This chapter describes how to set asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) virtual channels for a Direct Connect configuration.
This chapter includes the following sections:
To configure ATM channel mapping between the CPE and the ATM network through the Cisco 6100/6130, you need to configure the ATM virtual channels. This section includes some general guidelines to consider before you set up ATM virtual channels for your subscribers, illustrations and descriptions of the dialog boxes that you use for these tasks, and instructions for setting the virtual path identifier (VPI) and virtual channel identifier (VCI) addresses for your subscribers.
Service provisioning must adhere to a variety of configuration rules, which prevent errors when establishing ATM connections. ViewRunner for HP OpenView includes service provisioning logic to ensure valid combinations of configuration data.
Consider the following guidelines before you configure ATM virtual channels:

Subscriber ID | Displays the subscriber that is associated with the PVCs. This is a read-only field. | ||
Displays the VPIs and VCIs for current subscribers. To edit a subscriber VPI, click on the actual Subscriber ID in the Subscriber ID column to highlight the subscriber. Then use the down arrow in the Permanent Virtual Connection group box to change that subscriber's ID. To delete a subscriber ID in this scroll-down PVC connection list, highlight that subscriber ID and click Delete Now. | |||
Local Network VPI and Network VCI columns | Displays the network VPI and VCI for a specific subscriber. To edit a Network ID, click Subscriber ID to highlight it. Then use the down arrows in the Permanent Virtual Connection group box to change the subscriber's network ID. | ||
Subscriber VPI | Displays the Subscriber VPI, which is always 1. This field is read-only. | ||
Subscriber VCI | Click Add Now to create a new PVC for the subscriber and add it to the PVC connection list. Adding subscribers to the PVC connection list is subject to PVC configuration rules. | ||
Network VPI/VCI | When the subscriber is locked, you can add or delete the PVC VPI/VCI values. Click Add Now to create a new PVC for the subscriber and add it to the PVC connection list. Adding subscribers to the PVC connections list is subject to PVC configuration rules. (See the "Guidelines for Configuring ATM Virtual Channels" section.) | ||
Path Latency (STU-C Module Service Provisioning) | The default is set to Interleaved delay, the setting that Cisco recommends. This is not an option on STU-C or CAP ATU-C modules. DMT-2 modules default to Fast Interleaved. | ||
Queue Priority | Queue priority applies to dual-port CAP ATU-C and dual-port DMT-2 ATU-C modules. The Queue Priority can have one of the following values:

Note ViewRunner supports a virtual connection for quad-port STU-C modules that is consistent with that provided for CAP ATU-C modules. Except for the training rates, subscriber provisioning for the ATM virtual channel for quad-port STU-C modules is similar to that for the dual-port CAP ATU-C module. |
You add new VPI/VCI addresses on the Service Provisioning dialog box, which is described in the preceding section. The following sections include guidelines and steps for adding new VPI/VCI addresses.
The Permanent Virtual Connection group box on the Service Provisioning dialog box includes an area for setting Subscriber IDs and an area for setting Network IDs. Consider the following guidelines:
Complete the following steps to add new VPI/VCI addresses for subscribers. Refer to the field descriptions in Table 3-1.
Step 2 Click Service Provisioning on the Subscriber Properties dialog box.
The Service Provisioning dialog box opens (Figure 3-2).

Step 3 Use the down arrows in the VPI and VCI fields under Subscriber and Network to set the virtual path and virtual channel IDs for the subscriber.
The Subscriber VPI is always 1. The other identifiers that you select must be unused addresses.
Step 4 Click Add Now to add these identifiers.
Step 5 Repeat Step 3 through Step 4 for each subscriber VCI/VPI address that you want to add.
Step 6 Click Close when you are finished adding new addresses.
If you want to change the port entries and reuse an address for a new subscriber, you must first delete the subscriber that is assigned to that address. The system does not allow an identifier to be used for more than one subscriber. To delete subscriber PVCs, complete the following steps:
Step 2 Click Service Provisioning on the Subscriber Properties dialog box.
Step 3 Highlight the subscriber PVC that you want to delete from the Subscriber VPI/VCI column.
Step 4 Click Delete.
Step 5 Repeat Step 3 through Step 4 for each PVC that you want to delete.
Step 6 Click Close when you are finished deleting subscribers.
Consider the following guidelines before you modify subscribers' VPI and VCI addresses:
To view the VPI/VCI addresses, complete the following steps:
The Subscriber PVCs dialog box shown in Figure 3-3 opens.

This dialog box displays the following information for each subscriber:
Step 2 Click a hyperlink subscriber ID (blue, underlined text) to open a specific Subscriber Properties dialog box.
Step 3 Change the Administrative state to Locked as follows:
a. Click Locked next to Administrative state.
b. Click Apply.
c. Click Yes in the message box (if trained).
Step 4 Click Service Provisioning to open the Service Provisioning dialog box.
Step 5 View the VCI/VPI addresses, as described in the "Adding New VPI/VCI Addresses" section and in the "Deleting Subscriber PVCs" section, and then click Close.
This section provides more details for setting the Permanent Virtual Connection group box Latency field and Queue Priority field. Consider the following guidelines:
You can select priority queue and path latency on the Service Provisioning dialog box (see Figure 3-4). The fields on this dialog box are described previously in Table 3-1.

Complete the following steps to specify other subscriber PVC parameters:
Step 2 Verify that the Latency setting for the associated port is set to Interleaved, which is the default and recommended setting.
Step 3 Set the Queue Priority field to one of the following settings:

Note You can set several priority queues, but you must have unique PVCs. |
The default setting is Data.

Caution Passing standard data over Voice or Voice Signalling causes all transmissions except pings to fail. |
Step 4 Click Add.
As a precaution, you should always verify port and module settings after you have provisioned new subscribers or modified the settings for existing subscribers. The following chapter includes instructions for verifying the settings that you have provisioned for a subscriber.
