Getting Started

This chapter provides the basic information you need to install and configure the
Cisco IP/VC 3520 Gateway quickly.

Site Requirements

The site requirements needed to connect and configure the gateway are as follows:

• A PC with a serial port and terminal emulation software to assign the gateway an IP address

• A dedicated IP address for the gateway

• IP address of the router the gateway will use to communicate across the network

• IP address of the H.323 gatekeeper you want the gateway to register with

• A 10BASE-T or 100BASE-T Ethernet cable.

• At least one ISDN BRI line or at least one V.35 DCE connection with EIA/TIA-366 signaling

• A grounded AC power outlet nearby

• Ambient room temperature range of 32 to 104^oF (0 to 40^oC) with a noncondensing relative humidity range of 15% to 85%

• Unblocked side air vents for the gateway

• A Windows 95/98 or NT computer connected to the network and running TCP/IP to configure the gateway for operation

Instructions for Quick Installation

This section provides basic instructions to let you quickly connect and configure the gateway. To quickly set up the gateway, perform the following steps:

See the "Setting the IP Address" section in the "Installing the Hardware" chapter.

Step 2 Connect the gateway to the network.

See the "Installing the Mounting Brackets" and the "Connecting the Gateway to the LAN" sections in the "Installing the Hardware" chapter.

Step 3 Install the Cisco IP/VC Configuration Utility on the network computer that you will use to configure the gateway.

See the "Cisco IP/VC Tools" section in the "Installing the Cisco IP/VC Tools Software" chapter.

Step 4 Set the operating parameters for gateway:

a. Start the Cisco IP/VC Configuration Utility.

See the "Accessing a Utility" section in the "Installing the Cisco IP/VC Tools Software" chapter.

b. Select or enter the IP address of the Cisco IP/VC 3520 Gateway you want to configure.

See the section "Selecting a Configuration Source" in the "Configuring the Cisco IP/VC 3520 Gateway" chapter.

c. Specify the IP address of the gatekeeper you want the gateway to use.

See the "Setting Miscellaneous Parameters" section in the "Configuring the Cisco IP/VC 3520 Gateway" chapter.

d. Specify the IP address of the router you want the gateway to use.

See the "Setting Miscellaneous Parameters" section in the "Configuring the Cisco IP/VC 3520 Gateway" chapter.

e. Set the bonding parameter you want the gateway to use.

See the "Setting Miscellaneous WAN Parameters" section in the "Configuring the Cisco IP/VC 3520 Gateway" chapter.

f. Define the services you want the gateway to provide.

See the "Setting Gateway Services" section in the "Configuring the Cisco IP/VC 3520 Gateway" chapter.

g. Configure the WAN ports.

See the "Setting WAN Port Parameters" section in the "Configuring the Cisco IP/VC 3520 Gateway" chapter.

h. Upload the configuration file to the gateway Flash memory.

See the "Saving the File and Uploading to Memory" section in the "Configuring the Cisco IP/VC 3520 Gateway" chapter.

Note The gateway must register with a gatekeeper on the network. The Cisco IP/VC 3520 Gateway is H.323 version 2-compliant and will automatically register with external gatekeepers that are also H.323 version 2-compliant. If you want to use the embedded gatekeeper, you must manually register the gateway. See the "Configuring the Embedded Gatekeeper" appendix latter in this guide for instructions on how to enable and configure the gatekeeper.
