Installing a Previous Release

Installing a Previous Release

This appendix contains instructions for preserving your database and for downgrading to a previous release of Network Registrar.

Saving Your Database on Solaris

Before performing the downgrade, login as superuser and do the following:

Step 1 Shutdown the Network Registrar servers:

/etc/init.d/aicservagt stop

Step 2 Make a copy of Network Registrar's database:

/opt/nwreg2/usrbin/mcdshadow

Step 3 Specify a valid Network Registrar administrator username and password when prompted.

Step 4 Copy the directory /var/nwreg2/data/db.bak into some other directory:

cp -R /var/nwreg2/data/db.bak /var/tmp/NR-db-YYMMDD

Step 5 Protect the copy of the database from unauthorized access by making it accessible only to the superuser:

chmod -R go-rwx /var/tmp/NR-db-YYMMDD

Step 6 When you are sure that you will not need to downgrade to the previous release, delete the copy of the database.

Saving Your Database on Windows NT

Before performing the downgrade, login as the Windows NT Administrator and do the following:

Step 1 Shutdown the Network Registrar servers:

Step 2 Make a copy of the database:

\Program Files\Network Registrar\bin\mcdshadow

If you type this command from the command line, put the entire command in quotes; alternatively, you can double-click on it from the desktop.

Step 3 Specify a valid Network Registrar administrator username and password when prompted.

Step 4 Copy the folder \Program Files\Network Registrar\data\db.bak into some other directory that is not in the \Program Files\Network Registrar tree. For example, you might copy it to \Temp\NR-db-YYMMDD, replacing YYMMDD with the current date.

Step 5 Protect the copy of the database from unauthorized access by making it accessible only to the superuser:

Note You can only edit the permissions of a directory that resides on a NTFS partition. You cannot restrict access for files and directories on FAT partitions.

Step 6 When you are sure that you will not need to downgrade to the previous release, delete the database copy.

Downgrading to a Previous Release

The following directions describe how to downgrade to a previous release of Network Registrar. To downgrade to a previously installed version of Network Registrar, you must have saved a copy of the previous release's database.

Note Downgrading to the previously installed release of Network Registrar does not preserve any information added to the database since the new Network Registrar release was installed.

Downgrading to the Previous Release on Solaris

To downgrade to the previously released version of Network Registrar on Solaris, do the following:

Step 1 Uninstall the new version Network Registrar:

pkgrm nwreg2

Step 2 Reinstall the previous version of the product.

Follow the installation instructions that came with the release.

Step 3 Shut down the Network Registrar servers:

/etc/init.d/aicservagt stop

Step 4 Change to the database directory:

cd /var/nwreg2/data/db

Step 5 Copy the database file you made before upgrading:

cp /var/tmp/NR-db-YYMMDD/* /var/nwreg2/data/db

Step 6 Rebuild the key files:

/opt/nwreg2/bin/keybuild mcddb

The rebuild process may take several minutes.

Step 7 As a safety check, run the dbcheck command to verify the integrity of the database:

/opt/nwreg2/bin/dbcheck mcddb

Note You must be root to run this command.

Step 8 Restart the Network Registrar servers:

/etc/init.d/aicservagt start

Step 9 After you are sure that the reinstalled previous version of Network Registrar is functioning as expected, delete the database copy you saved before upgrading.

If you later decide to upgrade to the new version again, save a new copy of the database to retain the ability to downgrade.
