Viewing the CWSI Campus Map

Viewing the CWSI Campus Map

The CWSI Campus map displays the physical state of your network, including switches, routers, and links. The CWSI Campus map also serves as a starting point for CWSI Campus applications, and allows you to display reports about your network status.

These sections provide you with the information you need to familiarize yourself with the CWSI Campus map:

Displaying the CWSI Campus Map

When you first start CWSI Campus, the CWSI Campus map appears as is shown in Figure 4-1.

Figure 4-1: CWSI Campus Map

Only those devices and links that are discovered in your network appear in the CWSI Campus map. Therefore, your discovered network will appear differently than the network in the CWSI Campus map in Figure 4-1.

As you use CWSI Campus, you will notice that the devices and links listed change dynamically to display only those devices and links that CWSI Campus discovers in your network.

The CWSI Campus map contains several sections that provide ways to highlight, access, or view network information or status. (See Table 4-1.)

Using Map Highlighting Filters

The Map Highlighting filters on the CWSI Campus map allow you to selectively highlight specific devices, links, and networking services.

These sections describe the different filters available:

Device and Link Filters

The Device and Link filters are useful if you want to highlight a specific set of devices. For example, if you are deciding where to add a device to your network, you might want to check where the existing Catalyst 5000 switches are located.

To find specific device types, in the Map Highlighting window, select the check box next to Device Types or Link Types. This displays the drop-down list of available device and link types in your network. Select the items you want to display.

Selecting multiple options (such as a device and a link) in the Map Highlighting window is similar to a Boolean AND expression, which requires that all criteria be met in order to highlight devices on the map. Therefore, only those devices supporting active links of the selected type are displayed.

Following are examples of how to highlight specific devices in your network:

To highlight all Catalyst 5000 switches, select the C5000 selection box under the Device Types section in the Map Highlighting filters window.
The Catalyst 5000 switches in your network map are highlighted.
To highlight all Ethernet links, select the Ethernet link check box under the Link Types section in the Map Highlighting filters window.
The Ethernet links in your network map are highlighted.
If you select Catalyst 5000 switches and Ethernet links from the Map Highlighting filters window, all Catalyst 5000 switches supporting active Ethernet links are highlighted on the network map.
Tips

You can also use the CWSI Campus Find window to locate a specific device name or address by searching by the device name, the device address, or the name of an end-user workstation connected to the switch.

Step 1 From the CWSI Campus map window, select Edit>Find.

Step 2 In the Find Device By field, select the Name, IP Address, or User's End Node by which you want to search.

Step 3 Click Find to start the search.

The switch that you searched for is highlighted in the CWSI Campus map window. If you have searched on User's End Node, the highlighted switch is the one into which the end-user node is plugged.

VLAN Management Filters

When you start the VlanDirector application from the CWSI Campus map window, the VlanDirector application adds VLAN management filters to the CWSI Campus map window. These filters allow you to display additional information about a VLAN.

Step 1 Select a VLAN in the Names window in the VlanDirector application.

The VLAN is highlighted in its assigned color on the CWSI Campus map and the name of the VLAN appears next to the VLAN option in the Map Highlighting box.

Step 2 Click the plus sign (+) to display additional options.

Step 3 Click the check box next to any option to highlight those elements for the selected VLAN on the CWSI Campus map. See Table 4-4 for descriptions of the highlight options.

LANE Management Filters

When you start the VlanDirector application from the CWSI Campus map window, the VlanDirector application adds LANE management filters to the CWSI Campus map window. These filters allow you to display additional information about an ATM VLAN.

Step 1 Select an ATM VLAN in the Names window in the VlanDirector application.

The ATM VLAN is highlighted in its assigned color on the CWSI Campus map.

Step 2 Click the plus sign (+) next to LANE.

The Client, LE Server, and Config Server options appear.

Step 3 Click the plus sign, if shown, next to the options to display suboptions, or click the check box to highlight those elements for the selected ATM VLAN on the CWSI Campus map. See Table 4-5 for descriptions of the map highlighting options.

Multilayer Switching Filters

You can use CWSI Campus to help manage the Multilayer Switching (MLS) devices in your network. MLS enables hardware-based Layer 3 switching to relieve routers from forwarding unicast IP data packets over shared media networking technologies such as Ethernet. MLS consists of the following:

If you are using multilayer switching on your network, the MLS switches and routers are displayed on the discovered map. You can use the MLS Devices highlighting filters to locate the specific MLS devices on the network map.

Step 1 Click the plus sign (+) on the MLS Devices section to display additional options.

Step 2 Click the check box next to any option to highlight specific MLS devices.

The MLS switches and routers are highlighted on the CWSI Campus map.

Discrepancy Filters

Use the discrepancy filters to selectively display specific discrepancies in your network.

Using the Panner

The panner is a reduced view of your network map. You can use it to quickly move to a specific region of your network, which is particularly useful if your network is large.

The panner includes a view window that represents the region that is currently visible on the main map. As you zoom in or out on the main map, the size of this area changes. Use the panner to center the window over the part of the map you are interested in viewing.

Using the ANI Status Button

The ANI Status button provides you with information about the status of the background ANI processes, such as idle, discovery, and first discovery. It is updated automatically every minute, but you can also click the ANI Status button to see the current ANI state.

Interpreting the Status Bar

The Status bar displays the status of requests and messages describing what is happening when you perform a task. The following are examples of messages displayed:
