Determining the Modem's MAC Address

When you register a subscriber, you must enter the MAC address of the subscriber's modem. How you determine this address depends on your company's policy about modems. The following are some sample approaches:

In all cases there is no automatic way for you to learn the modem's MAC address; it must be physically entered. The modem's MAC address is unlike the computer's MAC address, which you can learn by having subscribers run the ipconfig command on their PC and read back the MAC address).

Confirming Addition of a Subscriber

When you click Add Subscriber from the Add Subscriber page, User Registrar displays the Confirm Addition of Subscriber page (Figure 3-10). The page displays a summary of the new subscriber information and allows you to confirm the addition of a subscriber, or return to the original subscriber page.

This page allows you to specify the User Registrar defaults for the SNMP community string, the name of the unprovisioned service, the default locale, and the default neighborhood.

Both Modem Registrar and User Registrar need to know the modem's community strings. Because User Registrar acts as an SNMP manager when it attempts to reset a modem through SNMP, it needs to know what community strings to use. For more information about SNMP, see "SNMP MIB."

Specifying the Default Subscriber Locale

User Registrar uses the default subscriber locale when the site has more than one locale, but none has been specified for the subscriber, nor is there an entry in the lLocaleLookup class.

For more information about the lLocaleLookup class, see the "Locale Lookup" section.

Specifying the Default Neighborhood

User Registrar displays a drop-down list with the first choice as <none>, since this specification is optional. After you select a default neighborhood, the page defaults to this setting.

The following are some examples:

The Neighborhood settings determine the auto-provisioning behavior under User Registrar Subscriber for modems, subscribers, and computers. Through the Add and Edit Subscriber pages, the User Registrar administrator can override the neighborhood shared or private settings for an individual subscriber.

For example, if the neighborhood default is shared, the User Registrar administrator can override by changing the subscriber's modem usage to private or by removing the subscriber from the neighborhood. For more information about these procedures, see the "Overriding the Modem's Default Provisioning Mode" section.
