IP Management

With the IP Management page, you can:

Configuring IP

Note: Before you can use CVSM to manage a single device, you must enter the IP address, mask, and default gateway through the management console, BOOTP, or DHCP. If you selected this switch as the command switch in a cluster, you must assign IP information to the switch. The assigned information is displayed in the IP Address, IP Mask, and Default Gateway fields. If this switch is a member switch in a cluster, you can assign IP information, but it is not required.

View or enter IP configuration information in the following fields:

IP Fields Description
IP Address View the IP address or enter a new one. If you enter a new address and click Apply, CVSM loses contact with the switch. You must then enter the new IP address in the browser Location field to reestablish contact with the switch.

Note: If you are displaying IP information for a member switch with an IP address, it is displayed in the IP Address field. If the switch has no IP address assigned, this field contains zeros.

IP Mask View or enter the IP mask for the switch. The mask identifies the bits that denote the network number in an IP address. When the mask denotes a portion of the network, it is referred to as a subnet mask.
Broadcast Enter the IP broadcast address for the switch. The broadcast address is reserved for sending a message to all stations.
Default Gateway View or enter the IP address of the default gateway. The CPU sends traffic to an unknown IP address through the default gateway.
Domain Name Enter one or several domain names. You might need to ask your network administrator for this information.

A domain name identifies an administrative region in an IP network. This name is appended to a host name to identify a particular network device. When network traffic contains no domain name, switch software appends the domain name that you specified; it then adds the complete domain name/host name specification to its host name table. If you specify multiple domain names, switch software creates a domain name/host name combination for each entry and adds them to the host name table.

Note: If you enter multiple domain names, separate names with a comma; do not use spaces in your entry.

Changing the Management VLAN

By default, VLAN 1 is the management VLAN. However, you can designate any VLAN as the management VLAN. Only one management VLAN can be active at a time. To list port membership in VLANs, select VLAN Membership  from the VLAN menu; click Help on that page for more information.

Workstations connected to ports assigned to the management VLAN can establish IP connections to the switch. These connections allow access to CVSM, SNMP, and Telnet.

Caution: When you specify a new management VLAN, your HTTP connection to the old management VLAN is lost. For this reason, you should have a connection between your management station and a port in the new management VLAN, or connect to the new management VLAN through a multi-VLAN router. (See the Cisco IOS Desktop Switching Enterprise Edition Software Configuration Guide for details.)

To change the management VLAN:

  1. Ensure that the port through which you are managing the switch is assigned to the new management VLAN.
To avoid loosing your connection to the new VLAN, use a management station connected to a console port in the new management VLAN; or, connect to the new VLAN through a multi-VLAN or trunk port assigned to both the current and the new management VLAN.
  2. Enter the new VLAN ID in the Management VLAN field.
  3. Click Apply.

You can delete any management VLAN except VLAN 1 by using the CLI.

Note: If you plan to use Cluster Management, links between the command switch, member switches, and candidates must all be part of the same management VLAN.

Configuring DNS Servers

IP networks include servers that implement the domain name system (DNS), which translates host names to IP addresses. You can specify up to six DNS servers to be used by the switch. The IP Management page lets you add and remove DNS servers from this list.

To add a server:

  1. In the DNS Configuration section, enter the IP address of a valid DNS server in the New Server field.
  2. Click <<Add<<.

To remove a server:

  1. In the Current Servers table, select an address.
  2. Click Remove.
