Using Cisco Secure Scanner

Using Cisco Secure Scanner

This chapter takes you through the preliminary configuration screens of the Scanner. Other detailed information about how to create sessions, working with the Grid Browser, generating reports, and so forth, can be found in subsequent chapters in this guide.

This chapter includes the following sections:

Scanner Main Screen

From the Scanner main screen, you can view your license information, request a license, set your user preferences, configure sessions, and access the Network Security Database (NSDB). There is also a Sample Session so you can familiarize yourself with the components of a Scanner Session. Figure 5-1 shows the main screen and identifies the toolbar buttons and menu functions.

Click About on the Help menu to view license information and to send in license request information (Figure 5-2).

By clicking License info you can see the type of license you have for the Scanner. The Scanner License Info screen shows the following information:

Figure 5-3 shows an example of a one-host license, the standard evaluation license.

See Chapter 4, "Licensing Cisco Secure Scanner" for more information on obtaining a Scanner license.

There are also pop-up menus associated with the items on the Scanner Sessions tree (see Table 5-1).

Before the Scanner can function properly, the user preferences must be set.

To set the user preferences, click Preferences on the File menu, or click Preferences on the toolbar.

This section contains the following topics:

Note It is only necessary to set your user preferences the first time you use the Scanner. You can use the Preferences dialog box to change your preferences at any time.

Names

The Names tab by default shows the name and company of the licensed user who installed the Scanner (Figure 5-4).

Session Browser Detail

To choose the level of session tree browser detail that is displayed on the Scanner main window, click the Session Browser tab, then select one or more of the check boxes. Figure 5-5 shows the Session Browser tab with the default setting of Full Detail.

Figure 5-5: Session Browser Tab

You can choose from the following levels of detail:

Grid Browser Detail

To change the level of detail available in the Grid Browser, click the Grid Browser tab and type a value between 1 and 99 in the Level of grid detail box (you can use the up or down arrows to increase or decrease the value in the box). Figure 5-6 shows the Grid Browser tab with the default setting of 5.

Figure 5-6: Grid Browser Tab

A level 1 setting only allows you to view the major headings in the grid (see Figure 5-7). A setting of 99 allows you to view the maximum amount of detail in the grid. The values you choose also indicate how many levels cascade when you swap axes. You can change the level of detail on the Grid Browser tab at any time. The next time you open a grid view, you see the new level of detail.

Tips If you set the grid detail to 10, you get a sufficient amount of detail, because there are seldom more than 10 levels of detail (see Figure 5-8). However, setting it to 99 guarantees that you will see every level.

HTML Browser Location

To enter the path to your preferred HTML browser, click the HTML Browser tab and type the path in the Browser Location field. If you are not sure of the location of your HTML browser, click Browse to find the path or folder in which the browser is located. Figure 5-9 shows the HTML Browser tab with the default setting.

Note You need an HTML browser to be able to view the Network Security Database (NSDB) and the Scanner reports. See Chapter 10, "Network Security Database" for more detail on the NSDB and Chapter 9, "Generating Reports" for more information on the Scanner reports.

To display the Scanner toolbars, click the Misc tab and select the Show Toolbars check box. If you do not want the toolbars displayed, clear the Show Toolbars check box. If you do not want to see the Session Status dialog box as the session is running, clear the Show Session Status check box. Figure 5-10 shows the Misc tab and the default settings. Refer to "Toolbar Glossary" for a complete list of Scanner toolbar buttons and their descriptions.
