The VlanDirector application provides an interface for creating, modifying, and deleting VLANs in the Names window. The VlanDirector application also adds VLAN and LANE information to the CWSI Campus map.
The following sections provide information about how you can navigate in the VlanDirector application:
The CWSI Campus map window is the starting point for the VlanDirector application. To start the VlanDirector application from the CWSI Campus map window, click the VlanDirector icon in the toolbar (see Figure 3-1) or select Tools>VlanDirector from the CWSI Campus menu bar.
When you start the VlanDirector application from the CWSI Campus map, the VlanDirector window opens, as shown in Figure 3-2. The VlanDirector window contains all the menu selections and commands you need to create, modify, and delete VLANs.
The following components comprise the VlanDirector window:
The menu bar contains the commands that allow you to create, modify, and delete VLANs. Other commands on the menu bar allow you to display or print VLAN information. See Table 3-1 for a list of menu commands and the functions they perform.

The toolbar contains shortcuts for commonly used tasks (see Figure 3-3).
The toolbar contains these buttons:
The Names window contains a toolbar for performing tasks, such as organizing and managing VLANs. The Names window also displays the names of existing folders and VLANs discovered in your network.
Folders contain VLANs that have been created using the VlanDirector application and existing VLANs discovered in your network. When you create folders, name them according to the types of VLANs in them.
A plus sign next to a folder indicates that the folder contains VLANs. A minus sign next to the folder indicates that the folder does not contain any VLANs or that the contents of the folder are currently being displayed.
When you click on a folder to open it, the VLANs appear. The icon next to the VLAN name indicates the type of VLAN (Figure 3-4).
The colored box next to the VLAN name indicates the color assigned to the VLAN. There are 13 standard colors available, or you can create your own custom colors. See "Customizing VLAN Colors" in Chapter 4, "Creating and Modifying VLANs".
When you select a VLAN in the Names window, information about the devices belonging to the VLAN is displayed in the Membership window (see Figure 3-5).
The following information is displayed in the Membership window:
The status bar across the bottom of the VlanDirector window displays system messages---for example, the number of domains, fabrics, and VLANs discovered.
Step 1 Select Find from the toolbar.
The VlanDirector - Find window opens (Figure 3-6).
Step 2 If you know the VLAN name, enter it in the What field.
Step 3 If you are unsure of the VLAN name, you can scroll through the list of all VLANs in the Matches field. Click the name of the VLAN you want to find.
Step 4 Click the Ignore Case checkbox to search for the VLAN name without case sensitivity.
Step 5 Click Find.
When the VLAN is found, it is automatically highlighted in the Names window.
You can use the highlighting filters on the CWSI Campus map to selectively display VLAN and LANE information. You can also highlight VLAN devices and links on the CWSI Campus map.
When you start the VlanDirector application from the CWSI Campus map window, the VlanDirector application adds VLAN management and LANE management filters to the CWSI Campus map window (see Figure 3-7). These filters allow you to display additional information about a VLAN.
Step 1 Select a VLAN in the Names window in the VlanDirector application.
The VLAN is highlighted in its assigned color on the CWSI Campus map and the name of the VLAN appears next to the VLAN option in the Map Highlighting box.
Step 2 Click the plus sign (+) to display additional options.
Step 3 Click the check box next to any option to highlight those elements for the selected VLAN on the CWSI Campus map.
See Table 3-2 for descriptions of the highlight options.
| Option | Highlights |
|---|---|
| VTP Trunks | Links that are configured for VTP |
| VTP Devices |
|
Devices that are configured as servers for VTP | |
Devices that are configured as clients for VTP | |
Devices that are configured as transparent devices for VTP | |
| Spanning Tree |
|
Links that are in the forwarding state | |
Links that are in the blocking state |
Step 1 Select an ATM VLAN in the Names window in the VlanDirector application.
The ATM VLAN is highlighted in its assigned color on the CWSI Campus map.
Step 2 Click the plus sign next to LANE.
The Client, LE Server, and Config Server options appear.
Step 3 Click the plus sign, if shown, next to the options to display suboptions, or click the check box to highlight those elements for the selected ATM VLAN on the CWSI Campus map.
See Table 3-3 for descriptions of the map highlighting options.
| Option | Highlights |
|---|---|
| Client | Clients in the selected ATM-VLAN |
| LE Server |
|
| Active servers in the selected ATM-VLAN |
| Backup servers in the selected ATM-VLAN |
| Config Server |
|
| Master configuration servers in the selected ATM-VLAN |
| Backup configuration servers for the selected ATM-VLAN |
You also can selectively highlight devices on the CWSI Campus map that participate in specific VLANs.
Step 1 In the Names window, press Ctrl and click two or more VLAN names.
You must select multiple VLANs because the & and / buttons are disabled if you select only one VLAN in the Names window.
Step 2 Click the & button in the VlanDirector toolbar to highlight devices that participate in all of the selected VLANs.
Step 3 Click the / button to highlight devices that participate in any of the selected VLANs.
