This section discusses the objectives, intended audience, and organization of the Catalyst 5000 Series Switch Message and Recovery Guide, and defines the conventions used to convey instructions and information.
Cisco documentation and additional literature are available in a CD-ROM package, which ships with your product. The Documentation CD-ROM, a member of the Cisco Connection Family, is updated monthly. Therefore, it might be more up to date than printed documentation. To order additional copies of the documentation CD-ROM, contact your local sales representative or call customer service. The CD-ROM package is available as a single package or as an annual subscription. You can also access Cisco documentation on the World Wide Web URL http://www.cisco.com, http://www-china.cisco.com, or http://www-europe.cisco.com.
This guide lists and describes error messages for the Catalyst 5000 series switches. The system software sends these error messages to the console (and optionally, to a logging server on another system) during operation. Not all system error messages indicate problems with your system. Some are purely informational, while others may help diagnose problems with communications lines, internal hardware, or the system software.
The error messages are listed according to the particular facility (hardware device, protocol, or a module or system software) that produces the messages. The facility sections appear in alphabetical order; within each system facility section, messages are listed alphabetically by message name. Each error message is followed by an explanation and a recommended action. Error messages appear only when the system remains operational.
This guide is designed for the installer and user with a working knowledge of the Catalyst 5000 series switch system software. Users of this guide might also include network administrators and other people responsible for setting up and maintaining the Catalyst Stack.
