Notes for Upgrading the License for Cisco Secure Policy Manager Version 2.1

June 2000

These upgrade instructions pertain to Cisco Secure Policy Manager when upgrading from the evaluation version to a standard product license.

Contents

Introduction

There are two possible scenarios for upgrading within Cisco Secure Policy Manager. As a user, you may perform one of the following:

This document describes procedures for the latter scenario---upgrading from one license to another within the same product release.

Available Product Licenses

If you downloaded Cisco Secure Policy Manager, an evaluation license is included with the files. This license will expire after 90 days. Using the Update Product License dialog box accessible on the Help menu in the GUI client (the administrative interface for Cisco Secure Policy Manager), you can update the current license of your installed Cisco Secure Policy Manager product. This feature enables you to upgrade to a permanent product license.

The following permanent product licenses are available for Cisco Secure Policy Manager:

SEC-POL-MGR-LITE

This license supports management of 3 devices.

SEC-POL-MGR-2.0

This license supports management of an unlimited1 number of devices.

1The maximum number of devices that Cisco Secure Policy Manager can support. Currently = 750

Note If you ordered Cisco Secure Policy Manager on CD-ROM, the license disk is packaged with your product. During the installation process you are prompted for the license disk and the password for that license. This license is a permanent one; therefore, you should not have to update it until the next release of the product.

System Requirements

Before you can upgrade your current license, you must have an operational Cisco Secure Policy Manager installation running on the required hardware and software as specified in the Cisco Secure Policy Manager Installation Guide.

Note You can replace any Cisco Secure Policy Manager license with any other license as long as the new license supports the same release of Cisco Secure Policy Manager that you are currently running and the new license cannot expire (licenses that can expire are used during beta and evaluation periods).

Upgrading the License

To upgrade the Cisco Secure Policy Manager license, perform the following task:

Step 1 To log on to the GUI client, use an administrative account with full-access privilege.

Result: The GUI client loads.

Step 2 To access the Update Product License dialog box, point to Product Updates on the Help menu, and click License.

Result: The Update Product License dialog box appears.

Note The read-only value in the License host box identifies the Policy Server host running the Primary Policy Database, and thus the primary host that will be targeted for the license upgrade. The primary host distributes the upgrade information to all secondary hosts in the system. This box is for informational purposes only.

Step 3 To specify the filename and path to the license file, type that filename and path in the License file name and path box, or click Browse to locate that disk and file.

If you stored the license file on your local machine, be sure to record the path to that file for future reference. Most likely, you received a new disk with the license as a component in your upgrade package.

Step 4 To submit the password that corresponds to the license file that you just specified, type that password in the Password box.

Be sure to record this password and store it in a safe place for future reference.

Step 5 To update the product license, click OK. Or, click Cancel to close the Update Product License dialog box without submitting the license update.

After you update your license, you can view the new license information by clicking About this product on the Help menu.
