Configuring Routing on the RSM

Configuring Routing on the RSM

This chapter describes how to configure the Route Switch Module (RSM), which provides routing support for the Catalyst  5000 series switches. The RSM is a router module, based on the Cisco Route/Switch Processor 2 (RSP2), that runs Cisco IOS software.

This chapter consists of these sections:

Accessing the RSM

To access an RSM installed in a Catalyst  5000 series switch, enter the session  mod_num command at the Console> prompt. The switch responds with the Enter Password prompt. Enter the password for the RSM. The RSM responds with the Router> prompt. At this point, you are in user EXEC command mode, and you have direct access only to the RSM with which you have established a session.

This example shows how to open a session on an RSM:

Console> session mod_num
Console> Enter Password: <password>
Router>

Configuring the RSM

For complete detailed hardware installation and software configuration procedures for the RSM, refer to the Catalyst 5000 Series Route Switch Module Installation and Configuration Note.

For information on Cisco IOS commands, refer to the Configuration Fundamentals Command Reference publication. For information on the Catalyst  5000 series switch commands, including the RSM commands, refer to the Catalyst  5000 Series Command Reference publication.

The RSM has an optional Versatile Interface Processor 2 (VIP2) module that allows the RSM to emulate a Cisco 7500 series router. For information on installing and configuring the VIP2 module, refer to the Catalyst 5000 Series VIP2-15 and VIP2-40 Installation and Configuration Note.
