This chapter describes the procedures for licensing the Scanner.
This chapter includes the following sections:
You must license your copy of the Scanner before you can use it. You will need the license ID number found on the back of your Cisco Secure Scanner CD sleeve. Your License Certificate will come back to you via email regardless of whether you submit it via the Web or email.
This section contains the following topics:
![]() | Caution The Scanner installation utility extracts system-specific information. Therefore, you must license the Scanner from the machine on which you intend to use the software; otherwise, licensing is not successful. |
To enter license request information, follow these steps:
Step 1 Start the Scanner.
See "Starting the Scanner" in Chapter 2, "Installing Cisco Secure Scanner for Windows NT" and "Starting the Scanner" in Chapter 3, "Installing Cisco Secure Scanner for Solaris."
Step 2 On the Scanner main window, click Help>About.
The About window appears on screen.
Step 3 Click License Request.
The License Request Utility dialog box appears on screen (Figure 4-1).
Step 4 Fill in the following fields on the License Request Utility dialog box:
![]() | Caution You must fill in all fields, otherwise your request will be rejected. |
(a) License ID number (found on the back of the Cisco Secure Scanner CD sleeve)
(b) Email address to receive license certificates
(c) Contact name and phone number for product updates
(d) Email address for product updates and announcements
(e) SMTP mail server (only needed if you submit your request by email)
(f) Method of requesting license certificates (Figure 4-2)
Step 5 Click OK.
The License Certificate Request screen appears in your browser (Figure 4-3).
Step 6 Click Submit Your License Certificate Request to send your license information to Cisco.
You receive a License Certificate Request Response form with the information that you just entered.
After you submit the license request information, Cisco's license server processes it and sends a License Certificate to you. You receive this file either as an email message or as a fax, depending on the method you used to submit your license information and whether or not you have email connectivity.
This section includes the following topics:
Generally, your License Certificate comes to you via email. Figure 4-4 shows a sample License Certificate.
The recommended method for creating your license file is to use the Save As option in your email program.
![]() | Caution Do not modify the license file (.lic) in any way unless instructed to do so by Cisco. If you modify the license file, the Scanner will not run. |
To create a license file using the Save As option, follow these steps:
Step 1 Save a copy of the license file email in case your license file ever becomes corrupted.
Step 2 Open the email License Certificate and click File>Save As in your email program.
Step 3 Name the file license.lic and save it to the following directory:
..etc\licenses
Some email programs append the .txt extension to the end of the license file. That is ok, as long as the .lic appears in the file, for example, license.lic.txt.
If you received a fax or if your email program does not have the Save As option, you can create a license file by using a text editor program like NotePad.
![]() | Caution Do not modify the license file (.lic) in any way unless instructed to do so by Cisco Systems. If you modify the license file, the Scanner will not run. |
To create a licence file using NotePad, follow these steps:
Step 1 Save a copy of the email or fax License Certificate in case your license file ever becomes corrupted.
Step 2 If you received an email License Certificate, go to Step a. If you received a fax License Certificate, go to Step b.
(a) Copy the contents of the email message into a text file in NotePad.
(b) Type the information that appears between Begin License Certificate and End License Certificate into a text file in NotePad.
![]() | Caution Make sure you type the information exactly as it appears in the License Certificate. The certificate text is case sensitive, and if there are any extra spaces or characters, the license file will not be valid. |
Step 3 Save the text file to the following directory:
..\etc\licenses
You can name the file whatever you like, but make sure it has an .lic extension. Some text editors automatically add .txt to the file. The Scanner will still recognize those as long as the .lic precedes it. For example, license.lic.txt is acceptable.
When the Scanner starts, it checks the license file to make sure that the license is valid and unexpired. There are several possible situations in which you can receive a message stating your license is invalid or expired.
This section includes the following topics:
In the following situations, your Scanner license is invalid. Follow the directions in this section to obtain a valid license.
This section contains the following topics:
The evaluation version of the Scanner comes with an embedded one-host license, but you must register it before it will function. The following dialog box (Figure 4-5) appears on screen the first time that you start the Scanner.
Go to http://www.cisco.com/go/scanner-eval to register your copy and download an evaluation license.
If your license file has been corrupted or contains extra spaces or characters, you will receive an invalid license message. See "Creating the License File" for instructions on creating a new license file based on your saved License Certificate.
A consultant's license and licenses for downloaded copies of the Scanner expire after a certain time period. You receive the message shown in Figure 4-6 after your trial period has expired.
Go to http://www.cisco.com or contact your Cisco representative to purchase your copy of the software.
