This chapter describes the procedures for installing, licensing, and starting and stopping Cisco Secure Scanner for Windows NT (formerly sold as NetSonar).
This chapter includes the following sections:
Cisco recommends specific minimum hardware, software, and operating system requirements for the machine on which you plan to install the Scanner. Before you install the Scanner, verify that your machine meets the minimum requirements listed in Table 2-1. Contact your system administrator if your machine does not meet all of the following minimum requirements.

See the following section, "Changing Virtual Memory" for instructions on how to change your paging file size in Windows NT. The Cisco Secure Scanner ReadMe dialog box also gives you the path for configuring the Scanner to run as a service. See "Running the Scanner as a Service" for more information.
Step 10 Click OK to display one of the following dialog boxes:

Step 14 Click OK.
The Install dialog box is displayed prompting you to restart your machine.
Step 15 Click OK to restart your machine to complete the Scanner installation.
The Scanner is now installed on your machine. A short-cut icon (Cisco Secure Scanner) is added to your desktop. Scanner Help, Cisco Secure Scanner 2.0, and UnInstall Scanner are added to the Start>Programs>Cisco Systems>Cisco Secure Scanner menu. The Scanner Server now appears in the list of services in the Control Panel. See "Running the Scanner as a Service" for instructions to have the Scanner run continuously in the background as a service.
For the Scanner to run the most efficiently, you need to update the paging file size.
To update the paging file size, follow these steps:
Step 1 Click Start, then click Settings>Control Panel.
Step 2 Double-click Systems.
The System Properties dialog box appears on screen.
Step 3 Click the Performance tab.
Step 4 Click Change.
The Virtual Memory dialog box appears on screen.
Step 5 Under Paging File Size for Selected Drive, make the following changes:
Step 6 Click Set.
Step 7 Click OK.
Step 8 Click Close.
A message box appears telling you that you must restart your computer for the change to take effect.
Step 9 Click Yes to restart your computer.
The Scanner is installed to run as an application by default. When you launch the Scanner GUI, a DOS box called Cisco Secure Scanner 2.0 also appears as a minimized icon on the task bar. In the DOS box is a batch file that coordinates the Scanner starts and stops so that all parts of the Scanner are launched and shut down at the same time. The Scanner GUI and the DOS box have to be running for scheduled scans to run. If you close the Scanner GUI or DOS box, scheduled scans will not run until the next time you start the Scanner.
Running the Scanner as a service avoids this problem. When the Scanner Server is running as a service, it is always running in the background and therefore all scans proceed as scheduled. The following section, "Running the Scanner as a Service" provides more information.
During installation, the Scanner Server is added to the list of services in the Windows NT Control Panel. If you want to run the Scanner as a service rather than as an application, you must be logged on as the user for the service. Once you configure the Scanner to run as a service, the Cisco Secure Scanner 2.0 DOS box disappears when the GUI is launched.
Follow these steps to run the Scanner in the background as a service:
Step 1 Click Start, then click Settings>Control Panel.
Step 2 Double-click Services.
The Services dialog box appears on screen.
Step 3 Highlight Scanner Server.
Step 4 Click Startup.
The Service dialog box appears on screen.
Step 5 Under Startup, click Automatic.
Step 6 Under Log On As, click This Account.
Step 7 Type your valid username and password.
Step 8 Click OK, then click Close.
Now, every time you log on to your machine, the Scanner Server starts and runs in the background.
This section includes the following topics:
The Scanner consists of the Scanner Client (the GUI) and the Scanner Server (the service). When you start the Scanner Client, the server starts automatically and runs as a service on Windows NT if you have it configured to run as a service. See "Running the Scanner as a Service" for more information. If you do not have the Scanner configured to run as a service, by default it runs as an application, and when you start the Scanner Client, the Cisco Secure Scanner 2.0 DOS box is launched as a minimized icon. See "Running the Scanner as an Application" for more information.
Follow these steps to start the Scanner:
Step 1 Log on as administrator or as a member of the administrators' group.
Step 2 Click Start, then click Programs>Cisco Systems>Cisco Secure Scanner>Cisco Secure Scanner 2.0
or
click the Cisco Secure Scanner short-cut icon on your desktop.
The Scanner Client (GUI) is launched and the Cisco Secure Scanner 2.0 DOS box is launched as a minimized icon in the task bar.
![]() | Caution If you close the Cisco Secure Scanner 2.0 DOS box, the Scanner will stop functioning. Leave the DOS box minimized in the toolbar while you are running the Scanner. |
Step 3 The Scanner checks the license file to make sure it is valid.
See the section "Invalid or Expired License" for more information.
When you exit the Scanner, the Scanner Client is stopped. Both the GUI and the Cisco Secure Scanner 2.0 DOS box close. The Scanner Server continues to run (if you have the Scanner configured to run as service) unless you manually stop it by clicking Control Panel>Services. You can leave the Scanner Server running in the background.
![]() | Caution If you stop the Scanner Server, scheduled sessions will not run until you restart the Scanner Server by clicking Control Panel>Services. |
Follow these steps to stop the Scanner:
Step 1 Make sure you are logged on as administrator or as a member of the administrators' group.
Step 2 Click File>Exit.
This stops the Scanner Client (GUI).
Step 3 Click Start, then click Settings>Control Panel.
The Control Panel window appears on screen.
Step 4 Double-click the Services icon.
The Services dialog box appears on screen.
Step 5 Highlight Scanner Server and click Stop.
![]() | Caution If you stop the Scanner Server, you must click Control Panel>Services and restart the Scanner Server before you run the Scanner again. |
Follow these steps to uninstall the Scanner:
Step 1 Log on as administrator or as a member of the administrators' group.
Step 2 Click Start, then click Programs>Cisco Systems>Cisco Secure Scanner>UnInstall Scanner.
The Select Uninstall Method dialog box appears on screen.
Step 3 Click either Automatic or Custom and click Next.
Automatic performs the default uninstall and Custom allows you to remove only those files that you want to delete.
The Perform Uninstall dialog box appears on screen.
Step 4 Click Finish to perform the uninstall.
The Uninstall program removes the Scanner's files from your machine.
