in a separate browser window.

Creating Shortcuts

You can use the My Shortcuts option to place frequently used tasks in your own shortcut folder, assigned to your user name. To create a shortcut, drag any item in the navigation tree to the Home drawer. Select Home>My Shortcuts to access these shortcuts. These tasks remain in the My Shortcuts folder across login sessions. You can also delete shortcuts using the Delete Shortcut option.

Using Online Help

Each CiscoWorks2000 application includes online help that provides procedural and conceptual information to assist you in using CiscoWorks2000.

Online help also contains a search engine, which enables keyword searching on the help topics, an index, from which you can look up typical network tasks, and a glossary that defines CiscoWorks2000 terms.

Access online help in one of these ways:
