Managing Services

Managing Services

You can use the Modem Registrar user interface to define and configure the following service components:


Note  For more information about the service components, see the "Creating and Managing Services" section.

This chapter explains how to configure service types and levels, service classes, and service packages.

Services User Interface Pages

Figure 5-1 shows the hierarchy of the user interface pages used to manage services.

You can use the Manage Services page (see Figure 5-2) to list the services currently configured and to access the interface pages you can use to manage services. For example:

Configuring Service Types

You can use the user interface pages for service types to do the following:

Service types and levels provide the framework for assigning actual DOCSIS option values, which you will do later in the configuration process when you create and modify option sets. For more information, see the defining and managing options sections in "Configuring the Default Option Set" through "Configuring Vendor Option Sets."

Listing Service Types

You can use the Service Type List page (see Figure 5-3) to list the service types currently defined and the service levels associated with each type.

To list the service types and levels currently defined, do the following:

Step 1 Log in to Modem Registrar.

Step 2 On the Main Menu page, click Services.

Step 3 On the Manage Services page, click Service Types. The Service Type List page appears, listing all of the currently defined service types.

Adding Service Types

You can use the Add Service Type page (see Figure 5-4) to define a new service type.

The service types and levels you create provide the framework for assigning actual DOCSIS option values, which you will do later in the configuration process when you create and modify option sets. For more information, see "Configuring the Default Option Set" through "Configuring Vendor Option Sets."

To add a service type, do the following:

Step 1 Log in to Modem Registrar.

Step 2 On the Main Menu page, click Services.

Step 3 On the Manage Services page, click Service Types.

Step 4 On the Service Type List page, click Add Service Type.

Step 5 On the Add Service Type page, enter the name of the new service type in the Service Type Name field. This name must be unique.

For example: min-traffic-rate

Step 6 In the Service Type Description field, enter a description for the new service type. This field is optional.

For example: Minimum traffic rate offerings

Step 7 Click Add Service Type to add the new service type.

Step 8 On the Edit Service Type page, do the following to define a service level for the new service type:

For example: 10 Mbps
For example: Highest bandwidth

Step 9 Click OK to save the information you defined.

Modifying Service Types

You can use the Edit Service Type page (see Figure 5-5) to do the following:

To modify an existing service type, do the following:

Step 1 Log in to Modem Registrar.

Step 2 On the Main Menu page, click Services.

Step 3 On the Manage Services page, click Service Types.

Step 4 On the Service Type List page, locate the name of the service type you want to modify and click its hypertext link.

For example: data-bandwidth

Step 5 On the Edit Service Type page, check the name of the service type displayed below the Navigation Bar to verify that you selected the correct service type.

Step 6 Do the following to modify the service type as desired:

Step 7 If you want to add a new service level, do the following:

For example: 10 Mbps
For example: Highest bandwidth

Step 8 Click OK to save the modifications you made to the fields on this page. The Service Type List page appears.

Deleting Service Types

You can use the Edit Service Type page (see Figure 5-5) to delete a service type.

To delete a service type, do the following:

Step 1 Log in to Modem Registrar.

Step 2 On the Main Menu page, click Services.

Step 3 On the Manage Services page, click Service Types.

Step 4 On the Service Type List page, locate the name of the service type you want to remove and click its hypertext link.

For example: data-bandwidth

Step 5 On the Edit Service Type page, check the name of the service type displayed below the Navigation Bar to verify that you selected the correct service type.

Step 6 Click Delete Service Type to remove the service type. A confirmation message appears asking you if you want to remove the service type. Click Yes or No as appropriate.

Configuring Service Classes

You can use the user interface pages for service classes to do the following:

Listing Service Classes

You can use the Service Class List page (see Figure 5-6) to list the service classes currently defined.

To list the service classes currently defined, do the following:

Step 1 Log in to Modem Registrar.

Step 2 On the Main Menu page, click Services.

Step 3 On the Manage Services page, click Service Classes. The Service Class List page appears, listing all of the currently defined service classes.

Adding Service Classes

You can use the Add Service Class page (see Figure 5-7) to define a new service class.

To add a service class, do the following:

Step 1 Log in to Modem Registrar.

Step 2 On the Main Menu page, click Services.

Step 3 On the Manage Services page, click Service Classes.

Step 4 On the Service Class List page, click Add Service Class.

Step 5 On the Add Service Class page, enter the name of the new service class in the Service Class Name field. This name must be unique.

For example: voice

Step 6 Enter a description for the new service class in the Service Class Description field. This field is optional.

For example: Required types for voice service

Step 7 Click Add Service Class.

Step 8 On the Edit Service Class page assign a service type(s) to the new service class by doing the following:

Step 9 To change the precedence order for a service type, do one of the following:

The Edit Service Class page redisplays, showing the new ordering of the service types.

Step 10 Click OK to save the information you defined. The Service Class List page appears.

Modifying Service Classes

You can use the Edit Service Class page (see Figure 5-8) to do the following:

Existing service packages that are based on a service class that you later modify are unaffected by the changes you make to the service class. If you want an existing service package to use the modified service class, you must delete the service package and recreate it.

To modify an existing service class, do the following:

Step 1 Log in to Modem Registrar.

Step 2 On the Main Menu page, click Services.

Step 3 On the Manage Services page, click Service Classes.

Step 4 On the Service Class List page, locate the name of the service class you want to modify and click its hypertext link.

For example: voice

Step 5 On the Edit Service Class page, check the name of the service class displayed below the Navigation Bar to verify that you selected the correct service class.

Step 6 Modify the service class as desired:

Step 7 To add a new service type, do the following:

Configuring Service Packages

You can use the user interface pages for service packages to do the following:

Listing Service Packages

You can use the Service Package List page (see Figure 5-9) to list the service packages currently defined.

To list the service packages currently defined, do the following:

Step 1 Log in to Modem Registrar.

Step 2 On the Main Menu page, click Services.

Step 3 On the Manage Services page, click Service Packages. The Service Class List page appears, listing all of the currently defined service packages.

Adding Service Packages

You can use the Add Service Package page (see Figure 5-10) to define a new service package.

To add a service package, do the following:

Step 1 Log in to Modem Registrar.

Step 2 On the Main Menu page, click Services.

Step 3 On the Manage Services page, click Service Packages.

Step 4 On the Service Package List page, click Add Service Package.

Step 5 On the Add Service Package page, enter the name of the new service package in Service Package Name field. This name must be unique.

For example: platinum.

Step 6 Enter a description for the new service package in the Service Package Description field. This field is optional.

For example: Deluxe service

Step 7 Select a service class for this service package from the Service Class pull-down list.

For example: Data

Step 8 Click Add Service Package.

Step 9 On the Edit Service Package page, select the radio button for the service level you want to associate with each service type listed. You can select only one level for each service type.

Step 10 Click OK to save the information you defined. The Service Package List page appears.

Modifying Service Packages

You can use the Edit Service Package page (see Figure 5-11) to do the following:

To modify an existing service package, do the following:

Step 1 Log in to Modem Registrar.

Step 2 On the Main Menu page, click Services.

Step 3 On the Manage Services page, click Service Packages.

Step 4 On the Service Package List page, locate the name of the service class you want to modify and click its hypertext link.

For example: platinum

Step 5 On the Edit Service Package page, check the name of the service package displayed below the Navigation Bar to verify that you selected the correct service package.

Step 6 Modify the service package as desired:

Step 7 Click OK to save the information you modified. The Service Package List page appears.

Deleting Service Packages

You can use the Edit Service Package page (see Figure 5-11) to delete a service package.

To delete a service package, do the following:

Step 1 Log in to Modem Registrar.

Step 2 On the Main Menu page, click Services.

Step 3 On the Manage Services page, click Service Packages.

Step 4 On the Service Package List page, locate the name of the service class you want to remove and click its hypertext link.

For example: platinum

Step 5 On the Edit Service Package page, check the name of the service package displayed below the Navigation Bar to verify that you selected the correct service package.

Step 6 Click Delete Service Package to remove the service class. A confirmation message appears asking you if you want to remove the service class. Click Yes or No as appropriate.
