Customizing the CWSI Campus Map

You can modify the CWSI Campus map to change the location of device icons or links, save maps, remove devices from the network map, and add and remove background images to your network maps.

Follow the instructions in the following sections for tips on customizing the CWSI Campus map:

Moving a Device or Link

You can move a device or link by dragging it to a different location. To save the changed network layout after moving devices or links, from the CWSI Campus map select File>Save Layout.

Deleting Devices

You cannot delete devices from the CWSI Campus map. If a device appears that you want to remove, use one of these methods:

This solution works well if the device is in your network, but you do not want to display it on the CWSI Campus map.
This solution works best for erroneously discovered devices that are not really in your network, or if you have removed a device since the initial discovery.

Adding and Removing a Background Image

You can add a background image such as a campus or geographic map to your network. Follow the instructions in these sections to learn how to use background images:

Adding a Background Image

Step 1 Select Bookmarks>Add Background Image.

The CWSI Campus Add Background window opens.

Step 2 In the Filename URL window, click Browse to display the list of images and maps that shipped with CWSI Campus or enter the URL for the image you want to add.

Step 3 Select the image you want to add to your network map.

Step 4 Click Open.

Step 5 In the Filename URL window, click OK.

The selected image is displayed as the background to your map.


Note You can also use your own image in GIF format as a background image.

Removing a Background Image

Step 1 From the CWSI Campus map, select Bookmarks>Edit.

The CWSI Campus Edit Bookmarks window opens.

Step 2 Select the image you want to delete.

Step 3 Click Delete to remove the image.

Using Bookmarks

To mark a specified area on the CWSI Campus map so you can find it easily, you can add a bookmark. You can also use the bookmark feature to save a map or portion of the map that you want to retrieve for use later.

Follow the instructions in these sections for tips on working with bookmarks:

Adding a Bookmark

Step 1 In the CWSI Campus map, display the area where you want to add the marker.

Step 2 Select Bookmarks>Add.

The CWSI Campus Add Bookmark window opens.

Step 3 In the Name field, enter a name for the bookmark.

Step 4 Click OK to save the bookmark.

The Bookmark name is displayed in the Bookmarks menu.

Step 5 To return to the marked location, select the newly named bookmark from the Bookmarks menu.

Deleting a Bookmark

Step 1 Select Bookmarks>Edit.

The CWSI Campus Edit Bookmarks window displays current bookmarks.

Step 2 Select the bookmark you want to delete.

Step 3 Click Delete to remove the bookmark.

Modifying a Bookmark

Step 1 Select Bookmarks>Edit.

The CWSI Campus Edit Bookmarks window displays current bookmarks.

Step 2 Select the bookmark you want to edit.

Step 3 Click Modify to edit the bookmark.

Using Bookmarks---An Example

You might find it useful to be able to easily locate specific network information, such as a VTP domain in the network map. You can select a VTP domain in the CWSI Campus map and place a bookmark at that location so you can easily redisplay and find the devices and links that comprise that VTP domain.

Step 1 From the CWSI Campus map, select Tools>VlanDirector to start the VlanDirector application.

The VlanDirector Names window opens.

Step 2 In the Names window, select the VTP domain you want to manage.

The devices from the selected domain are highlighted in the CWSI Campus map.

Step 3 Select the highlighted devices. From the CWSI Campus map, select Edit>Select Highlighted.

Step 4 Select View>Zoom to Selected Devices to display only the selected devices from the VTP domain.

Step 5 From the CWSI Campus map, select Bookmarks>Add.

The CWSI Campus Add Bookmark window opens.

Step 6 In the Name field, enter the name for the bookmarked VTP domain view.

Step 7 To retrieve the VTP domain view at a later time, from the CWSI Campus map select the name of the bookmark you just created from the Bookmarks menu.

Modifying Map Features

You can modify and customize some map features to suit your operating environment. For example, you can change the display colors and map layout of the network map. Use the CWSI Campus Properties window to customize your network map.

Follow the instructions in these sections to modify the map features in the CWSI Campus Properties window:

Changing Colors

You can change the default colors for the map foreground, map background, selection, highlighting, and blinking colors. You can select a predefined or custom color.

Step 1 From the CWSI Campus map, select Options>Properties to display the CWSI Campus Properties window.

Step 2 From the CWSI Campus Properties window, select Map.

Step 3 Display the drop-down list for the color type you want to change.

Step 4 Select the new color.

Step 5 Click OK in the Properties window.

Changing the Map Layout

You can change the map layout, such as the window size and map design.

Step 1 From the CWSI Campus map, select Options>Properties to display the CWSI Campus Properties window.

Step 2 From the CWSI Campus Properties window, select Map.

Step 3 Select the Layout Style you want to use.

Step 4 Click OK in the Properties window.

Displaying Shortened Domain Names

You can shorten the domain names that appear on device and link labels on the CWSI Campus map.

Step 1 From the CWSI Campus map, select Options>Properties to display the CWSI Campus Properties window.

Step 2 In the CWSI Campus Properties window, select Map.

Step 3 In the Domain Suffix field, enter the shortened domain name you want to use.

Step 4 Select the Trim Domain Suffix on Labels option.

The device and link labels on the CWSI Campus map appear with truncated host names.
