Overview

The Catalyst 2900 series XL Enterprise Edition Software supplies advanced virtual LAN (VLAN) functionality that is in addition to the Catalyst 2900 series XL standard edition software. In this guide, Catalyst 2900 series refers to any of the Catalyst 2900 series XL switches.

The following features make up the Enterprise Edition Software:

This guide documents just the Enterprise Edition Software and is a supplement to the other documents in the Catalyst 2900 series XL documentation set:

Note Enterprise Edition Software features are also documented in the web-based
Cisco Visual Switch Manager Software help system.

Upgrading to Enterprise Edition Software

Catalyst 2900 XL switches can be ordered with the Enterprise Edition Software described in this guide or with the standard edition software. All standard edition features are included in the Enterprise Edition Software. See the Catalyst 2900 Series XL Installation and Configuration Guide for a complete list of the available switches, modules, and software configurations.

You can upgrade to the Enterprise Edition Software by purchasing the Catalyst 2900 Series XL Enterprise Edition Software Upgrade Kit and using a TFTP server or the XMODEM protocol to copy the new image files to your switch. See Chapter 6, "Cisco IOS Management" in the Catalyst 2900 Series XL Installation and Configuration Guide for the upgrade procedures.

Note Although all switches can run the Enterprise Edition Software, some legacy switches cannot be upgraded to run the 11.2(8)SA4
standard edition software. The
Catalyst 2900 Series XL Installation and Configuration Guide lists the devices that cannot run the standard edition software.

Management Options

This guide describes how to implement Enterprise Edition Software features by using the Cisco IOS command-line interface (CLI). Enterprise Edition Software features can also be managed through the following interfaces:

Figure 1-1 shows the VLAN menu on the Visual Switch Manager home page. All Enterprise Edition Software features are available from this menu and are described in the manager software help system.
