Configuring Your Client System

Configuring Your Client System


To configure a client system for use with RME, follow the steps detailed in this chapter. RME requires either the Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer browser. Refer to the product release notes for supported browser version numbers.

Before You Begin

For best results, set the display to use small fonts on Microsoft Windows systems Complete the following steps:

Step 1 Select Start > Settings > Control Panel.

Step 2 Double-click the Display icon.

Step 3 Click the Settings tab. If "Small Fonts" is selected in the the Font Size list, your display font is set correctly.

Step 4 Select Small Fonts from the Font Size list, then click Apply. The System Settings Change dialog box appears.

Step 5 Click Yes to restart your system to restart Windows using the small font display.

Configuring Your Web Browser for RME

To configure your web browser for RME, use the procedures described in the following sections:

Enabling Java and JavaScript

To enable Java and Javascript in Netscape Navigator, complete the following steps:

Step 1 Select Edit > Preferences > Advanced.

Step 2 Select the Enable Java and Enable JavaScript check boxes, then click OK.

To enable Java and Javascript in Microsoft Internet Explorer, complete the following steps:

Step 1 Select View > Internet Options > Advanced.

Step 2 Select the three checkboxes under the Java VM heading (Java console enabled, Java JIT compiler enabled, and Java logging enabled); then click Apply.

Setting Your Cache

To set up cache in either Netscape Navigator for optimum performance, complete the following steps:

Step 1 Select Edit > Preferences >Advanced> Cache.

Step 2 For optimum performance, set your memory and disk cache sizes to a minimum of 4096 KB, then click OK.

To set up cache in Microsoft Internet Explorer for optimum performance, complete the following steps:

Step 1 Select View > Internet Options > General.

Step 2 Click Settings.

Step 3 Set the cache size to a percentage of total disk space. Compute the desired percentage, then use the slide bar to select the cache size. For example, if you have a 1-GB disk, you would set the slide bar to .4% in order to get 4 MB
(4096 KB). The slide bar does not go below 1%; select 1% if your total disk space is greater than 1 GB.

Step 4 Click OK in the Settings dialog box.

Step 5 Click OK in the General tab.

Accepting All Cookies

To setup Netscape Navigator to accept all cookies, complete the following steps:

Step 1 Select Edit > Preferences > Advanced.

Step 2 Select the Accept all cookies radio button; then click OK.

To setup Microsoft Internet Explorer to accept all cookies, complete the following steps:

Step 1 Select View > Internet Options > Advanced.

Step 2 Double-click the Security icon to display the items it contains, if they are not already displayed.

Step 3 Double-click the Cookies icon to display the items it contains, if they are not already displayed.

Step 4 Select the Always accept cookies radio button; then click Apply.

Comparing Pages Against Cached Versions

To instruct Netscape Navigator to compare the current page against a cached version, complete the following steps:

Step 1 Select Edit > Preferences > Advanced > Cache.

Step 2 Select the Every Time radio button; then click OK.

To instruct Microsoft Internet Explorer to compare the current page against a cached version, complete the following steps:

Step 1 Select View > Internet Options > General.

Step 2 Click Settings.

Step 3 Select the Every visit to the page radio button; then click OK.

Setting Internet Explorer Security Level

Do the following to setup the security level in Internet Explorer.

Step 1 To set the security level to medium, select View > Internet Options > Security.

Step 2 Select the Medium (more secure) radio button; then click Apply.

Changing Fonts for Readability

The default font type for most web browsers is a serif font such as Times or Times New Roman. You might find this harder to read online than a sans serif font such as Helvetica, Arial, or another popular type.

One of the first things you can do when setting up your browser is to change the font type to sans serif.

To change the font type in Netscape Navigator, complete the following steps:

Step 1 Select Edit > Preferences.

Step 2 Under Category, click Appearance > Fonts.

Step 3 Select a sans serif font from the list; then click OK. The text in the screen is redrawn using the new font.

To change the font type in Microsoft Internet Explorer, complete the following steps:

Step 1 Select View > Internet Options > General.

Step 2 Click Fonts....

Step 3 Select a sans-serif font from the Proportional Font list; then click OK.

Step 4 Click OK in the General tab. The text in the screen is redrawn using the new font.

Enabling Style Sheets

Style sheets describe how authors present web pages on the screen. By attaching style sheets to HTML pages, authors can influence the presentation of the pages without sacrificing device independence or adding new HTML tags.


Note As style sheets gain wider acceptance and are incorporated into both Netscape and Internet Explorer, you will see them used more frequently to implement page styles.

To enable style sheets in Netscape Navigator, complete the following steps:

Step 1 Select Edit > Preferences. The Preferences dialog box appears.

Step 2 Select Advanced, then select the Enable Style Sheets checkbox.

Step 3 Click OK.

To enable style sheets in Microsoft Internet Explorer, complete the following steps:

Step 1 Select View > Internet Options > General.

Step 2 Click Accessibility.

Step 3 Ensure that the Format documents using my style sheet checkbox is not selected; then click OK.

Step 4 Click OK in the General tab.
