This chapter describes how to set up the MCU system and install the IP/VC 3500 Configuration Utililty software. Site requirements, package contents, setting an IP address, mounting the system, and connecting the LAN are also discussed.
The IP/VC 3510 MCU is suited for an office environment where it can be free standing or rack mounted with your other network equipment.
Before deciding where to mount the MCU, ensure that:
Your Cisco IP/VC 3510 package contains the following items:
Inspect the content of the box for shipping damage. Report any damage or missing items to your distributor or reseller.
Before you place the unit on the network, you must assign it an IP address. You can set the IP address via the serial port of a computer. This section describes how to use the serial port to configure the unit with IP address information. You need the following to set the address:
To set the IP address, perform the following steps:
Step 1 Locate the serial cable shipped with the gateway and connect the connector labeled PC to the serial port on the computer and the connector labeled Unit to the serial port connector on the gateway front panel.
Step 2 Connect the power cable to the gateway and a power outlet.
Step 3 Start the terminal emulator on the computer.
Step 4 Power on the unit. The gateway's internal software scrolls down the console.
Step 5 When the message Press any key to start configuration appears on the screen, press any key within six seconds. An options list appears.
Step 6 At the prompt, enter 1 and press Enter to select the for configuration of default ethernet port value option. This option allows you to set the IP address information. configure the default port values. The prompt Enter Default Interface Number appears.
Step 7 At the prompt, type 1 for port 1. Press Enter. The Enter IP Address for Interface No 1 prompt appears.
Step 8 Enter the IP address you want to assign to the unit and press Enter. The Enter Default Router IP address prompt appears.
Step 9 Enter the IP address of the router associated with the segment in which the unit will be installed and press Enter. The Enter IP Mask <HEX> prompt appears.
Step 10 If the unit will be associated with a subnet mask, convert the subnet mask IP address to hex at the prompt and press Enter. You can use the computer's desktop calculator to convert the submask ID to hex.
The program writes the information to the unit's firmware. When the activity stops, exit the configuration software and unplug the unit. Install the unit on the appropriate network segment.
You can install the MCU in a 19-inch rack or stack the unit with other IP/VC 3500 products up to four deep. The mounting kit supplied with the MCU includes two brackets for mounting the unit on a rack. This section describes how to install the brackets for mounting the unit on a 19-inch rack.
To attach the mounting brackets, perform the following steps:
Step 1 Place the MCU right-side up on a hard flat surface, with the front panel facing you.
Step 2 Position a mounting bracket over the mounting holes on one side of the MCU, as shown in Figure 3-1.

Step 3 Pass the two screws through the washers and bracket holes, inserting them into the chassis and tighten them securely with a suitable screwdriver.
Step 4 Repeat Steps 2 and 3 for the other side of the MCU.
Step 5 Insert the unit into the 19-inch rack and secure with suitable screws. Two screws are needed for each side. These are not provided with the MCU.
Step 6 Verify the air vents at the sides of the MCU are not blocked.
To connect the MCU to the LAN, perform the following steps:
Step 1 Attach the network cable to the 10/100BaseT port.
Step 2 Connect the power cable.
Step 3 Turn the unit's power on.
The MCU runs through the Power On Self Test (POST) and the LEDs on the front panel behave in the following manner:
This section describes how to install and start the IP/VC Configuration Utililty software. This software allows you to configure all IP/VC 3500 Series hardware including the IP/VC 3510 MCU, the IP/VC 3520 and IP/VC 3525 Gateways, and the IP/VC 3530 VTA.
The computer on which you are installing the configuration utility must have the following:
You must install the IP/VC Configuration utility on a computer running Microsoft Windows or the Windows NT operating system.
The IP/VC 3500 CD-ROM setup installs the IP/VC configuration software on your hard drive. The CD-ROM contains the following:
To install the IP/VC 3500 software, perform the following steps:
Step 1 Start Windows or Window NT on the computer on which you want to install the configuration utility.
Step 2 Insert the IP/VC 3500 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive on the computer (usually drive D:).
If your CD-ROM drive is configured with Auto Insert Notification enabled, the Cisco IP/VC Installer window appears automatically.
If you do not have Auto Insert Notification enabled, click Start>Run and enter D:\setup (assuming D: is your CD -ROM drive) on the Run dialog box. After a few moments the Setup program displays the Cisco IP/TV Installer window.
Step 3 Follow the installation setup program instructions.
You can access the configuration software windows sequentially by clicking the Next and Prev buttons. Some windows also have secondary windows that are accessed through buttons. These are identified by the name of the window they invoke, for example, the Date/Time Settings window is a secondary window of the Unit Identification window and can be accessed from the Date/Time button on this screen.
Table 3-1 describes the configuration utility navigation buttons.
| Button | Shortcut Keys | Action |
|---|---|---|
Next | Alt-N | Moves to a subsequent screen, saving any changes you made. |
Prev | Alt-P | Moves to a previous screen. If you exit a screen using Prev, then changes to the information in the screen are not saved. |
Abort | Alt-A | Exits the Configuration program without saving your changes. |
Finish | Alt-F | Allows you to save the configuration settings in a file and upload these settings to the MCU. |
Detect | Alt-D | Sends a broadcast message to the network, requesting identification from any IP/VC 3500 units that have not yet identified themselves. |
Finish | Alt-F | Allows you to save the configuration settings in a file and upload these settings to the MCU. The MCU does not restart after you transfer the configuration settings to the unit. When restarting the MCU is necessary for changes to take affect, the Finish buttons are dimmed. |
Load | Alt-L | Loads a locally saved file. |
Save | --- | Saves parameter values of the screen to the local disk as a text file in the directory where you installed the Configuration Software. |
Add | Alt-D | Displays a screen allowing you to define an entry to the particular table. |
Delete | Alt-T | Deletes a selected entry in a table. |
Edit | Alt-E | Displays a selected entry parameter screen, allowing you to make changes to the entry. |
OK | --- | Saves the information to the Gatekeeper/MCU and exits the screen. The saved tables contain only static data that is both readable and writeable. For the Gatekeeper, dynamic-only registration information is not saved. |
Cancel | .--- | Returns to the previous screen without saving any changes you made to the current screen |
Yes | Alt-Y | Saves the parameters and proceeds to the next screen |
No | Alt-N | Returns to the previous screen to modify the parameters. |
