Take Out What You Need

Remove the Sensor, LapLink cable, and power cord from the box.




Before You Continue

Before you continue setting up your NetRanger Sensor, you must have the following:


Note If you do not want to use the LapLink cable that was shipped with your sensor, you must have a VGA monitor and keyboard.




Place the Sensor on the Network

    1. Attach the power cord to the Sensor and plug it into a power source (a UPS is recommended).

    2. Use the LapLink cable to attach a laptop to the Sensor's COM1 port, or connect a VGA monitor and keyboard to the Sensor.

    3. Identify the type of network configuration you have by comparing the Sensor rear panel to the diagram below:

    4. Use the following diagram to attach the Sensor to the network:


Note The "Monitoring Point" can be a hub (Ethernet), a concentrator (Fast Ethernet), or an MAU (Token Ring/SFDDI). If the Sensor is attached to a Dual-attached FDDI ring, the Sensor itself becomes part of the FDDI ring.




Initialize the Sensor

    1. Power on the Sensor.

    2. Log on as user root. The default root password is attack.

    3. Type sysconfig-sensor at the command prompt.

    4. To configure the Sensor, use the following table:
    Menu Option You Enter Example

    IP Address

    The Sensor's IP address.

    10.1.9.201

    IP Netmask

    The Sensor's netmask.

    255.255.255.0

    IP Hostname

    The Sensor's host name.

    sensor-1

    Default Route

    The IP address of the Sensor's gateway, if required.

    10.1.1.101

    Network Access Control

    The IP addresses that can access the Sensor via FTP, Telnet, and TFTP. Include the Director's IP address.

    10.5.3.2

    10.6.1.

    NetRanger Communications Infrastructure

    The Sensor's and Director's Host ID and Name, Organization ID and Name, and IP Address.

    Host ID: 1

    Host Name: sensor-1

    Org ID: 100

    Org Name: marcom

    IP: 10.1.9.201

    System Date, Time, and Time Zone

    Synchronize date/time with another host, enter date/time information manually, and change timezone.

    Follow the system prompts.

    Passwords

    Change passwords for users netrangr and root.

    Follow the system prompts.

    5. sysconfig-sensor prompts you to reboot the Sensor.




Confirm Setup

    1. Log on as user netrangr.

    2. Scan through NetRanger's error log files by typing:

      more /usr/nr/var/errors.*
       
      

    3. Type nrstatus to display a list of running services.

    4. Type nrconns to display the Sensor's connection status.

Make sure that you finalize the Sensor configuration by running nrConfigure on the Director. Refer to the NetRanger User Guide for more information.
