About This Guide

Document Objectives

Welcome to the Cisco Security Manager Tutorial. This tutorial introduces you to the essential concepts and task flow required to configure and administer Cisco Security Manager. The first chapter presents high-level concepts that help you map between our terminology and terminology with which you may be familiar. It also describes essential concepts to help you complete the installation process and configure your system so that you can deploy network security policies across the Policy Enforcement Points (PEPs) that reside on your network. The remaining chapters present the task flow required to complete the initial configuration of Cisco Security Manager, from the perspective of logging on to a fresh install through pushing the device-specific command sets out to a single PIX Firewall.

Audience

Cisco Security Manager requires a working knowledge of network administration and an understanding of the network(s) on which Cisco Security Manager is about to be deployed. We recommend that you also be familiar with the PIX Firewall(s) that you intend to manage and have an idea about the types of network security policies that you want to implement. This guide is intended for the person who is familiar with these issues and who is ready to configure an installed Cisco Security Manager system.

Cisco Connection Online

Cisco Connection Online (CCO) is Cisco Systems' primary, real-time support channel. Maintenance customers and partners can self-register on CCO to obtain additional information and services.

Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, CCO provides a wealth of standard and value-added services to Cisco's customers and business partners. CCO services include product information, product documentation, software updates, release notes, technical tips, the Bug Navigator, configuration notes, brochures, descriptions of service offerings, and download access to public and authorized files.

CCO serves a wide variety of users through two interfaces that are updated and enhanced simultaneously: a character-based version and a multimedia version that resides on the World Wide Web (WWW). The character-based CCO supports Zmodem, Kermit, Xmodem, FTP, and Internet e-mail, and it is excellent for quick access to information over lower bandwidths. The WWW version of CCO provides richly formatted documents with photographs, figures, graphics, and video, as well as hyperlinks to related information.
