Checking the Component Installation

This chapter describes procedures for confirming the successful hardware installation of the route processor or interface module, and contains these sections:

Confirming the Installation

Problems with the initial startup are often caused by an interface module or power supply that has become dislodged from the backplane or chassis power connector during shipment. Although over-temperature conditions rarely occur at initial startup, the environmental monitoring functions are included because they also monitor DC line voltages. At the initial system boot, verify the following:

When these conditions are met, the hardware installation is complete. If the startup sequence fails before these conditions are met, use the procedures in this chapter to isolate and, if possible, resolve the problem.

If you are unable to solve a problem, contact a customer service representative for assistance and further instructions. Before you call, gather the following information:

The flowchart in Figure 3-1 helps you determine which component might
have malfunctioned.

Interface Module LEDs

The following sections describe the Catalyst 8540 CSR interface module LEDs.

Eight-port Gigabit Ethernet Interface Module LEDs

Figure 3-2 shows the Catalyst 8540 CSR eight-port Gigabit Ethernet interface module LEDs. Table 3-1 describes them.

LED State Description

Status

Green

The system has passed internal self-tests and diagnostic tests.

Red

The system has failed internal self-tests and diagnostic tests.

Orange

The system is booting or a module is disabled.

Green

The Ethernet port is operational.

Off

No signal is detected on the Ethernet port.

Two-port Gigabit Ethernet Interface Module LEDs

Figure 3-3 shows the Catalyst 8540 CSR two-port Gigabit Ethernet interface module LEDs. Table 3-2 describes them.

Table 3-2:
LED State Description

OPT-DET

On

When an optical signal from another Gigabit Ethernet module is detected, this LED is on. It is steadily on when there is a gigabit connection.

RX-SYNC

On

When there is synchronization of the link negotiation process, this LED is on. It is on steadily when there is a gigabit connection.

TX (Transmit)

Green

When a port is transmitting a packet, this LED is green for approximately 50 ms; otherwise, it is off.

FULL-DUPLEX

On

When the port is operating in full-duplex mode, this LED is on. This is always the case for an operational Gigabit Ethernet port.

LINK

Green

The port is operational (a signal is detected). When no signal is detected, this LED is off.

RX (Receive)

Green

When the port is receiving a packet, the LED is green for approximately 50 ms; otherwise, it is off.

10/100BaseT Interface Module LEDs

Figure 3-4 shows the Catalyst 8540 CSR 10/100BaseT interface module LEDs. Table 3-3 describes them.

Port is operating at 100 Mbps.

Off

Port is operating at 10 Mbps.

LK

Green

Port is operational (a signal is detected).

Off

No signal is detected.

Figure 3-5 shows the Catalyst 8540 CSR 100BaseFX interface module LEDs. Table 3-4 describes these LEDs.

Route Processor and Switch Module LEDs

This section describes the LEDs used to confirm and troubleshoot the operation of the route processor and switch modules. The LEDs on the route processor indicate the status of the processor, the Flash PC Card slots, and the interface ports. Figure 3-6 shows the route processor LEDs. Table 3-5 describes them.

Green

The system has passed internal self-tests and diagnostic tests.

Red

The system has failed internal self-tests and diagnostic tests.

Orange

The system is booting or a module is disabled.

Active

Green

The system is operating.

Red

The system is not operating.

Standby

Green

The system is in Standby mode.

TX (Transmit)

Flashing green

Ethernet packets are being transmitted. The pulse rate increases with the data rate.

RX (Receive)

Flashing green

Ethernet packets are being received. The pulse rate increases with the data rate.

Off

No signal is being received.

Link

Green

The Ethernet port is operational.

Off

No signal is detected on the Ethernet port.

Route Processor LEDs

Figure 3-7 shows the switch module LEDs. Table 3-6 describes them.

Red

Orange

Switch Module LEDs

Troubleshooting Interface Modules

Your interface modules went through extensive testing and burn-in before leaving the factory; however, if your system appears to have problems starting up, use the information in this chapter to help isolate the cause.

When you complete the troubleshooting procedures in this chapter, continue with these interface module troubleshooting steps:
