Before You Begin

Before You Begin

This chapter describes the factors that you should consider before installing Essentials and CWSI Campus on a Solaris system, and a high-level quick reference of the tasks required to install both products.

This chapter contains the following sections:

Product Structure

The CiscoWorks2000 Family of Products consists of two products: Resource Manager Essentials (Essentials) and CWSI Campus. It ships in two configurations:

If you order Essentials only, you do not receive the CWSI Campus product or documentation (other than the CWSI Campus information in this document). If you order Essentials and CWSI Campus together, you receive both products and their documentation.

Caution You must install Essentials on the system before installing CWSI Campus. CWSI Campus will not install if Essentials is not installed first.

System Requirements

The system requirements for CW2000 are summarized in Table 1-1. The requirements listed for Essentials are for the server system only. For Essentials client system requirements, refer to the "Installing Essentials" chapter, "Client Requirements" section.

For more current and detailed system requirements and information about how many devices you can manage with Essentials and CWSI Campus, refer to the Release Notes for CiscoWorks2000 (for Solaris).

  • Sufficient space for downloaded files in the /var directory. See the "Downloaded Files" section for more information.

  • Swap space equal to double the amount of memory (RAM). For example, if your system has 256 MB of RAM, you should have 512 MB of swap space.

  • The /tmp directory must be on a swap partition.

  • 4 GB on the partition on which you intend to install the product (the default is /opt).

Essentials

1See the "Installing Essentials" chapter, "Server Requirements" section for information about checking the available disk space on your system.
2Solaris 2.5.1 might require a patch. See the "Installing Essentials" chapter, "Server Requirements" section for detailed information.
3No browser is required for the Essentials server system. Client systems must have a supported browser installed. Refer to the "Installing Essentials" chapter, "Client Requirements" section for more information.
4The browser is used only to display the CWSI Campus online help.

Essentials requires either Solaris 2.6 or Solaris 2.5.1. If you are using Solaris 2.5.1, Cisco recommends that you use patch 103738-03 or later because it fixes a known Solaris problem with syslog. The Solaris patch is available only to users with Sun service contracts. You can find additional information about the Solaris 2.5.1 patch at the following location:

http://www.cisco.com/kobayashi/sw-center/netmgmt/cw2000.

CWSI Campus requires patch 103640-17.tar or later for Java Runtime Environment 1.1.6 on Solaris 2.5.1. Refer to the section "Patch Requirement for JRE 1.1.6 on Solaris 2.5.1" in Chapter 3 for additional information.

Essentials System Configuration Recommendations

This section provides more information to help you select a system that best meets your specific needs.

Determining Minimum System Configuration

Three major considerations can help you to determine your minimum system configuration requirements:

    1. Consider the number of managed devices to be polled by Availability.

    2. Consider the number of Syslog messages expected daily.

    3. Consider the number of managed devices expected in Inventory and
    Device Configuration.

Availability is the primary consideration, after which you can then consider syslog messages and managed device expectations and determine your needs accordingly.

Improving Essentials Server Performance

To improve system performance for Essentials, consider the following options:

Improving Essentials User Report Response Time

Table 1-2 lists system recommendations for Solaris running Essentials only.

CWSI Campus System Configuration Recommendations

For CWSI Campus, use a system configuration that supports the number of devices you want to manage using CWSI Campus and the number of end hosts you plan to manage using UserTracking. Select a configuration that will support the application with the higher requirement. For example, if you have 82 devices and 2500 end hosts, select the Ultra 10 or better. See Table 1-3 for the CWSI Campus recommended system configurations.

Note CWSI Campus performance is greatly affected by the performance of the virtual memory subsystem in Solaris. Therefore, increase your swap size to 300 MB.

Downloaded Files

Files that Essentials downloads to the server are stored in the /var directory or its subdirectories. Ensure that there is sufficient available space in the /var directory for all files that you plan to download.

Typically, the majority of these downloaded files are device software image files. These files are up to 4 MB in size. To determine how much available space you need in the /var directory, multiply the number of device software image files you plan to store by 4 MB. For example, if you plan to store 30 software image files, you will need at least 120 MB (30 x 4 MB) available in the /var directory.

In addition, you will need space for some smaller downloaded files and temporary files. To accommodate these other space needs, add at least 10% to the space that you need for software image files for your final calculation of available space in the /var directory. In the previous example, you would need at least 132 MB [120 MB + (120 MB x .10)] of available space in the /var directory.

Product Upgrade Paths

This section describes the supported upgrade paths for this product release.

Essentials Upgrade Paths

The following Essentials upgrade paths are supported in this product release:

These upgrades are performed using the Essentials installation program. Refer to the e chapter for instructions for using the installation program.

Caution If you upgrade Resource Manager 1.1 to Essentials 2.1, CWSI 2.1 will not work on your system. You must also upgrade CWSI 2.1 to CWSI Campus 2.3 to continue using the CWSI/CWSI Campus product.

CWSI Campus Upgrade Paths

The following CWSI Campus upgrade paths are supported in this product release:

These upgrades are performed using the CWSI Campus installation program. Refer to the "Installing CWSI Campus" chapter for instructions for using the installation program.
