About This Guide

This section describes who should read this guide, how it is organized, and the document conventions in Getting Started with Network Registrar.

Cisco documentation and additional literature are available in a CD-ROM package, which ships with your product. The Documentation CD-ROM, a member of the Cisco Connection Family, is updated monthly. Therefore, it might be more up-to-date than printed documentation. To order additional copies of the Documentation CD-ROM, contact your local sales representative or call customer service. This guide is designed for network managers who are responsible for IP address management. The network manager should be familiar with the following topics:

• Basic concepts and terminology used in internetworking

• Network topology and protocols

How This Guide Is Organized

This guide describes how to use Network Registrar to administer network addresses, and become familiar with Network Registrar features. The major sections of this guide are as follows:

Chapter 1	Installing Network Registrar	Describes the key features of the Network Registrar application, defines Network Registrar system requirements, and explains how to install, upgrade, start, and exit the application.
Chapter 2	Configuring Network Registrar	Describes how to configure DNS and DHCP servers.
Appendix A	Network Registrar Information	Describes Network Registrar files, ncmd error messages, and commands.
Appendix B	Installing a Previous Release	Describes how to plan for a DHCP rollback, manually upgrade your database, and uninstall previous software releases of Network Registrar.

Document Conventions

Network management interfaces use the following conventions:

• Command paths in a GUI are indicated as follows: Tools>VC List >All Connections

• NT systems use a two-button mouse. To drag and drop using an NT system, press and hold down the left mouse button on the icon you want to drag, drag it to the target, and release it to drop the icon on the target.

• UNIX systems use a three-button mouse. To drag and drop using a UNIX system, press and hold down the middle mouse button on the icon you want to drag, drag it to the target, and release it to drop the icon on the target.

• Screen displays may differ slightly from those included in this guide depending on the window system you are using. For example, Windows NT screens are different from HP OpenView screens.

Tips Indicates the following information will help you solve a problem. The tips informaton might not be troubleshooting or even an action, but could be useful information, similar to a Timesaver.

Caution Means reader be careful. In this situation, you might do something that could result in equipment damage or loss of data.

TimeSaver Means the described action saves time. You can save time by performing the action described in the paragraph.
