Collecting Data on LightStream 1010 Switches

Collecting Data on LightStream 1010 Switches

This chapter describes how to use the AtmDirector application to collect data on LightStream 1010 switches.

Data is collected using the ATM-RMON MIB. The RMON tables can be very large, requiring many agent resources to maintain them. For the high-speed and complex collection requirements of ATM-RMON, you should reduce the load on the LightStream 1010 switch. You should only enable data collection when it is required.

Note For routine operations, the data collection feature should be disabled.

You need to collect data to use the following features of the AtmDirector application:

Note The TopN active hosts and clients are determined by calculating the transmit and receive statistics.

The following sections describe how to enable and disable data collection and view the results:

Enabling Data Collection

For the AtmDirector application to collect any statistical data, you must enable data collection. You can enable data collection either for a fabric or for an ATM-VLAN.

To enable the data collection, follow these steps:

Step 1 Start the AtmDirector application from the CWSI Campus Map.

See "Starting the AtmDirector Application" in Chapter 2 for more information.

The AtmDirector main window opens (Figure 2-2).

Step 2 Double-click a fabric name.

The system displays the topology for the selected fabric.

Step 3 Select Tools>Data Collection>Enable.

The AtmDirector application creates the necessary port select groups (PSGs). This application enables data collection on connecting switches of all end hosts and all switches that are components of any participating ATM-VLAN of that fabric. When you enable data collection for a fabric, data collection on all participating ATM-VLANs (in that fabric) is enabled as well.

Setting Up Port Select Groups

A port select group (PSG) is a group of ports on which data collection is enabled. When you enable data collection, the AtmDirector application recognizes the ports that need to be selected as well as the ports that are already set up to collect data, and then creates the necessary PSGs.

Note If a device is already set to collect data, the AtmDirector application disables data collection momentarily before creating new PSGs.

Viewing Enabled Switches

You can view the LightStream 1010 switches that are currently configured with the ATM-RMON client to collect data. The AtmDirector application highlights the enabled switches on the ATM fabric map and the ATM-VLAN map.

To view the enabled switches for a fabric, follow these steps:

Step 1 Start the AtmDirector application from the CWSI Campus Map.

See "Starting the AtmDirector Application" in Chapter 2 for more information.

The AtmDirector main window opens (Figure 2-2).

Step 2 Double-click a fabric name.

The system displays the topology for the selected fabric.

Step 3 Select Tools>Data Collection>Show Enabled Switches.

The AtmDirector application highlights the ATM fabrics that are currently running the ATM-RMON agent and collecting data.

Disabling Data Collection

To disable data collection, follow these steps:

Step 1 Start the AtmDirector application from the CWSI Campus Map.

See "Starting the AtmDirector Application" in Chapter 2 for more information.

The AtmDirector main window opens (Figure 2-2).

Step 2 Double-click a fabric name.

The system displays the topology for the selected fabric.

Step 3 Select Tools>Data Collection>Disable.

The AtmDirector application disables data collection on connecting switches of all end hosts and all switches that are components of any participating ATM-VLAN of that fabric. When you disable data collection for a fabric, data collection on all participating ATM-VLANs is also disabled.

Displaying Graphs of the Collected Data

The AtmDirector application provides graphs based on the data collected by the ATM-RMON agent running on the LightStream 1010 switches.
