When you install CWSI Campus, it automatically discovers your network devices starting with the seed device you specified during installation and displays a map of your network in the CWSI Campus map window.
You can use the discovery process to force network discovery. You can also modify the discovery process, for example, to change a network timeout interval.
The following sections provide you with detailed information to successfully discover your network:
CWSI Campus uses a background process called asynchronous network interface (ANI) to perform its discovery. The ANI process uses the following protocols:
If you have properly prepared for discovery, CWSI Campus automatically discovers your network. However, you can make any of the following changes in the discovery process:
From the CWSI Campus map window, select View>Rediscover Map. The Discovery process runs and updates the current network map.
You may need to rediscover a device because a condition or attribute about that device has changed since the last discovery.
Step 1 Select the device on the CWSI Campus map.
Step 2 Select Edit>Rediscover Device.
After the initial network discovery, you can modify certain parameters, such as the discovery and polling intervals; extend discovery beyond routers; and change or add the seed device used for discovery.
To change the discovery parameters, follow these steps:
Step 1 From the CWSI Campus map, select Options>Properties.
The CWSI Properties window opens.
Step 2 In the Properties window, select the Discovery tab.
The Discovery options are displayed. (See Figure 3-1.)
Step 3 Change the discovery parameters as described in Table 3-1.
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
Discovery Interval | The discovery interval indicates the interval at which CWSI Campus runs the discovery process. The default interval is 30 minutes. You can reduce or increase this interval depending on the size of your network. For a very large network, you might need to increase the interval. |
Polling Interval | After CWSI Campus discovers your devices, the discovery process continues to poll the status of the discovered devices. The default polling interval is 300 seconds (5 minutes), but you can change the frequency of this polling. |
Jump Router Boundaries | By default, discovery extends until it reaches a router. However, you can extend discovery beyond the boundaries set by routers on your network. If you choose to extend the discovery boundaries, you should be cautious about how far you extend them. Discovery could take much longer if you do not selectively choose the boundaries by disabling CDP on devices such as gateways. Also, you can ensure more reliable discovery of remote VTP domains by adding a seed device from them (see the "Selecting a Seed Device" section in Chapter 2, "Preparing for Network Discovery"). |
Seed Device | The discovery seed device is the device from which you start the discovery process. When you installed CWSI Campus, you specified a seed device. Whenever you run the network discovery process, the seed device is used to initiate the discovery process. Step 1 Enter the IP address of the new seed device. Step 2 Click Add to add the seed device to the list. Step 3 Select the newly added seed device. The selected seed device will be used for the next scheduled discovery. If you want to perform an immediate discovery process, from the CWSI Campus map, select View>Rediscover Map. |
Step 4 Click OK to set the interval and close the Properties window.
Step 5 To retain these changes to discovery, select File>Save ANI Properties.
Your network might be divided into multiple VLAN Trunk Protocol (VTP) domains. You can add or remove VTP domains from the discovery process.
For example, if you discovered your entire network when you installed CWSI Campus, you can remove a specific domain from future discoveries.
Step 1 In the CWSI Campus map window, select Options>Properties.
The CWSI - Properties window opens.
Step 2 In the CWSI - Properties window, select the Domains tab. (See Figure 3-2.)
Step 3 Select Discover only these Domain(s) or select Discover all but these Domain(s).
You can only exclude or include domains; you cannot do both. For example, you cannot enter domains A and B to be included and domain C to be excluded. You can either include domains A and B, or exclude domain C.
Step 4 In the Add field, enter the name of the domain to include or exclude.
The CWSI Campus map window will exclude or include the specified domain on its next discovery.
Step 5 To display an updated map immediately, in the CWSI Campus map window, select View>Rediscover Map.
If you have difficulty with the discovery process, refer to the "Working with Discovery" section of Chapter 8, "Troubleshooting". This section provides you with detailed troubleshooting information.
