Installing CSRC

Installing CSRC

This chapter describes how to install CSRC (Step 6) and how to verify its installation
(Step 7).

After you install the required software packages for CSRC, you are ready to install the CSRC components. Table 4-1 lists the CSRC software packages included on the CSRC distribution media. You can install each of these packages separately or all at once. You must install the LDAP data package first. You can choose to install the packages on the same system or on different systems. See the "CSRC Installation Worksheet" (Table 2-1).

.
Table 4-1: CSRC Software Packages
Description Contents

LDAP data

The components that provide CSRC LDAP schema and initial data. You must install this package on the same host as the LDAP server to provide CSRC LDAP schema and sample data.

CNR integration

The components that enable the Cisco Network Registrar's TFTP server to interoperate with CSRC and to dynamically generate DOCSIS configuration files. You must install this package on the system on which the Cisco Network Registrar servers are installed. If, however, DNS is supported on a different host than DHCP, CNR integration is not required on the host supporting DNS.

Web user interface

The components that provide the Web-based user interface to CSRC. You must install this package on the system on which the Netscape Application Server and Web server are running.

Utilities

The components that provide CSRC command-line utilities (for example, csrc_dbtool).

This chapter describes how to install the CSRC software packages, verify the installation, and references "Configuring Your Network for CSRC" for information about how to integrate CSRC into your cable network.

Using the "CSRC Installation Worksheet" for CSRC

The CSRC installer requires you to enter values that pertain to the installation of a previously installed required component (for example, the LDAP administrator password entered during the directory server installation). To ensure that you enter consistent values, refer to the appropriate boxes on the "CSRC Installation Worksheet" (see Table 2-1) as you answer the CSRC installer's questions.

As you install CSRC, be sure to indicate the root distinguished name for CSRC data on the "CSRC Installation Worksheet" (box 20). This is the path in the directory server's hierarchy where CSRC data will be stored. The default is o=NetscapeRoot.

Before You Begin Installing CSRC

Before you begin installing the CSRC software packages, you must confirm that the Netscape Application Server (NAS) can start without loading errors. Perform these steps:

The Netscape Directory Server (NDS) server must be running for the LDAP data software package to install correctly. To confirm that the server is running, see the NDS documentation.

Step 1 On the Windows NT taskbar, select the following menu sequence:

    Start>Settings>Control Panel>Services

Step 2 Highlight NAS and double-click Startup.

Step 3 When the NAS dialog box appears, click Allow services to interact with the desktop.

DOS session windows appear the next time NAS is restarted, showing the output of each NAS process as it starts. Examine the KJS window and verify that the CCSRCMWDev extension loaded without error. (Ignore socket error messages.)

Step 4 When you have confirmed that NAS can be started without errors, repeat the preceding process to disable the NAS windows on the desktop the next time the machine is rebooted.

Step 5 Make sure NAS is running before beginning the CSRC installation.

Step 6---Install CSRC

The CSRC installer installs the CSRC software components. During installation, the CSRC installer asks you to provide certain configuration parameters that you specified when you installed the third-party software packages. To provide consistent parameter values, refer to the appropriate boxes on the "CSRC Installation Worksheet" (see Table 2-1), as indicated in the following CSRC installation steps.

Invoking the Install Program

You can either install CSRC from a CD-ROM or from an electronic distribution, as described in the following sections.

Using the CD-ROM:

Step 1 Insert the CSRC CD-ROM into the drive and start the CSRC installer by doing one of the following:

Step 2 Under the CSRC\NT directory, double-click setup.exe, click OK, and proceed to the "Completing the CSRC Installation" section.

Using the Electronic Distribution Image:

Step 1 The self-extracting archive file csrc_1_0_1-nt.exe prompts for a directory to install the installation files. The default is C:\TEMP.

Step 2 Click Start>Run.

Step 3 Click Browse and navigate to the C:\TEMP\csrc_1_0_1 directory.

Step 4 Double-click setup.exe and proceed to the "Completing the CSRC Installation" section.

Completing the CSRC Installation

Note Some of the prompts and screens described in this section do not appear if you have already responded to them for an earlier installation. Others only appear when you are installing certain packages.

To complete the CSRC installation after you execute setup.exe, follow these steps:

Step 1 Click Next to proceed beyond the Welcome screen.

If some components of CSRC are already installed, a dialog box appears listing the currently installed version and offering these options:

Step 2 The Choose Destination Location screen appears. Either select the default destination folder or click Browse to select another location.
Click Next.

Step 3 The Select Components screen displays a list of packages available for installation. Click the name of the package to display its description or click the box to the left of the component name to deselect it. For more information about these packages, see "CSRC Software Packages" (Table 4-1).

You must select at least one component for installation. If you are upgrading some components, but not LDAP data, a dialog box reminds you that you must upgrade LDAP data before any others.

After you have made your selections, click Next to continue.

Step 4 Enter the license key provided with your installation media. The default, if any, represents your previous license key. If you do not specify a key, a thirty-day evaluation license key is installed.

Step 5 When the Enter Perl directory screen appears, select the directory containing the Perl 5.00503 executable file (box 1), such as C:\Perl\bin.
Click Next.

Step 6 Enter the full path of the directory in which you installed the Netscape Application Server (box 17). The default is typically C:\nas21 (if it exists).
Click Next.

Step 7 Enter the full path of the directory in which you installed the LDAP directory server (box 11). The default is typically C:\Netscape\Server4 (if it exists).

Step 8 Enter the name of the host on which the LDAP server is installed (box 12). The default is the value in the Hostname parameter of the NT registry key:

        HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters

Click Next.

Step 9 Enter the LDAP server host name, the unique identifier for the LDAP server (box 13). The default is the LDAP server host name with its domain removed, if the corresponding server directory exists.
Click Next.

Step 10 Enter the port number on which the LDAP server listens for queries (box 14). The default is the value of the port parameter in the LDAP-server-root\slapd-identifier\config\slapd.conf file, if it exists. Otherwise, there is no default.
Click Next.

Step 11 Enter the CSRC Root DN, the distinguished name of the LDAP database node, under which the CSRC data should be stored (box 20). The default is o=NetscapeRoot.

You must include the substring o=. For example:

    ou=yourcompany.com,o=yourcompany.com

Click Next to continue.

Step 12 Enter the LDAP server administrator ID for the LDAP directory server
(box 15) on the
"CSRC Installation Worksheet"). The default is admin.
Click Next.

Step 13 Enter the LDAP administrator password (box 16) and then enter it again to confirm it.

If the LDAP data component is currently being installed or was previously installed on the same machine, the installer checks for pre-existing CSRC data in the LDAP database. If it finds it, it determines whether or not the pre-existing data is compatible with the CSRC version being installed.

Click Next.

Step 14 Enter the CNR hostname, the name of the host on which the Cisco Network Registrar servers are installed (box 2). This is the host on which the TFTP server is running. The default is the name of the current host (the host on which you are running the installation).
Click Next.

Step 15 Enter the CNR administrator username, the username for the Cisco Network Registrar administrator who has access to the Cisco Network Registrar database (box 3). The default is admin.
Click Next.

Step 16 Enter the CNR administrator password, the Cisco Network Registrar password for the administrator you specified in the previous step (box 4 on the "CSRC Installation Worksheet"), and then enter the password again to confirm it.
Click Next.

Step 17 The Start copying files screen appears, asking you to confirm the information displayed in the Current Settings scroll box.

The installer does the following:

If the installer fails to perform a step, it aborts. It does not remove the files previously copied from the distribution media to the target directory.

After all of the components are installed, one of two Setup Complete screens appears:

Using the Time of Day Server

CSRC requires a time server that broadband modems can contact to determine the current time. Windows NT does not have a time server built into it.

To determine whether a host has a time server, type telnet hostname 37 from the DOS prompt of a Windows NT machine. If you see a Connect Failed! message, the machine is not running a time server. If you see a Connection to host lost message, the machine is running a time server.

There must be a host on the network running a time server. This host must be accessible to the broadband modems that CSRC can provision. If you want to use a host running Windows NT as your time server, you must install the Time of Day server provided in the Utilities package.

This section explains how to run the Time of Day Server as an NT service, after you have installed it to the c:\Program Files\CSRC directory. It also tells how to stop the service.

Installing the Time of Day Server as an NT Service

To install the Time of Day Server as an NT service, follow these steps:

Step 1 Open a DOS window.

Step 2 Type the following command:

    "C:\Program Files\CSRC\bin\csrctime" /i

Starting the Time of Day Server Service

Step 1 To start the server, select Start>Control Panel>Services.

Step 2 Highlight Time Server and click Start.

Note You can also start the Time of Day Service by restarting Windows NT.

Uninstalling the Time of Day Server Service

To uninstall the Time of Day Server as an NT service, follow these steps:

Step 1 Open a DOS window.

Step 2 Type the following command:

    "C:\Program Files\CSRC\bin\csrctime" /u

Note Before uninstalling CSRC components, you must stop the Time of Day server. Otherwise Windows NT application errors will appear whenever Windows NT starts.
