This chapter describes the subscriber provisioning process and includes illustrations and descriptions of the dialog boxes in which you provision service for subscribers, procedure guidelines, and step-by-step instructions to provision subscribers using a Direct Connect configuration. This chapter also includes information about configuring modules that provide special settings. This chapter is oriented from the viewpoint of the operator who is using the ViewRunner graphical user interface (GUI) to set up new subscribers or to change the settings for existing subscribers.
This chapter includes the following sections:
When you provision subscribers, you associate subscribers to ports and define each subscriber's initial level of service. Finally, you establish the virtual circuit and path that the subscriber's data is to follow, which is described in "Configuring ATM Virtual Channels for a Direct Connect Configuration."
You use the following ViewRunner dialog boxes to set up a subscriber:

Consider the guidelines that follow before you provision your subscribers. Following these guidelines can help you avoid making errors when you establish asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) connections.
The following guidelines apply to setting up subscriber and circuit IDs:

The following guidelines apply to setting training rates, margin errors, and the priority queue:
When you provision subscribers, you associate subscribers to ports, identify the port to which each subscriber is connected, and then you define subscribers by specifying the subscriber ID for each subscriber and, optionally, the circuit ID for each subscriber. Once you define a subscriber, you can add a new subscriber, delete a current subscriber, or modify the parameters of a current subscriber.
Complete the procedures in the sections that follow to associate subscribers to ports. These procedures are found in the following sections:

Note The Status and Configuration tabs on the dual-port DMT-2 ATU-C module and ports dialog boxes are similar to those of the dual-port CAP ATU-C module. For this reason, illustrations of and references to the CAP ATU-C module dialog boxes also refer to the dual-port DMT-2 ATU-C module dialog boxes. The Status and Configuration tabs of the Quad-port STU-C module dialog boxes are represented separately if they differ from those of the ATU-C module, in ways other than number of ports present. |
Complete the following steps to associate a subscriber to a port.

Note To access this chassis menu, right-click anywhere on the frame, or edge, of the chassis view on the GUI. You cannot access this menu by clicking on any of the modules within the chassis. |
The Port Service Configuration dialog box opens, shown in Figure 2-1. From this dialog box, you can view all of the available ports, and those that are in service or capable of service.

Find the name of the port that you want to view in the PORT AID column and click on its hyperlink (the blue, underlined text that names the port).
The Module Properties dialog box, shown in Figure 2-2, opens at the Port Configuration tab for the port that you have selected.

Table 2-1 describes the fields and buttons for this dialog box.

Administrative State | Displays the status of the Administrative state, either Unlocked or Locked. Defaults to Locked; in other words, when you first insert a module into the chassis, it is in a locked state. |
Inventory Details Firmware Version | Displays the current version of the module firmware. Use this field to make sure you are using the correct version. |
Displays the maximum upstream and downstream rates supported by the ATU-C module. The Line Coding indicates the modulation technique supported by the modem ports (CAP ATU-C, DMT ATU-C, or flexi ATU-C). Connect Mode shows the jumper setting of the module. | |
Subscriber ID | Displays the ID of the subscriber. The Subscriber ID allows you to configure a unique record identifier for a subscriber. |
When you choose a port, you can add a subscriber to this port or edit a subscriber's port configuration. The Add Subscriber button displays if you are adding a new subscriber; the Edit Subscriber button displays if you have already assigned a subscriber to this module. |
To set subscriber properties for service or change the settings for a current subscriber, you use the Subscriber Properties dialog box. You access this dialog box through the Module Properties dialog box, described in the preceding section. Figure 2-3 shows the Subscriber Properties dialog box for the CAP ATU-C module, and Figure 2-4 shows the Subscriber Properties dialog box for the STU-C module.
This section includes general descriptions of the fields and buttons that you use to provision service for a subscriber, and gives instructions for setting up a subscriber. See "Setting Subscriber Properties" section for instructions that are specific to setting subscriber properties for a DMT-2 ATU-C module.


Table 2-2 describes the fields in the Subscriber Properties dialog box.

Administrative State | Displays the Administrative state of the subscriber. Can be Locked or Unlocked.

Subscriber ID | The Subscriber ID field is required and must contain 1 to 20 alphanumeric characters. ViewRunner cannot guarantee the number is unique. ViewRunner recognizes and displays the subscribers that are created with null subscriber IDs. ViewRunner does not allow modification of subscriber configuration parameters unless you enter an alphanumeric character.

Displays the module and port that are associated with this subscriber. | |||
Circuit ID | Allows you to configure an identifier that is assigned to the local loop (the phone line that goes to the CPE1). Setting this field is optional. The Circuit ID depends on whether a port is a competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC) or an independent local exchange carrier (ILEC). | ||

Max Allowed Downstream/Upstream Rates | Limits the maximum trained rate of a subscriber's modem. Use the down arrow to select the valid configuration settings, which are measured in kilobits per second. You can also type in a value that ViewRunner adjusts to the closest available rate. | ||
Margin Configuration (Downstream and Upstream) | Allows you to associate downstream and upstream margin values with a subscriber. Use the down arrows to scroll to the value you want to set for Downstream and Upstream. See the "Guidelines for Setting Training Rates, Margin Errors, and Priority Queue" section for more information on setting the margins.

Power spectral density (PSD) sets downstream transmit power in dBm/Hz per subscriber. Verify that the PSD complies with the service provider standards or as specified on the related service order for the subscriber you are provisioning. The following PSD downstream ranges are valid:
This setting is not available for DMT-2 ATU-C or quad-port STU-C modules. | |||
Allow 136K Baud | Standard kilobaud settings include:
ViewRunner ensures that at least one of these baud rates is enabled. | ||
CPE Signature | Use the up/down arrows to set this value. This value reflects the type of the CPE that is connected to the Cisco 6100/6130. Use the service provider standard setting or choose 0 for the Cisco default. | ||

While the Module Properties dialog box is open and after you have completed the steps in the "Associating Subscribers to Ports" section, complete the following steps to set up a subscriber.
The Subscriber Properties dialog box opens. The port locks automatically.

Note You can click Apply at any time after you enter data into a field. Doing this saves the change, but keeps the dialog box open. |
Step 2 Enter the appropriate data into the following fields, and then click Apply for the settings to take effect.
a. Subscriber ID
b. Click Apply
c. Click the Service Provisioning button and input your PVC information
d. Circuit ID (See a discussion of circuit ID in the "Guidelines for Provisioning Subscribers" section.) This setting is optional.
Step 3 Choose the value for the Maximum Allowed Downstream and Upstream Rates by using the down arrow to choose a value.
These rates are assigned by the service provider based on the subscriber's service order. The default rates are 7168 Downstream and 1088 Upstream for CAP ATU-C and flexi ATU-C modules. The default line rate for an STU-C module is 1168 upstream and downstream.

Note If you are provisioning subscribers to STU-C modules, click Apply and you are finished with this procedure. Click OK to close the dialog box. STU-C modules automatically default the values on the steps that follow. |

Step 4 Choose the Downstream and Upstream values for Margin Configuration by using the down arrow.
These values are assigned by the service provider based on the subscriber's service order. The default values are 6 dB upstream and 3 dB downstream.
Step 5 Choose PSD Transmit Power for Downstream and Upstream by using the down arrow in these fields.
The default values for this field are -40 dBm/Hz Downstream and -38 dBm/Hz Upstream.
Step 6 Enable or disable the CPE Signature feature; set the signature within a 0 to 127 range.
This setting is mostly used for older modems for the purposes of hardware identification.
Step 7 Enable or disable the 136 kilobaud feature by selecting Allow 136K Baud in the CAP Rates Downstream group box.
If you select Allow 136K Baud, you can then choose from the following Reed-Solomon settings:
Step 8 Select Allow 17K Baud or Allow 68 K Baud in the CAP Rates Upstream group box.

Note To use the 16 kilobaud and 17 kilobaud rate you must also upgrade the CPE. |
The default for each of these selections is deselected, or disabled.
Step 9 Click OK or Apply to save the settings (clicking OK saves changes and closes the dialog box; clicking Apply saves the changes and leaves the dialog box open.)

To modify subscriber data, complete the following steps:

Note The Subscriber ID field can be edited regardless of the Administrative state setting. However, the subscriber Administrative state must be set to Locked before modifying other parameters. Those parameters actually change during the transition of the Administrative state from Locked to Unlocked. |
Step 2 Change the Max Allowed Rates Downstream and Upstream fields by selecting values from the list boxes.
Step 3 Change the Margin Configuration Downstream and Upstream fields by selecting values from the list boxes.
Step 4 Check Allow 136K Baud training rates or disallow by leaving the check box blank.
Step 5 Enable or disable CPE Signature detection.
Step 6 Change the Administrative State to Unlocked.
Step 7 Click OK or Apply for the changes to take effect.
To delete a subscriber, complete the following steps:

Step 2 The Subscriber ID field is automatically entered.
Step 3 Click Lock (a ViewRunner Confirmation window appears as shown in Figure 2-6).

Step 4 Click OK.
Step 5 Click Delete.

Note The Delete button is dimmed unless the subscriber is locked. If the subscriber's Administrative state has been changed to Locked since you opened the dialog box and you have not yet applied a configuration, selecting Delete causes the Lock Confirmation dialog box to open. |
Step 6 Click OK or Apply.
To set specific subscriber properties that are available for configurations that are using discrete multi-tone (DMT) transmission, use the DMT-2 Parameters group box on the Subscriber Properties dialog box, shown in Figure 2-7. This section includes a description of the fields and instructions for setting these fields.

These settings include overhead framing, trellis coding, bit swapping, training mode, interleaved delay, and forward error correction (FEC) redundancy bytes.

Complete the following steps to set the fields in the Subscriber Properties dialog box:
Step 2 Choose Port Properties and Configuration to open the Subscriber Properties dialog box for a DMT-2 ATU-C module.
The Subscriber Properties dialog box opens, shown in Figure 2-7. In the More Parameters dialog box, set the following parameters as specified by the customer account:
Step 3 Use the down arrow to choose one of the following values in the Overhead Frame field:
a. Reduced, Merged
b. Reduced, Separate
c. Full, Sync
d. Full, Async
The default is Reduced Merged.
Step 4 Select Trellis Code to enable trellis coding.
The default is deselected, or disabled.
Step 5 Use the down arrow in the Training Mode field to choose either Fast or Standard training mode.
The default is Standard.

Note The error message "Reference Source Not Found" displays if a modem is incompatible with the training mode that you have set. |
Step 6 Select Bit Swapping to enable this feature.
The default setting is disabled.
Step 7 Use the down arrow to choose a value in the Interleaved Delay field.
The default setting is 64,000.
Step 8 Use the down arrow to choose a value in the FEC Redundancy Bytes field.
The default FEC value is 16.
Step 9 Click OK for these settings to take effect and close the dialog box, or click Apply to save the settings and keep the dialog box open.
The dual-port DMT-2 ATU-C module performance displays on the DMT-2 Status dialog box (Figure 2-8) as two column headers, parameter and value. The Parameter column specifies the type of performance counter. The Value column contains the value of the counter.
To view the most recent performance counter values, open the DMT-2 Status dialog box using the following steps:
Step 2 Choose Port tab and the Status tab.
Step 3 Click More Parameters in the lower left corner of the dialog box.
The DMT-2 Status dialog box opens, shown in Figure 2-8. This dialog box displays a list of all performance counters and their values, as well as Attenuation and SNR Margin values.
