Catalyst 6000 Family Inline-Power Field-Upgrade Module Installation Note

Catalyst 6000 Family Inline-Power Field-Upgrade Module Installation Note

Product Number: WS-F6K-VPWR

This publication describes how to install and verify the operation of the Catalyst 6000 family inline-power field-upgrade module (WS-F6K-VPWR) on a WS-X6348-RJ45 10/100 BaseT Ethernet switching module.

Contents

This publication consists of these sections:

Note For translations of the warnings in this publication, see the "Translated Safety Warnings" section.

Features

The inline-power field-upgrade module features are listed inTable 1:

Table 1: Inline-Power Field-Upgrade Module Features
Feature Description

Port inline power

Provides inline power on all ports of the 10/100BaseT Ethernet switching module.

Voltages

48 VDC is provided over Category 5 UTP cable up to 328 feet (100 meters).

Phone discovery

The Catalyst 6000 family switch automatically detects the presence of an IP phone and supplies inline power.

Auxiliary VLAN via IEEE 802.1Q

The Catalyst 6000 family switch automatically segments phones and data endpoints into separate logical networks.

Hot Swapping

Hot swapping lets you remove and replace the 48-port Ethernet switching module while the system is operating. When the system detects that a module has been installed or removed, it automatically runs diagnostic and discovery routines, acknowledges the presence or absence of the module, and resumes system operation without any user intervention.

Power Management

Because the Catalyst 6000 family modules have different power requirements, certain switch configurations require more power than a single power supply can provide. Although the power management feature allows you to power all installed modules with two power supplies, redundancy is not supported in this configuration.

For detailed information on power management, refer to the Catalyst 6000 Family Software Configuration Guide.

Environmental Monitoring

Environmental monitoring of chassis components provides early warning indications of possible component failure to ensure safe and reliable system operation and avoid network interruptions.

For detailed information on environmental monitoring, refer to the Catalyst 6000 Family Software Configuration Guide.

Specifications

Safety Overview

Safety warnings appear throughout this publication in procedures that may harm you if performed incorrectly. A warning symbol precedes each warning statement.

Warning This warning symbol means danger. You are in a situation that could cause bodily injury. Before you work on any equipment, be aware of the hazards involved with electrical circuitry and be familiar with standard practices for preventing accidents. To see translations of the warnings that appear in this publication, refer to the "Translated Safety Warnings" section in this document.

Warning Before you install, operate, or service the system, read the Site Preparation and Safety Guide. This guide contains important safety information you should know before working with the system.

Installing the Inline-Power Field-Upgrade Module

The section is divided into the following topics.

Warning Only trained and qualified personnel should be allowed to install, replace, or service this equipment.

Required Tools

These tools are required to install switching modules in the Catalyst 6000 family switches:

Removing the 10/100 BaseT Ethernet Module

Warning During this procedure, wear grounding wrist straps to avoid ESD damage to the card. Do not directly touch the backplane with your hand or any metal tool, or you could shock yourself.

Caution To prevent ESD damage, handle switching modules by the carrier edges only.

To remove a switching module from a Catalyst 6000 family switch, perform these steps:

Step 1 Disconnect any network interface cables attached to the ports on the switching module you intend to remove.

Step 2 Loosen the two captive installation screws, as shown in Figure 2.

Step 3 Grasp the left and right ejector levers and simultaneously pivot the levers outward to release the switching module from the backplane connector. Figure 2 shows a close-up of the right ejector lever.

Figure 2: Removing the 48-port 10/100 BaseT Ethernet Switching Module

Step 4 Grasp the switching-module front panel with one hand and place your other hand under the carrier to support and guide it out of the slot. Do not touch the printed circuit boards or connector pins.

Step 5 Carefully pull the switching module straight out of the slot, keeping your other hand under the carrier to guide it.

Step 6 Place the switching module on an antistatic mat or antistatic foam work surface.

Installing the Inline-Power Field-Upgrade Module

To install the inline-power field-upgrade module on the Ethernet switching module, perform these steps:

Step 1 Using a Phillips screwdriver, carefully remove the 11 screws from the module and replace them with the standoffs supplied with the inline-power field-upgrade module. Do not overtighten standoffs.

Note When removing the screws and installing the standoffs, be careful not to damage adjacent components.

Step 2 Remove the inline-power field-upgrade module from its protective packaging.

Step 3 Position the inline-power field-upgrade module over the Ethernet switching module standoffs as shown in Figure 3.

Step 4 Carefully press down on the edges of the inline-power field-upgrade module to seat the module connectors to the Ethernet switching module conectors.

Figure 3: Positioning the Inline-Power Field-Upgrade Module over the Switching Module

Step 5 Install the 11 screws and carefully and evenly tighten the screws as shown in Figure 4. Do not overtighten the screws or you could damage the inline-power field-upgrade module.

Figure 4: Installing the Mounting Screws

Installing the 10/100 BaseT Ethernet Switching Module

To install the Ethernet switching module into the Catalyst 6000 family switch, perform these steps:

Step 1 Guide the switching module into the slot, aligning the edges of the switching module with the guides in the chassis slot (see Figure 5). Avoid touching the components on the board.

Figure 5: Installing the 48-Port Ethernet Switching Module in the Chassis

Step 2 Pivot both ejector levers out fully so that they are ready to engage the chassis slot.

Step 3 While keeping the module level, carefully slide the Ethernet switching module into the slot (see Figure 5) until the module ejector levers engage the chassis slot and begin to pivot.

Step 4 Using the thumb and forefinger of each hand, simultaneously push the left lever and the right lever in to seat the module completely into the backplane connector.

Caution Always use the ejector levers when installing or removing modules. A module that is partially seated in the backplane causes the system to halt.

Step 5 Use a screwdriver to tighten the captive installation screws on the left and right sides of the module (see Figure 2).

Configuring the Module

Refer to the Catalyst 6000 Family Software Configuration Guide for information on configuring a voice-over-IP (VoIP) network.
