Before You Begin

Before You Begin

This chapter describes the factors to consider and tasks to perform before you install Essentials and CWSI Campus. Although the two products have separate CDs and installation programs, they are part of the CiscoWorks2000 Family of Products and are related in several important ways.

This chapter contains the following sections:

Product Structure

The CiscoWorks2000 Family of Products consists of two products: Resource Manager Essentials (Essentials) and CWSI Campus. It ships in two configurations:

If you order Essentials only, you do not receive the CWSI Campus product or documentation (other than the CWSI Campus information in this document). If you order Essentials and CWSI Campus together, you receive both products and their documentation.

Caution You must install Essentials on the system before installing CWSI Campus. The install procedure for CWSI Campus will not work unless Essentials is installed first.

System Requirements

Table 1-1 summarizes the hardware requirements for CW2000. The requirements listed for Essentials are for the server system only. For Essentials client system requirements, refer to the "Installing Essentials" chapter, "Essentials Client Requirements" section.

For more current and detailed system requirements, and information about how many devices you can manage with Essentials and Campus, refer to the Release Notes for CW2000 (HP-UX).

1See the "Server Requirements" section in Chapter 2 for information about checking the available disk space on your system.
2HP-UX version 10.2 and 11.0 requires HP DCE/9000 Core Client Software. Additionally, HP-UX 10.2 requires the PHSS_15043 aCC patch or a superseding patch, and HP-UX 11.0 requires the PHSS_14577 aCC patch or a superseding patch. See the "Supported Device Import Software" section in Chapter 2 for more information.
3No browser is required for the Essentials server system. Client systems must have a supported browser installed. Refer to the "Essentials Client Requirements" section in Chapter 2 for more information.
4The browser is used only to display the CWSI Campus online help.

Essentials System Recommendations

This section provides further information to help you choose a system that best meets your specific needs.

Determining Minimum System Configuration

Three major considerations can help you to determine your minimum system configuration requirements:

    1. The number of managed devices to be polled by Availability.

    2. The number of Syslog messages expected daily.

    3. The number of managed devices expected in Inventory and Device Configuration.

Availability is the primary consideration, after which you can then consider syslog messages and managed device expectations and determine your needs accordingly.

Improving Essentials Server Performance

To improve system performance for Essentials, consider the following options:

Improving Essentials User Report Response Time

Table 1-2 lists system recommendations for HP-UX systems running Essentials only.

CWSI Campus System Recommendations

For CWSI Campus, use a system configuration that will support the number of devices you want to manage using CWSI Campus and the number of end hosts you plan to manage using User Tracking. Select a configuration that will support the application with the higher requirement. For example, if you have 200 devices and 5,000 end hosts, choose the dual processor.
