Release Notes for Catalyst 5000 Series Network Analysis Module Software Release 4.x
Current Release (March 30, 1999)
4.5(1)
Previous Release 4.3(1a)
These release notes describe the guidelines and caveats for Catalyst 5000 series Network Analysis Module software release 4.x and all 4.x maintenance releases. The current 4.x release is Network Analysis Module software release 4.5(1).
Note Although the software image in a new Network Analysis Module operates correctly, later software images containing the latest upgrades and modifications are released regularly to provide you with the most optimized software available. We strongly recommend that you check for the latest released software images at the World Wide Web locations listed in the "Cisco Connection Online" section.
Note Release notes for prior Network Analysis Module software releases were accurate at the time of release. However, for information on the latest caveats and updates to previously released Network Analysis Module software releases, refer to the release notes for the latest maintenance release in your software release train. You can access all Catalyst 5000 series release notes at the World Wide Web locations listed in the "Cisco Connection Online" section.
This document consists of these sections:
Table 1 lists the software versions and applicable ordering information for the Catalyst 5000 series Network Analysis Module software.
This section describes guidelines, restrictions, warnings, and cautions about using Catalyst 5000 series Network Analysis Module software release 4.x.
- If your SPAN source has more than 100 active VLANs, roving may fail occasionally with the default TrafficDirector retry and timeout values. If this occurs, increase the values.
- Before using TrafficDirector 5.3 with the NetWork Analysis Module, be thoroughly familiar with the TrafficDirector 5.3 and Network Analysis Module Configuration Note.
Note Select the NAMprop file from the Agent Edit window, not from the Switch Edit window.
- Do not install a Network Analysis Module in a Catalyst 5000 series switch equipped with Supervisor Engine I.
- If the TrafficDirector application displays a message that it "can't communicate with Agent," then, in the Configuration Manager-Agent-Edit window, increase Retries to 6 and Timeout to 20.
- In the TrafficDirector application Property Editor---Edit Domain dialog box, do not enable Hosts or Conversations for IPV6 or NET~.
- When the SPAN source is a VLAN or the NetFlow Monitor interface is ifIndex.3000, installation of a property file with RMON Stats enabled fails.
- The default NAMprop.asd file doesn't include the RMON domain.
- If you add the RMON domain when the SPAN source is a VLAN or the NetFlow Monitor interface is ifindex.3000, disable History.
- To run "TopN Talkers", "All Talkers," or "All Convs" in the TrafficDirector application's "Traffic" screen, add the RMON domain to the property file with Hosts and Conversations enabled and then install it on the Network Analysis Module.
- When the SPAN source is a port, if you add the RMON domain to the NAMprop.asd file with RMON Stats disabled and install the property file to the NAM, etherStats are disabled on that port until you reinstall the RMON domain on that port with RMON Stats enabled.
These sections describe open and resolved caveats in Network Analysis Module software release 4.5(1):
This section describes open caveats in software release 4.5(1).
- The Network Analysis Module supports ifindex values of 3000 or less. Use the show port command to display the ifindex of a port. Ifindex values increase as modules are added and removed from a switch, which may leave lower ifindex values unused. To put unused lower ifindex values back into service, enter the clear config all command, which will reinitialize the sequence of ifindex values. (CSCdk54956)
 | Caution
The clear config all command erases all configuration data from NVRAM for all modules. Before using the clear config all command, save a backup of the configuration.
|
- Do not use the fw45prop.asd file with the Network Analysis Module. The Network Analysis Module does not support the NFS_T and NFS_U protocols, which are both in the fw45prop.asd file. (CSCdm14257, CSCdm14405)
- Occasionally, using TrafficDirector's Data Capture feature corrupts the data capture filter parameters in NVRAM. If the parameters in NVRAM are corrupt, changing the SPAN configuration or entering set snmp extendedrmon enable or set snmp extendedrmon disable commands causes the Network Analysis Module to reset continuously, displaying "module removed" and "module inserted" messages on the supervisor engine console. If this occurs, enter a set span disable command, which prevents the Network Analysis Module from reading the corrupt data in NVRAM and allows it to reset successfully. Enter a clear configure extendedrmon command to delete the corrupted parameters from NVRAM and then reconfigure SPAN and the Network Analysis Module. (CSCdm19484)
This section describes caveats resolved in software release 4.5(1):
- With the Network Analysis Module as the SPAN destination and multiple SPAN source ports, configure SPAN with the rx keyword, not with the tx or both keywords. This problem is fixed in software release 4.5(1). (CSCdk65632)
- From TrafficDirector 5.3, when roving to or from a VLAN, if a dialog box appears asking "Do you want to reinitialize the counters for the new roving," wait 5 seconds before responding. This problem is fixed in software release 4.5(1). (CSCdk66419)
- The Network Analysis Module supports either the VLAN Agents option or the NetFlow Data Export option. To avoid a TLB exception on the NetWork Analysis Module, do not enable both options simultaneously. This problem is fixed in software release 4.5(1). (CSCdk68190)
- Disabling the VLAN Agent option when the SPAN/rove source is a VLAN removes the source VLAN from RMON. If this occurs, reselect the SPAN/rove VLAN. This problem is fixed in software release 4.5(1). (CSCdk69372)
This section describes caveats in Catalyst 5000 series Network Analysis Module software release 4.3(1a).
- Modified in software release 4.5(1). The Network Analysis Module supports ifindex values of 2047 or less.
|
- Use the default TrafficDirector settings. Do not edit the default.dvt file on the TrafficDirector workstation. (CSCdk55560)
- This problem is fixed in software release 4.5(1). With the Network Analysis Module as the SPAN destination and multiple SPAN source ports, configure SPAN with the rx keyword, not with the tx or both keywords. (CSCdk65632)
- This problem is fixed in software release 4.5(1). From TrafficDirector 5.3, when roving to or from a VLAN, if a dialog box appears asking "Do you want to reinitialize the counters for the new roving," wait 5 seconds before responding. (CSCdk66419)
- This problem is fixed in software release 4.5(1). The Network Analysis Module supports either the VLAN Agents option or the NetFlow Data Export option. To avoid a TLB exception on the NetWork Analysis Module, do not enable both options simultaneously. (CSCdk68190)
- This problem is fixed in software release 4.5(1). Disabling the VLAN Agent option when the SPAN/rove source is a VLAN removes the source VLAN from RMON. If this occurs, reselect the SPAN/rove VLAN. (CSCdk69372)
