Cisco Secure Scanner Version 2.0 for Solaris Release Notes

Cisco Secure Scanner Version 2.0 for Solaris Release Notes

March 2000

These release notes discuss changes, enhancements, and upgrade information for Cisco Secure Scanner version 2.0 for Solaris.

Contents

These release notes discuss the following topics:

New and Changed Information

Netscape Problem

There is a problem with running Netscape version 4.7 with the Solaris version of Cisco Secure Scanner 2.0. To make Netscape function properly with Cisco Secure Scanner, perform the following steps:

Note This procedure assumes that Netscape is installed in /opt/netscape.

Step 1 cd to /usr/css

Step 2 Type the following:

/bin/FixNetScapeBug

Step 3 Enter the location of your Netscape browser.

Note The default location is /opt/netscape/netscape.

Step 4 Start the Scanner.

See "UNIX Shells" and "Documentation Updates" for information on starting the Scanner.

Step 5 The user preferences must now be changed. To set the user preferences, click Preferences on the File menu, or click Preferences on the toolbar.

Step 6 To enter the path to the Netscape HTML browser, click the HTML Browser tab and type the following:

/usr/css/browser.ksh

Name Change

Cisco Secure Scanner for Solaris was previously sold as Cisco NetSonar (versions 1.0 and 1.0.1).

UNIX Shells

If you start Cisco Secure Scanner from a shell other than csh and exit using CTRL-C while in this shell, the CSS GUI and Server will shut down. This is due to signal handles embedded in Java and Python.

If your default shell is something other than csh, for example, sh, then to avoid having the CSS GUI and Server shut down when you exit, follow these steps when you start the Scanner:

Step 1 If you have not already done so, log on as user root.

Step 2 Type the following command:

exec /usr/bin/csh

Step 3 cd to /usr/css.

Step 4 Type the following command:

bin/scanner

This action launches the GUI and the Server.

New Features in Version 2.0

The following features are available in Cisco Secure Scanner for Solaris version 2.0:

Upgrade Information

Caution Version 2.0 of Cisco Secure Scanner for Solaris is not compatible with previous versions of NetSonar for Solaris. Do not uninstall NetSonar versions 1.0 or 1.0.1 if you want to be able to view stored grid data. You can maintain both NetSonar and the Scanner on your machine, but you must have only one product open at a time. There is no converstion utility to transfer session configurations or data sets to the new version 2.0 format.

Sun Operating System Patches

You will need certain Sun operating system patches on your machine to install the Scanner. During Scanner installation, if you do not have these patches, the Install program will stop so that you can go to the Sun web site, http://www.sun.com/solaris/java, and download the following patches:

After you have installed the Sun OS patches, you can begin the Scanner Install program again.

Caveats

Open Caveats

The following is a list of known caveats in Cisco Secure Scanner version 2.0:

Document Updates

Replace "Starting the Scanner for Solaris" in the Cisco Secure Scanner CD-ROM booklet and "Starting the Scanner" in Chapter 3, "Installing Cisco Secure Scanner for Solaris" of the Cisco Secure Scanner User Guide with the following section. See "UNIX Shells" in this document for information relating to starting the Scanner.

To start the Scanner, follow these steps:

Step 1 If you have not already done so, log on as user root.

Step 2 cd to /usr/css.

Step 3 Type the following command:

bin/scanner

This action launches the GUI and the Server.

To have the Scanner run continuously in the background as a daemon, follow these steps:

Step 1 If you have not already done so, log on as user root.

Step 2 cd to /etc/rc2.d.

Step 3 Open the S99scanner file.

Step 4 Uncomment the last two lines in the file:

cd /usr/css

/usr/css/bin/scanner $1

Step 5 Save the file.

Now whenever UNIX is booted, the Scanner Server will start in the background and run even when the GUI is closed. Then all scheduled scans will occur as planned.
