Monitoring the VTA

Monitoring the VTA

This chapter discusses monitoring the VTA and using the Diagnostics menus.

Monitoring the VTA

You can monitor the VTA using the Diagnostics utility. The Diagnostics utility is a series of diagnostic menus that allow you to view information about:

Accessing the Diagnostic Menus

The diagnostic menus are accessed through terminal emulator software running on a PC connected to the VTA's console (serial) port. You can connect the PC directly to the VTA's console port, or indirectly via modems. For information, see "Connecting to the Console Port" in "Setting Up Your System."

Prerequisites

Before you begin decide whether you will be accessing the diagnostic utility locally or from a remote location.

If you are accessing the diagnostic utility locally, verify that:

If you are accessing the diagnostic menus from a remote location, verify that:

Creating a Dial-Up Connection to the VTA

Refer to your terminal emulator online help or documentation for instructions on creating a new dial-up connection.

Create a new dial-up connection with the following parameters:

Modem Connection

When connecting to the VTA via a modem, the connection is made using a crossed RS-232 cable. The connection to the VTA is a female, 9-pin connector. The modem connector depends on the type of modem being used.

The modem configuration parameters should be:

The host modem can be of any type and manufacture.

Using the Diagnostics Menus

To use the Diagnostics Menus, type the menu option; for all menus except the main menu press Enter after choosing the option.

Note The option, once typed cannot be corrected; however, you can always return to the previous menu and select a different option.

Running the Diagnostics Utility

Note The Diagnostics utility is adapted for the VTA, even if your version of the utility displays "Gateway" instead.

To run the online diagnostics utility, perform the following steps:

Step 1 Run the terminal emulator. If the VTA is at a remote site, connect to the VTA with the dial-up connection you created. Wait for the prompt.

Step 2 Type diag at the prompt.

Step 3 Type admin when prompted for the User Name.

Step 4 Type cisco when prompted for the Password.

Note The Remote Diagnostics program allows you to enter the User Name and Password five times before exiting the program.
