LocalDirector User Interface Advanced Configurations

LocalDirector User Interface Advanced Configurations

This chapter describes advanced LocalDirector configurations. It is assumed that you have already connected to one or more LocalDirectors. This chapter contains the following sections:

Changing Basic LocalDirector Configurations

In addition to the configuration procedures described in the chapter "LocalDirector User Interface Basic Configuration," you may want to change the configuration of your LocalDirector in other ways, such as:

The LocalDirector User Interface can operate in one of two modes when you edit configurations:

Note Changes made in the LocalDirector User Interface have no effect on a LocalDirector until the LocalDirector is attached to the current LocalDirector User Interface configuration (right-click the LocalDirector entry and select Attach Configuration). An attached LocalDirector is associated with a configuration, and all changes made to that configuration are reflected on the LocalDirector as long as the LocalDirector User Interface is in Online mode.

Accessing Other LocalDirector User Interface Configurations

The LocalDirector User Interface allows you to open and load other configurations into the current LocalDirector User Interface. From there, you can load them into a LocalDirector to which you are connected. Follow this procedure to load another LocalDirector configuration into the LocalDirector User Interface:

Step 1 If you have a currently active configuration, at the main LocalDirector User Interface window, select the File menu Close option before opening a new configuration.

Step 2 Select the File menu Open option or click the Open icon. The Open window displays with a list of configurations known to the LocalDirector User Interface server (see Figure 4-1).

Note The currently active configuration is not displayed in this list.

Figure 4-1: Open Configuration Window

Step 3 Select the configuration you want and click Open.

The main LocalDirector User Interface window displays the new configuration information.

Step 4 If you want to create a new configuration, select the File menu New option, type a unique name into the text field, and click the OK button.

Step 5 If you want to delete an existing configuration, select the File menu Delete option, select that name, click the Delete button, and click Yes at the confirmation dialog. You can delete as many configurations as necessary, then click Done to exit the window.

Attaching LocalDirector to a LocalDirector User Interface Configuration

To attach a selected LocalDirector to a currently open configuration, right-click the LocalDirector entry and select Attach Configuration on the popup menu (see Figure 4-2). This action starts a synchronization process as described later in the section "Synchronizing LocalDirector and LocalDirector User Interface Configurations." You can choose to either overwrite the current LocalDirector User Interface configuration with the LocalDirector configuration, or overwrite the LocalDirector configuration with the current LocalDirector User Interface configuration. The LocalDirector User Interface places all servers loaded from LocalDirector into either the Any or Unbound server groups (if the server is specified as unbound in the LocalDirector). If a server needs to be in the Web group, you need to move it manually (see the chapter "Configuring Server Farms" later in this guide).

Caution Once LocalDirector is attached to a LocalDirector User Interface configuration, any edits made to that LocalDirector User Interface configuration are reflected at the attached LocalDirector. You can only delete an unattached LocalDirector or configuration.

Loading a LocalDirector Configuration into the LocalDirector User Interface

You can load the configuration attached to a particular LocalDirector into the LocalDirector User Interface by right-clicking the selected LocalDirector entry and selecting Open Configuration at the popup menu. This operation attaches LocalDirector to the LocalDirector User Interface.

Detaching LocalDirector from the LocalDirector User Interface

An attached LocalDirector appears in the gray area at the top of the LocalDirector view. At any time, you can detach an attached LocalDirector from the LocalDirector User Interface by right-clicking on the LocalDirector entry and selecting Detach LocalDirector at the popup menu. An unattached LocalDirector appears in the LocalDirector view with a question mark icon superimposed on it. Any subsequent edits you make are then made only to the LocalDirector User Interface, not the LocalDirector configuration.

Note You can only delete an unattached LocalDirector or configuration.

Deleting a LocalDirector Entry

You can only delete a LocalDirector entry from the LocalDirector User Interface if you have detached that LocalDirector from any LocalDirector User Interface configuration. A detached LocalDirector appears in the LocalDirector view with a blue question mark superimposed on the icon. Follow this procedure to ensure you can delete a LocalDirector:

Step 1 Right-click the LocalDirector entry to be deleted and select Open Configuration. The LocalDirector is attached and appears at the top of the LocalDirector view.

Step 2 Right-click the attached LocalDirector and select Detach from Configuration. The LocalDirector now appears in the LocalDirector view with a blue question mark superimposed on it.

Step 3 Right-click the LocalDirector and select Delete. The LocalDirector should disappear from the LocalDirector view.

Saving a LocalDirector User Interface Configuration

From the LocalDirector User Interface, follow this procedure to save the configuration attached to LocalDirector (as it currently appears in the LocalDirector User Interface) to either the LocalDirector memory or the TFTP server. (See the chapter "LocalDirector User Interface Basic Configuration" earlier in this document for a description of how to save a configuration attached to LocalDirector to the TFTP server with the write net command.) All TFTP directory paths in this section assume a LocalDirector TFTP directory of "/" (set with the LocalDirector tftp-server command).

Step 1 At the main LocalDirector User Interface window, right-click the attached LocalDirector and select Write Configuration (see Figure 4-3).

Figure 4-3: Selecting Write Configuration

The Write Configuration dialog pops up (see Figure 4-4).

Figure 4-4: Write Configuration Popup

Step 2 Select one of the desired write destinations:

If you select TFTP server and want to use existing LocalDirector TFTP settings, select Use LocalDirector TFTP settings and (optionally) type a name for the configuration file. The rest of the information in the TFTP server area is grayed out. Click OK. As an example, the resulting file appears in LocalDirector User Interface base directory\tftpfiles\configuration file name for Windows systems.
If you select TFTP server and want to specify a different TFTP server from the one currently known to the LocalDirector, enter the IP address of that server, a port number, and (optionally) a name for the configuration file (HostNameInLocalDirectorMemory.conf by default). Click OK.

Synchronizing LocalDirector and LocalDirector User Interface Configurations

To make sure that the configuration you are working on in the LocalDirector User Interface is in accord with the connected (attached) LocalDirector, you may want to synchronize the LocalDirector User Interface with that LocalDirector. The Synchronize with Configuration command is available by right-clicking on the connected LocalDirector that you want to update and selecting Synchronize with Configuration. If there are differences between the two configurations, this command brings up a split-pane window (see Figure 4-5) with the configurations of the connected LocalDirector and the current LocalDirector User Interface displayed side by side. If there are no differences, this command completes after the synchronization is complete.

This window is essentially a check that you can use to ensure total synchronization between the LocalDirector User Interface and LocalDirector.

Note You can only synchronize the LocalDirector User Interface and LocalDirector while in Online mode.

To synchronize the two configurations, you can choose either of the following options:

Editing LocalDirector Connection Properties

Follow this procedure to change the connection properties of LocalDirector:

Step 1 In the LocalDirector view, right-click on the LocalDirector entry that you want to change (see Figure 4-6).

Figure 4-6: LocalDirector Connection Properties

A window displays with the current connection properties (see Figure 4-7).

Figure 4-7: Current LocalDirector Connection Properties

Step 2 At this window, you can change the following connection properties:

Step 3 If you change the Telnet password of the LocalDirector connection, you can optionally use the Test button to test the new connectivity with the displayed/edited parameters.

Step 4 Click OK.
