Updating Cisco 6100 Series System Software

Updating Cisco 6100 Series System Software

This chapter gives an overview and describes the purpose for updating the Cisco 6100 Series System software. The chapter includes guidelines for downloading new software images to the Cisco 6100 Series system, and provides instructions for updating the system software.

This chapter includes the following sections:

You can download new software images to any of the following modules:

Updating the System Software---Overview and Purpose

System software download is the method you can use to upgrade the software in each of the Cisco 6100 Series modules. You initiate the software download process by choosing Upgrade 6100 Software from the Tools menu. During the upgrade process, ViewRunner saves the current configuration of the node and then restores the configuration after the process successfully completes. As a fail-safe measure, you should use the Configuration Save wizard (see "Using the Save Configuration and Restore Configuration Features") to store the current NVRAM configuration for later retrieval.

Guidelines for Updating the System Software

Consider the following guidelines before you update system software:

Note You can download new RDFs and images from the Cisco CCO web site.

Downloading Updated Software Images to a Cisco 6100 Series System

The following procedures take you through the process of starting the download wizard, choosing the TFTP server that you want to use for the download, and then downloading the new software images.

Before you begin this procedure, you should save your current provisioning settings as a precaution.

Note Use the Save Configuration wizard to save the current provisioning information and system configuration to a file. Save this information so you can recover your configuration as quickly as possible if recovery becomes necessary.

To begin the upgrade wizard and download new, updated software images to a Cisco 6100 Series system, complete the following steps:

Step 1 Choose View Cisco 6100 Software Image Data from the Tools menu, as shown in
Figure 8-1.

Figure 8-1: Tools Menu

The 6100 Software Images dialog box opens, shown in Figure 8-2. The information in this dialog box can help you determine which images are current and which images you need to update.

Step 2 Now choose Tools and Upgrade 6100 Software from the Tools menu, shown in Figure 8-1, to start the Software Download wizard.

The upgrade software command executes only if all of the following conditions are true:

The System Software Download dialog box opens (see Figure 8-3), which is the upgrade wizard that guides you through the process. While the upgrade is in progress, ViewRunner displays the progress and status.

Step 3 Read each wizard dialog box carefully; click Next to continue through the wizard dialog boxes.

Caution If you have a BOOTP server, the system controller module image that is used is the one specified in the BOOTP table, not the one that is being restored.

ViewRunner presents a list of available RDF releases on the System Software Download dialog box 2 of 5, shown in Figure 8-4.

Step 4 Choose an image from the list of System Software versions, or click Browse to navigate to the image you want.

Note The default folder for the images is c:\Program Files\Cisco\c6100-3.0.0, where 3.0.0 is the release of the Cisco 6100 Series system and the file name identifies the release of the Cisco 6100 Series system to which you intend to upgrade. You can upgrade the system provided that you have installed the RDF and the images.

Step 5 After you select the software release to which you want to upgrade, click Next to continue.

A Confirmation dialog box opens, shown in Figure 8-5.

Step 6 Click OK to confirm the software system that you selected.

The System Software Download dialog box opens, shown in Figure 8-6.

On this dialog box, you need to select the location of the TFTP server that you want to use for the download. You can choose either the local TFTP server for the PC from which you are currently running ViewRunner, or you can use a remote TFTP server (for example, a Unix or NT server). If you choose the local TFTP server, ViewRunner uses its own server to transfer the files. If you choose the remote server, you must provide the IP address for the server and the server image path.

Step 7 Click next to Local TFTP Server to use the TFTP server on your PC that is running ViewRunner (and skip to Step 11.)

Step 8 Click next to Remote TFTP Server to instruct ViewRunner to use a remote server.

Step 9 Enter the IP address for the remote server in the TFTP Server IP Address field.

Step 10 Enter the path in the TFTP Server Image Path field.

For remote TFTP using a UNIX server, the path for the remote TFTP server must correspond to the path configuration on the TFTP daemon. For example:

Depending on your choice of software to download, various information and warning dialog boxes appear in which you can click Continue or Cancel.

ViewRunner informs you of any conditions that affect the download in the System Software Download dialog box.

Step 11 If these conditions are acceptable to you, click Next to continue; if the conditions are not acceptable, click Cancel to stop the process before the download begins.

The following System Software Download dialog box opens, shown in Figure 8-7, and displays the list of files to be downloaded.

Step 12 Select the appropriate files for your configuration.

Note If you are adding new modules to your configuration, be sure to select the appropriate files from the list in this dialog box.

Step 13 Click Next to continue and start downloading the new software files, or if the files listed are incorrect, click Cancel to cancel the process.

If the upgrade wizard determines that you do not need a new system controller module image, the message shown in Figure 8-9 appears in the System Software Download dialog box 4 of 5.

If you continue, the System Software Download dialog box 4 of 5, shown in Figure 8-9, displays. This dialog box informs you that you cannot interrupt the download procedure once you click Next.

Step 14 Click Next to continue, or Cancel to cancel the process.

If you choose to continue, the System Software Download dialog box 5 of 5 opens, shown in Figure 8-10, and displays the progress of the download process.

ViewRunner uses the Save and Restore Configuration utility to transparently store the NVRAM of the older system. By storing the NVRAM of the older system, ViewRunner replaces the configuration items and updates all software images automatically without requiring you do take further action.

If the system controller module image does not change, a Confirmation dialog box displays, shown in Figure 8-11, which informs you that you must reset the system controller module.

Step 15 Reset the system controller module immediately or wait until a later time.

Resetting the system controller module propagates image updates to all nonsystem controller modules. Choosing to defer the reset until later allows the system to continue operating without a service interruption until a system controller module reset triggers completion of the upgrade.

Step 16 When the download completes, click Finish to complete this procedure, as shown in Figure 8-12.
