Working with Messages

Working with Messages

The LocalDirector User Interface presents messages in a number of ways, including the standard system logs, SNMP traps, a message area window, and a probe details status window. This chapter describes how to work with LocalDirector User Interface messages. It includes the following sections:

Messages in LocalDirector User Interface

The LocalDirector User Interface provides text messages for a number of reasons, not all of which are related to errors or problems with the system. The types of message you can expect include:

Messages such as those listed are presented using the following mechanisms:

The standard system logs and SNMP trap mechanism present the same set of messages. The Message area shows the same messages as those sent to the system logs and trapped by SNMP, and also may show additional user-generated notes. The Probe Details window displays the details of a probe step operation.

This chapter describes viewing and working with messages in the LocalDirector User Interface.

Accessing Messages through System Logs

The LocalDirector User Interface displays system messages through the standard system logs. In a Windows NT system, messages are logged in the Windows NT Event Log of the system running the LocalDirector User Interface server. On a UNIX system, messages are logged in the system log file of the system running the LocalDirector User Interface server. These are text messages with the following information.

The LocalDirector User Interface messages are automatically sent to the standard system log; you need not set up anything for this transmission to happen. On a UNIX system, the system log is in the directory /var/adm/messages by default. On a Windows NT system, access the Event Viewer through the Start menu. Select the Programs submenu, followed by the Administration Tools (Common) submenu, and select Event Viewer. The LocalDirector User Interface 3.1 events are recorded as Application events, rather than System events.

Sending SNMP Traps

As a complement to the standard system logs message mechanism, the LocalDirector User Interface allows you to send system messages to one or more SNMP managers as SNMP traps (using SNMP version 1). You can configure the LocalDirector User Interface server with a list of SNMP managers (by specifying a host name or a host IP address). As an event message is trapped, the LocalDirector User Interface server sends that logged message to every SNMP manager configured into the LocalDirector User Interface server.

The LocalDirector User Interface is able to:

When you install the LocalDirector User Interface, an accompanying MIB of the potential SNMP traps also is installed in the LocalDirector User Interface base directory. You should import this MIB into any SNMP manager receiving traps from the LocalDirector User Interface.

Trapping Messages for SNMP Notification

Follow this procedure to set up the LocalDirector User Interface to send messages to one or more specified SNMP managers:

Step 1 At a UNIX command line or from the Windows Explorer on the LocalDirector User Interface host system, go to the base directory where the LocalDirector User Interface is installed (for example, C:\Program Files\Cisco\LocalDirector User Interface 3.1 in Windows).

Step 2 Copy the LocalDirector User Interface MIB file, mib-v2.txt, to the SNMP management station following the standard procedure outlined in your SNMP manager documentation. The LocalDirector User Interface MIB identifier is .1.3.6.1.4.1.3381.2.

Step 3 From the main LocalDirector User Interface window, select the Server Properties option from the File menu.

Step 4 At the resulting window, select the SNMP tab. The LocalDirector User Interface SNMP Server Properties window displays (see Figure 7-1).

Step 5 Enter the following optional information:

Step 6 For the Hosts area, enter the desired information:

Step 7 Ensure that the Traps enabled box is checked. You can only enable traps if at least one SNMP manager IP address is listed in the Hosts area.

Step 8 Click OK to dismiss the Server Properties window and return to the main LocalDirector User Interface window.

Importing a LocalDirector User Interface SNMP Server Configuration to LocalDirector

Follow this procedure to optionally import a LocalDirector User Interface SNMP server configuration into a LocalDirector configuration:

Step 1 At the LocalDirector User Interface window, right-click on the LocalDirector icon where you want to set up the SNMP configuration.

Step 2 Select Properties.

Step 3 Select the SNMP tab.

Step 4 Click the Import LUI Settings button.

Step 5 Click OK.

The relevant SNMP manager address(es) are updated (see Figure 7-3).

Using the Message Area

The Message area of the main LocalDirector User Interface window is an interactive "tear-off" window. It includes a display of the same system messages logged in the standard system logs and sent to the SNMP servers. It can also accept user-generated notes, and allows you to acknowledge any messages listed in the Message area. You can leave the Message area at its default location at the bottom of the main LocalDirector User Interface window, or "tear" it off to make it a standalone message area. Figure 7-4 shows the Message area of the main LocalDirector User Interface window.

Figure 7-4: Message Area

Messages in the Message area are identified as follows:

Interact with the Message area by right-clicking in the Message area, which displays the following popup menu (see Figure 7-5).

Figure 7-5: Message Area Popup Menu

The options that are available from the Message area popup menu are described in Table 7-1.

Table 7-1: Message Area Menu Options
Menu Selection Description

New Message

Displays a text editor window where you can specify a user-generated note.

Acknowledge Message

Displays a text editor window where you enter your username. When you click OK, the messages is marked as acknowledged with an accompanying username.

Delete

Removes a message in the Message area. All messages can be deleted; they need not be acknowledged first.

Dock/Undock

Tears off or reattaches the Message area from or to the bottom of the main LocalDirector User Interface window.

Acknowledging Messages

At any point, follow this procedure to acknowledge a message in the Message area:

Step 1 Select the message to be acknowledged.

Step 2 Right-click on that message.

Step 3 Select Acknowledge Message. An Acknowledge Message window displays (see Figure 7-6).

Figure 7-6: Acknowledging Messages

Step 4 Optionally, you can enter your username.

Step 5 Click OK.

The name is recorded, the Ack column of the Message area is checkmarked, and the username is listed.

Creating User-Defined Notes

In addition to system messages, the Message area also allows you to enter your own notes. These are completely user-defined notes and have nothing to do with system-generated messages. User-defined notes are one-time notes; they will not be automatically generated by the system at any other time. Follow this procedure to create a user-defined note:

Step 1 Right-click in the Message area.

Step 2 Select New Message. An Add User Event window displays (see Figure 7-7).

Figure 7-7: Adding Messages

Step 3 Select the severity you want the message to have: Error, Warning, or Informational.

Step 4 In the Message field, type your message.

Step 5 In the Username field, you can optionally type your username.

Step 6 Click OK.

The new message appears in the Message area. Your username appears (in parentheses) in the message column of the Message area.

Making the Message Area a Standalone Area

The Message area can be separated from the main LocalDirector User Interface window (see Figure 7-8). Separating the Message area may be useful if you want to monitor LocalDirector or server farm problems without having the entire LocalDirector User Interface window displayed. Follow this procedure to "tear off" the Message area:

Step 1 Right-click in the Message area.

Step 2 Select Undock. This tears off the Message area into a separate window that you can then move elsewhere. By default, the torn off Message area is displayed at the top left of the desktop.

Figure 7-8: Undocked Message Area

Step 3 To reattach the Message area, right-click in the Message area and select Dock.

Looking at Detailed Probe Step Messages

The system logs, SNMP traps, and Message area display only general system messages. If a system message is caused by a probe failure, you can inspect the probe steps with the Probe Details window. The Probe Details window presents a detailed account of a probe and its steps as they are run for each real server. It is available through the Probe Status area. See the chapter "Testing Server Farms" earlier in this document for more information.
