Provisioning Subscribers for a Digital Off-Hook Configuration

Provisioning Subscribers for a Digital Off-Hook Configuration

This chapter describes how to assign CAP ATU-C and LIM ports to a logical pool and associate subscribers to LIM ports. These tasks are the major provisioning tasks for a Digital Off-Hook (DOH) configuration.

This chapter includes the following sections:

Overview and Purpose

When you provision subscribers, you assign CAP ATU-C and LIM ports to subscribers and define each subscriber's initial level of service. Finally, you establish the virtual circuit and path that the subscriber's data is to follow, which is described in "Configuring ATM Virtual Channels for a Digital Off-Hook Configuration."

The port to which you associate a subscriber reflects the level of service that a subscriber selects in relation to the capabilities of the available telco equipment that a subscriber is using. As this relationship changes, you can maintain a consistent quality of service by subsequently adding or deleting subscribers' port associations.

Setting Subscriber Defaults in the subscriberdefaults.ini File

This section describes how to use the system file called subscriberdefaults.ini to set subscriber defaults. This file is part of your ViewRunner installation and retains any values that you set in a previous installation of ViewRunner 3.0.0. An example of the file is included at the end of this section. For more information about installing this file, see the ViewRunner for Windows Installation and Administration Guide.

To edit the default subscriber values, complete the following steps:

Step 1 Launch ViewRunner.

Step 2 From your Windows Start menu, choose Program > Accessories > Notepad.

Step 3 In Notepad, choose Open from the File menu.

Step 4 Find the Winnt folder on your hard drive, and then the subscriberdefaults.ini file.

Step 5 Double-click the subscriberdefaults.ini file to open it.

Step 6 Find the line that you want to modify; place your cursor on this line and type in the new value.

Step 7 Repeat Step 6 for all of the default values that you want to change.

Step 8 Save the file by choosing the Save from the File menu when you have finished modifying the values that you want to reset.

Step 9 Close Notepad.

ViewRunner reads the new values and displays them in the Subscriber Properties dialog box.

Note You must access the subscriberdefaults.ini file using Notepad every time you want to modify the provisioned values for a subscriber.

An example of a subscriberdefaults.ini file follows. Sections are separated by square brackets [ ].

Assigning CAP ATU-C and LIM Ports to a Logical Pool

In their initial state, discovered resources (LIM and CAP ATU-C ports) are in their respective unassigned windows. The list boxes that are located on the bottom third of the Physical Pool dialog box Logical Pool tab display unassigned LIM ports and CAP ATU-C module ports, respectively.

The LIM ports are in the left box, and the CAP ATU-C module ports are in the right box. Figure 3-1 shows the assignment of ports to logical pools.

Figure 3-1: Logical Pool Properties---Physical Pool A Logical Pool 1 Dialog Box

Complete the following steps to assign CAP ATU-C and LIM ports to a logical pool:

Step 1 Use the right mouse button to drag and drop a subscriber line or ATU-C port from the unassigned box to the corresponding assigned box.

Step 2 To choose more than one logical pool, follow these steps:

Note The Over Subscription Ratios field at the top of the dialog box changes dynamically, according to the number of LIM ports and CAP ATU-C module ports you drop into the top list boxes.

Each list box displays the port access identifier (AID). In addition, ViewRunner displays the Administrative state and Service state for each port and supporting module. In the case of LIM ports, ViewRunner also displays the associated subscriber's Administrative state.

Associating Subscribers to LIM Ports

You can add, modify, or delete a subscriber from the LIM Properties dialog box by completing the following steps:

Step 1 Place your cursor over the LIM and right-click to access the menu shown in Figure 3-2.

Figure 3-2: Module Menu

Step 2 Choose Port Properties and Configuration.

The LIM Module Properties dialog box Port Configuration tab opens (Figure 3-3).

Table 3-1 describes the fields on the LIM Properties dialog box.

Table 3-1: LIM Module Properties Dialog Box Fields
Field Description

Administrative State

Displays the status of the Administrative state, either Unlocked or Locked. Defaults to Locked. When you first insert a module into the chassis, it is locked.

Subscriber ID

Allows configuration of a unique subscriber identifier.

Circuit ID

Allows configuration of a unique identifier assigned to this copper local-loop circuit.

Physical Pool ID

Displays the physical pool to which this LIM port belongs.

Logical Pool ID

Displays the logical pool to which this LIM port belongs.

Edit Pool button

Allows you to edit the logical pool with which this LIM port is associated.

Add or Edit Subscriber button

Allows you to add or edit a subscriber to this LIM port. This button changes to Edit Subscriber if you are viewing a specific subscriber.

Using the Subscriber Properties Dialog Box

You can add a subscriber to a module on the Subscriber Properties dialog box, which you access through the LIM Module Properties dialog box by clicking Add Subscriber. The Subscriber Properties dialog box is shown in Figure 3-4.

The fields on the Subscriber Properties dialog box are described in Table 3-2.

Table 3-2: Subscriber Properties Dialog Box
Field Description

Administrative State

Displays the Administrative state of the subscriber, either Locked or Unlocked.

  • Click Locked to add, delete, or modify existing port or subscriber settings. A subscriber cannot receive transmission service when a module or port is unlocked.

  • An Unlocked state permits the module to provide service. You cannot add, modify, or delete a port or subscriber when a module or port is locked.

  • Click Unlocked after you have completed adding or modifying subscriber properties. An unlocked state permits the module to provide service. You cannot add, modify, or delete a port or subscriber when a module or port is unlocked.

  • If you change the Administrative state by clicking Locked, you must also click Apply for the change to take effect.

Subscriber ID

Required field that must contain 1 to 20 alphanumeric characters. ViewRunner does not guarantee the uniqueness of subscriber IDs.

ViewRunner does not allow you to modify subscriber configuration parameters unless you enter an alphanumeric character.

Note If you input more that 20 characters for the subscriber ID, the system beeps, beginning with the 21st character. This alert informs you that you have input too many characters.

Subscriber ID is a nonservice-affecting parameter for the Cisco 6100 Series system. You can modify the Subscriber ID field when the subscriber is locked.

Service Provisioning button

Click to open the Service Provisioning dialog box.(See the "Guidelines for Adding New VPI/VCI Addresses" section for more information on using this dialog box.)

Subscriber Association to Port

Displays the module AID and port number that are associated with this subscriber.

Circuit ID

Allows you to configure an identifier that is assigned to the local loop (the phone line that goes to the CPE1). Setting this field is optional. The Circuit ID depends on whether a port is a competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC) or an independent local exchange carrier (ILEC).

Max Allowed Rates: Downstream and Upstream

Limits the maximum trained rate of a subscriber's modem. Use the up and down arrows to choose valid settings, which are measured in kilobits per second. The downstream and upstream selections are independent. See the "Training Process" section for more information about line training.

Margin Configuration: Downstream and Upstream

Allows you to associate an upstream margin and a downstream margin value with a subscriber by using the down arrow to choose valid settings in decibels. See the "Bit Error Rate and Noise Margin" section for more information on setting the margin configuration.

Note Increasing the margins could prevent a line from training. A warning dialog box appears when you try to change the noise margin. The default margin configuration is 6 dB upstream and 3 dB downstream.

PSD2 Transmit Power

Allows you to specify downstream and upstream values in dBm/HZ for PSD transmit power. Transmit power is a measure of the downstream PSD mask. To avoid transmission errors, set the downstream channel to -40 dBm/Hz. Use the down arrows to choose from the available rates.

CPE Signature

Allows you to set the signature of the CPE unit. Use the up and down arrows to set this value.

Idle

Allows you to set the idle timeout value in minutes by using the up and down arrows and the PVC Idle Mark in cells per minute.

Session

Allows you to set the session timeout value in minutes by using the up and down arrows and the Lockout Time in minutes.

CAP Rates

Allows you to set the Downstream CAP baud rate. You can specify Reed Solomon coding in this field. Allows you to set the Upstream CAP rate, either Allow 17K Baud or Allow 68K Baud.

1CPE = customer premises equipment
2PSD = power spectral density

Note When you have completed setting subscriber properties, you are ready to set up the permanent virtual channels for the subscribers that you have provisioned. See "Configuring ATM Virtual Channels for a Digital Off-Hook Configuration," for these instructions.

Adding or Modifying a Subscriber

Complete the following steps to add or modify a subscriber:

Step 1 Click

Step 4 Verify that the fields in the Subscriber Association to Port group box for module AID, port number, and Circuit ID are correct.

Step 5 Set the Max Allowed Rates for Downstream and Upstream by using the up and down arrows.

The default settings are 7168 downstream and 1088 upstream. The following settings are valid:

Step 6 Set the Margin Configuration Downstream and Upstream values by using the down arrows.

The default settings are 3 dB downstream and 6 dB upstream. The following settings are valid:

Step 7 Set the PSD Transmit Power Downstream and Upstream values by using the down arrows.

The default settings are -40 dBm/Hz downstream and -38 dBm/Hz upstream. The following settings are valid:

Step 8 Set the CPE Signature by using the up and down arrows.

The default is 0, and the range is 0 to 127. This setting is a hardware identifier for the subscriber modem and is usually only used with older modems.

Step 9 Set the following timer settings as specified by a subscriber's account:

Idle timer:

Session timer:

Step 10 Set the Downstream fields in the CAP Rates group box as follows:

Step 11 Set the Upstream fields in the CAP Rates group box as follows:

Step 12 Click OK or Apply to save these settings.

Step 13 Repeat Step 3 through Step 12 for each subscriber that you want to add.

You can add subscribers only when a subscriber does not already exist for the port. This restriction prevents you from assigning more than one subscriber ID for each LIM port.
