This following sections provide the requirements and procedures for downloading the Enterprise Edition software from:
You can download the upgrade file from a TFTP server to the switch via the network. There must be IP connectivity between the server and the switch.
To perform the steps in this section, you must have a TFTP server and a management station (such as a PC) with a CD-ROM drive. You must also access the switch management console by either:
Follow these steps to download the software from a TFTP server:
1. Insert the Cisco Catalyst 1900/2820 Enterprise Edition Software CD into the CD-ROM drive of the management station.
2. Configure the TFTP root directory on the TFTP server in which to copy the upgrade file.
3. Copy the upgrade file from the CD to the correct directory on the server.
4. Power up the switch and allow it to execute the power-on self-test (POST). For information about POST, refer to the installation and configuration guide that shipped with your switch.
5. Display the switch management console by either:
6. Ensure there is IP connectivity between the switch and the TFTP server. For example, ping the switch from the server.
7. From the Management Console Main Menu, display the Firmware Configuration Menu, select the [S] option, and enter the IP address of the server on which the upgrade file is located.
8. Select the [F] option from the menu, and enter the location of the upgrade file on the server, relative to the TFTP root directory.
9. Select the [T] option from the menu to initiate the TFTP download.
The switch contacts the server to download the upgrade file to the switch.
10. Check the Upgrade status field in the System Information area on the menu to verify the progress of the download.
When the file is validated by the existing firmware and successfully downloads to the switch Flash memory, the new firmware executes immediately. If the upgrade file is invalid, the temporary image is discarded, the existing firmware continues to execute, and the firmware upgrade ends.
After the download, the switch does not respond to commands for approximately 1 minute. When the download is complete, the switch resets and begins using the new software.
You can download the upgrade file from a TFTP client management station to the switch using the put operation from the client management station. There must be IP connectivity between the client management station and the switch.
To perform the steps in this section, you must have a TFTP client management station (such as a PC) with a CD-ROM drive. You must also access the switch management console by either:
Follow these steps to download the software from a TFTP client management station:
1. Insert the Cisco Catalyst 1900/2820 Enterprise Edition Software CD into the CD-ROM drive of the client management station.
2. Copy the upgrade file from the CD to a temporary area on the client management station.
3. Power up the switch and allow it to execute the power-on self-test (POST). For information about POST, refer to the installation and configuration guide that shipped with your switch.
4. Display the switch management console by either:
5. Ensure there is IP connectivity between the switch and the client management station. For example, ping the switch from the client management station.
6. From the client management station, establish a TFTP session with the IP address assigned to the switch.
7. Ensure that the client management station is in binary transfer mode.
8. Download the upgrade file from the client management station to the switch by using the TFTP user interface or the appropriate command for the put operation (such as, put upgrade_filename).
9. From Management Console Main Menu, display the Firmware Configuration Menu, and check the Upgrade status field in the System Information area on the menu to verify the progress of the download.
You can download the upgrade file from a management station to the switch via the XMODEM protocol. The procedure for downloading the software via XMODEM is largely dependent on the modem software you are using.
To perform the steps in this section, you must have the following items:
Follow these steps to download the software via the XMODEM protocol:
1. Insert the Cisco Catalyst 1900/2820 Enterprise Edition Software CD into the CD-ROM drive of the management station.
2. Copy the upgrade file from the CD to a temporary area on the management station.
3. Power up the switch and allow it to execute the power-on self-test (POST). For information about POST, refer to the installation and configuration guide that shipped with your switch.
4. Connect the switch to the management station as described in "Connecting the Switch to a Management Station or Modem" on page 13.
5. Start up your emulation program, and display the management console.
6. From Management Console Main Menu, display the RS-232 Port Configuration Menu, and enter the baud rate (2400, 9600, 19200, 38400, or 57600), data bits, stop bits, and parity settings for the console port on the switch.
Downloading the upgrade file using 57600 baud takes approximately 10 minutes.
7. From the RS-232 Port Configuration Menu, select the [G] option to activate the group settings for the console port.
8. Configure the management station to match the settings of the console port.
9. From Management Console Main Menu, display the Firmware Configuration Menu, and select the [U] option to use the XMODEM protocol to download the upgrade file.
10. At the prompt, select Y to start the download.
You can use the switch diagnostic console if the switch firmware has become corrupted or if you cannot display the management console. For information about using the diagnostic console, refer to the installation and configuration guide that shipped with your switch.
To connect the switch to a management station or dial-up modem, follow these steps:
1. Configure the baud rate and character format of the management station or modem and the console port on the switch so that they match. The following are the default physical characteristics of the console port on the switch: 9600 baud, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity, no flow control.
If you change the settings for the console port on the switch, make sure to select the [G] option on the RS-232 Configuration Menu to activate the settings.
2. Insert one end of the supplied rollover cable into the console port, located on the rear panel of the switch.
3. Attach one of the following supplied adapters to a management station or modem:
4. Insert the other end of the supplied rollover cable into the adapter.
For detailed information about connecting the switch to the management station or modem, refer to the installation and configuration guide that shipped with your switch.
