You can access all network view features from two pages. The Network View page (Figure 5-1) is a map of the devices and links that make up your network. From this page, you can display information about any of the displayed devices or links, and you can start the manager software for any of the displayed Catalyst 2900 switches.
The Visual Stack page (Figure 5-8) displays live images of Catalyst 2900 switches. From this page, you can reconfigure a port by clicking on it, and you can start the manager software for any switch in the stack.
The following topics describe the network view in greater detail:
Table 5-1 lists the browsers required to run the Cisco Switch Network View application.
| Operating System | Netscape Communicator | Microsoft Internet Explorer |
|---|---|---|
Windows 95 / 98, Service Pack 1 (SP1) | 4.06 or higher | 4.01 Service Pack 1 (SP1) |
Windows NT, (Service Pack 3 recommended) | 4.06 or higher | 4.01 Service Pack 1 (SP1) |
Solaris 2.5.1 or higher, with the SUN recommended patch cluster and Motif library patch 103461-24 available from SUN Microsystems. | 4.06 or higher | - |
Before you begin to work with the network view application, ensure that your environment is configured as described in the section "Accessing Manager Software" in the "Web-Based Management" chapter.
A Catalyst 2900 stack is up to four Catalyst 2900 switches connected to each other and other devices. All the switches must be running Cisco IOS Release 11.2(8)SA3 or later. You can display the stack as icons in a map of the network (see Figure 5-1) or as live images of the switches (see Figure 5-8). A star topology with a primary member at the center ensures that the network view displays the most complete view of devices connected to the stack. If there are more than four Catalyst 2900 switches, those that are not in the stack display as edge devices.
The Network View page can also display Cisco routers, switches, hubs and Micro Webservers, but these devices must be directly attached to a Catalyst 2900 switch. Other devices that run CDP display as generic edge devices.
Follow these steps to display the Network View page:
Step 1 Click Network View on the Switch Manager home page.
Step 2 You are prompted for the enable password for each Catalyst 2900 switch in the stack. Enter the passwords. There is no need to enter a user name. After you have entered all the passwords, you can immediately use the manager software for any stack switch.
On the Network View page (Figure 5-1), devices are represented by colored, labeled icons. By default, device labels show their IP addresses. Click Toggle Labels to replace the IP address with the device type and the port numbers that make up a link.
The cyan-colored icons are Catalyst 2900 stack members. Yellow icons are generic edge devices connected to stack members. Only Catalyst 2900 switches with Cisco Visual Switch Manager Software can be stack members. Click Legend to display the complete list of icons and link indicators (Figure 5-2).
From the Network View page, you can right-click with the mouse on icons and links to display pop-up menus, and you can left-click the buttons listed in Table 5-2.

This section describes how to use the Network View page to retrieve the following information about stack members:
From the Network View page, click Switch Manager to display the list of devices in the stack (Figure 5-3). You can click the IP address for any device to display the manager home page for that device. The page shows each device type, IP address, and the port through which it is connected to the primary stack member.
From the Network View page, you can generate reports about a switch and its ports. This section describes how to display the two items available on the device pop-up menu:
Follow these steps to display the Device Report:
Step 1 Right-click on a stack member icon. The device pop-up menu displays.
Step 2 Select Device Report.
The Device Report displays. Figure 5-4 shows the Device Report with configuration information displayed. The drop-down list in the right corner displays the three versions of the report.
Step 3 Select one of the three options from the drop-down list:
Use the buttons across the top of the page (see Figure 5-6) to do the following:
Figure 5-5 shows the device port information. When you select a port, this report lists the port number, MAC address, status, speed, and duplex mode. When you click List learned addresses, it displays the MAC addresses learned on the port.

Figure 5-6 shows the device system information. It lists the current software version, Flash memory, NVRAM buffer size, and address capacity.
Step 1 Right-click over the link on the Network View page.
Step 2 Select Link Report from the link pop-up menu (see Figure 5-7).
When you select a port, the report displays the port to which that port is connected. When you select a port in a Fast EtherChannel port group, the report also displays the port numbers of other ports in the group. The VLAN field displays the VLANs that the selected port belongs to, and the Network Port field is green if the port has been defined as the network port.
The Link Report also displays the following information:
The Visual Stack is a stack of images of up to four Catalyst 2900 switches (Figure 5-8) in a star topology with the primary switch at the top. This is the same topology that displays in the Network View page with the primary switch in the center. These images display real-time information about the switches and their ports. You can use them to monitor and configure switch ports and use manager software for any of the switches.
Follow these steps to display the Visual Stack page:
Step 1 Display the Network View page as described in the "What Is a Stack?" section.
Step 2 Click Visual Stack in the upper left corner of the page. It can take some seconds for the graphic files to display.
The ports and LEDs on these images show the same colors as the switch LEDs to depict the port status:
For complete descriptions of the switch LEDs, see the section "LEDs" in the "Introduction" chapter.
The visual stack displays the IP address of each switch next to the switch image. Click the IP address to display the manager software home page for that switch. End the browser session when you want to return to the visual stack.
To check the transmission speed settings for all switch ports, click Mode and highlight SPD (speed). Cyan means a port is at 10 Mbps; green means a port is in 100 Mbps.
To check the duplex setting, click Mode and highlight FDUP (full-duplex). Cyan means a port is in half-duplex mode; green means the port is in full-duplex mode.

You can click a port on the Visual Stack page to configure it. The Port Configuration pop-up window (Figure 5-9) shows the port settings and status. Select the enable check box to enable or disable the port, and select from the drop-down lists to set the duplex and speed settings.
For more information on configuring these parameters, see the section "Port Configuration" in the "Web-Based Management" chapter.
