This appendix provides additional information about installing the required Essentials server software on your system before installing Essentials.
The major steps required to install the required server software are as follows:
Step 1 Verify that the system has Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 US English or Japanese version or Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0 US English or Japanese version installed, and install one of them if none are installed.
Step 2 Verify that Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 is installed, and install it if it is not installed.
Step 3 Verify that Internet Explorer 4.0 with Service Pack 1 is installed, and install it if it is not installed.
Step 4 Verify that the required components of Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack are installed, and install them if they are not installed.
These are the key points to remember when installing the required server software:
![]() | Caution This sample procedure was accurate when this document was published. However, the procedure for installing the required Microsoft software is determined by Microsoft. It has changed in the past, and it may change again at any time. This sample procedure is provided here purely for reference. |
This sample procedure includes steps to determine if the required software is already installed, and steps to install it if it is not already installed. The full procedure can take over an hour to complete and can involve the download of approximately 100 MB of software, depending on the software that is already installed on your system.
Some of the options in this procedure differ slightly between Windows NT Workstation 4.0 and Windows NT Server 4.0. In these cases, the following indicators are used:
To install the required server software on your Windows NT system, follow these steps:
Step 1 Start with Windows NT Workstation 4.0 or Windows NT Server 4.0 installed on your system.
Step 2 Verify or install (if necessary) Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3.
(a) Select Start > Programs > Administrative Tools > Windows NT Diagnostics.
(b) Select the Version tab.
If the information Version 4.0 (Build 1381: Service Pack 3) appears, Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 is already installed; go to Step 3.
If this information does not appear, Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 is not installed. Install it now.
You can download the Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 from the URL http://www.microsoft.com/msdownload/.
Step 3 Verify or install (if necessary) Internet Explorer 4.01 with Service Pack 1 (IE 4.0 SP1).
(a) Select Internet Explorer Help > About Internet Explorer from within Internet Explorer.
If the following information appears, IE 4.0 SP1 is already installed on your system; go to Step 4:
Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 Version 4.72.3110.8 Update versions: ;SP1;
If this information does not appear, IE 4.0 SP1 is not installed.
(b) Install IE 4.0 SP1 now, selecting the following options:
You can download Internet Explorer 4.0 with Service Pack 1 from the URL http://www.microsoft.com/ie/download/.
Step 4 Verify the required Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack Components.
If all of the required components are installed, your server is ready to run the Essentials installation program. Skip Step 5 and refer to the "Running the Essentials Installation Program" section.
If any of the required components are not installed, you must install the Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack. Refer to Step 5.
(a) Verify that Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack is installed by verifying that the menu item Start > Programs > Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack exists.
(b) Verify that Microsoft Management Console and Internet Service Manager are installed by Launching the Internet Service Manager.
When the Microsoft Management Console appears, verify that Internet Information Server appears in the Console Root folder.
(c) Verify that the Windows Scripting Host is installed by typing the command cscript at a DOS command prompt.
If a line similar to the following appears then the Windows Scripting Host is installed:
Microsoft (R) Windows Scripting Host Version 5.0 for Windows
If this line does not appear then the Windows Scripting Host is not installed.
Step 5 Install Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack.
(a) Enter this URL in your Web browser:
(b) Follow the Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack download links until you reach the Registration pages.
Complete the registration however you wish. The registration will prompt you to select which components you intend to download; your response to this prompt---or any others in the registration---will not affect the download and installation of the software.
When you finish registering a page appears that presents you with two options for downloading the software.
(c) Select the option that allows you to use the Download Wizard.
You are prompted to run the Download Wizard or save it to disk.
(d) Select the option to run the Download Wizard.
The Download Wizard runs. The licensing dialog box appears.
(e) Click Yes to accept.
The Download Options dialog box appears.
(f) Select the Install radio button, then click Next.
A dialog box appears that prompts you to select between three installation options.
(g) Select Full Installation, then click Next.
Follow the Download Wizard's instructions to complete the download.
Several dialog boxes will appear and disappear. There may also be a short time when no dialog is present while the computer is processing the installation.
The download program starts the setup program automatically. When the setup program begins running, the dialog box titles change from Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack to Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack Setup.
Continue with the setup program until you reach a dialog box asking you to select between Upgrade Only and Upgrade Plus (NTSRVR), or Minimum, Typical and Custom (NTWS) installation options.
(h) Select Custom (NTSRVR) or Upgrade Plus (NTWS).
A dialog box appears with Select Components at the top and a list of components.
(i) Select Internet Information Server (NTSRVR) or Personal Web Server (NTWS), then click Show Subcomponents.
In the dialog box that appears, make sure that the Internet Service Manager subcomponent is checked. Click OK.
Return to the previous Select Components dialog box and make sure that the Microsoft Management Console and Windows Scripting Host components are selected.
(j) Click Next to finish component selection.
(k) Follow the installation program's prompts to finish the installation.
